My oldest child started Memminger in CD-4 and will be graduating from this wonderful school this month. My youngest also started in pre-k, but moved to Buist for 3rd grade--which is not a move I would've opted for except we preferred Buist to our in-district middle school.

All that to say, with Memminger becoming a Buist feeder school, the school demographics have shifted dramatically in this time--not necessarily for the better of the community and public, if you ask me, but I digress. What has been the same since we started, is the absolutely amazing, warm, inclusive culture at Memminger--thanks to truly amazing teachers, staff and administrators. This is a place where teachers seem happy and engaged, and everyone knows your child's name, whether they've had them in class or not. Dottie Brown was an amazing principle, and Cheryl Wash has been an exceptional vice and interim principal (who every bit deserved the full-time role, as I'm sure the vast majority of parents and educators would agree, but again, I digress).

What you see on scorecards never gives a full picture. If I had used them to guide my decision about where to send my children, rather than my intuition, after visiting the school and getting to know the amazing educators and atmosphere (special shout out to Ms. Inabinet)I may not have sent my children to this wonderful gem of a school. My children both tested as gifted and have high 90th percentiles in iReady thanks in no small part to the excellent education provided by this school and the very dedicated educators. As a parent, I will miss this place tremendously--and I imagine the same is true of my kids.

Horrible support from admins, students cursing out teachers on field day and then getting full ride privileges after being removed from a classroom setting. Staff blames anyone who’s an easy scapegoat for their own internal problems. Sad to see how many kids are confused on who their next teacher is supposed to be.

This is my child's 2nd year at Memminger (coming from a Montessori pre-school) and we love it. The faculty and staff have been very helpful and communicative. Each of the teachers our child has had all seemed to be very involved and invested in our child's learning. We've been given suggestions for at home learning aides to help keep our child engaged and challenged. The culture at the school seems very welcoming and encouraging. We like that our child gets to take walking field trips to different things in the downtown area. We've had nothing but great experiences so far!

I have two children at Memminger, one in kindergarten and one in second grade. Both have attended since CD (aka pre-k4). I have nothing but positive things to say about their teachers, the staff, and our experience there. Both of my children are happy when they get home from school, enjoy learning, and are testing well above the national average on math and reading. Not just their teachers, but the entire faculty and staff know my kids by name and welcome them with smiles and enthusiasm every morning. Because the school is downtown, they get to go on frequent walking field trips to interesting places and performances, and often incorporate College of Charleston education students into special programs and events. We are so happy we chose Memminger and would encourage parents who are interested to look beyond the scores here.

Ths used to be a great school with a wonderful sense of community and pride. Under Principal Dixon's leadership the school was a wonderful place to work. It is beyond sad that over the past 2 years, it has been run into the ground through poor leadership, a culture of gossip and cruelty, and an overall lack of positive moral which begins at the top down. Beyond sad to see how much an ineffective leader can hurt a school.

I retired this year and started tutoring a 6th grader from Memminger Elementary school. It has been a wonderful experience for me, working with his teacher, mother and fellow volunteer who asked me to help. The teachers have high expectations for the children and the children are so polite and full of energy. It is both a challenge and a delight to spend time with them.

Dedicated teachers and support staff. Hands on principal who really cares about the students. Students are creative, open to new ideas, eager to learn and very proud of their school.

Have been volunteering @ Memminger for over 5 yrs. Enjoy the spirit of the kids, the dedication of the teachers/administration. Have seen progress being made and the positive re-enforcement in the kids as they make that progress.

I have volunteered at Memminger in the past and have been very impressed with the teachers and administration. The children are very creative and a joy to be around.
