Charleston Air Force Base (AFB) Housing and Information:
Location: JB Charleston (AB) is located about 10 miles from downtown Charleston in North Charleston, Charleston County. The Naval Weapons Station (WS) is about 10 miles from the AB in Goose Creek, Berkeley County.
Both are located in the heart of the Lowcountry, the portion of historic South Carolina where pine and oak forests meet with the natural beauty of Intercoastal Waterway marshes and gorgeous barrier island beaches. With a rich military history and a moderate cost of living, the area has attracted many military retirees that now call the Lowcountry home.

Area Population: Over 698,000 in the tri-county area. The state of South Carolina has seen a 5.85% increase in overall population since 2010. The tri-county area is one of the fastes growing in the state, with an average of 48 additional residents daily.
Schools:For information on local schools, please see the Education section of this document. Parents of school age children are encouraged to do their research regarding schools and education in the tri-county area. According to South Carolina state law, the county in which you live determines what public schools your child(ren) will attend. Children of military members attend schools in the surrounding Charleston, Dorchester II and 4, and Berkeley County School Districts. The following are the local school districts:
Housing: The Air Base has a total of 562 family housing units, located in two areas. Both are gated. The Weapons Station has a total of 1,017 family housing units located in two neighborhoods, MenRiv Park and Eastside. MenRiv Park is located in a non-gated section of the Weapons Station. Waiting times for base housing change on a weekly basis.
Local community housing is available. Rentals are moderate to high. The Housing Office can help with local housing options.
