Westview Middle School

I am deeply concerned about the recent direction Westview Middle School is taking under its current leadership. There appears to be an overwhelming focus on boosting standardized test scores at the expense of meeting the individual needs and goals of students.

Recently, students, including my own, have had their schedules changed without parent consent during the final nine weeks of school. My child, who is a straight A honors student, was removed from a class he was excelling in and that was directly connected to his goal of qualifying for a high school credit course next year. Instead, he was placed into a study lab focused on test preparation.

What is most troubling is how this was handled. Parents were only sent an opt out form with no clear deadline, no explanation of the consequences of not opting out, and no transparency about how significantly schedules would be altered. This feels misleading and dismissive of both students’ academic progress and parents’ involvement.

Decisions like this suggest that the school is prioritizing test performance metrics over student achievement, growth, and long term opportunities. Strong students who are already succeeding should not have their academic paths disrupted for the sake of improving school wide data.

I believe in supporting schools and educators, but families deserve transparency, respect, and a commitment to each child’s individual success, not decisions that feel rushed, unclear, and driven by numbers rather than students.

The school has done a tremendous job addressing this issue with the students. The challenge, unfortunately, is getting parents to address this behavior and its origin in the home.

The use of Chromebooks gives student and parents opportunity to manage and complete homework assignments throughout the week and weekends. Homework is sufficent to reinforce the classroom lesson without being overly burdensome.

The "TEAM" approach to the students "block" allows for unprecedented collaboration that includes teachers and parents and student. It reduces instances where "personality" influences perception. It is one of the most postive environments I have seen.

Student character is a monthly focus. I would like to see more done to promote core characteristics such as patriotism and commitment.

The Principal is very active and present while also deligating authority down to the teachers. The teachers and students are the focus and the ones empowered to be successful.

Having a child on an IEP, this school has done an extraordinary job in continuously improving performance areas to the point that my student could come off the IEP.

We moved into this schools zone solely for the purpose of allowing our children to attend Westview Elementary and Westview Middle. They are by far the top schools in Berkeley County SC.

I transferred my 6th grade child from a private school to WMS in the middle of the year. My child had been in this private area school since she was 4 years old. My child was not doing well in this 6th grade private school and was having issues of being bullied. The private school said the issue was my child and they could not help. I moved her to WMS. WMS tested her and found she was a normal, average child. The staff at Westview are able to TEACH all kids, not just honor students, but average and special needs children. ALL of the staff at WMS have gone above and beyond my expectations. The WMS staff has helped my child to acclimate to the school. The staff is tutoring her in ELA & SS where she needs extra help, and praises her for her math. My child has been able to pull her failing grades from this other school to end this year with a B average. My child feels confident to speak with the staff if she has a problem. My child loves her new school. I am so relieved that my child is now in a caring and capable environment where she can grow and succeed for the future that is ahead of her. I just wish I had chosen WMS at the beginning of the year.

this is our first year in middle school with my oldest who is in 6th grade. I have to say that so far we have had a really good year. the 6th grade teachers are awesome. They teach in a way that helps my child really grasp what is being taught! The administration is always helpful and communication between parents and staff is getting better as school continues. My only complaint is with the front office staff. They are not always so friendly or eager to help. But overall I give Westview middle 2 thumbs up!
