We absolutely love Oakland! We have been lucky enough to start from the CD program with our daughter, who is now entering 3rd grade. And our son started in 1st grade, and will now be entering 5th grade. The teachers are fabulous and provide quality education in a safe and fun environment. Our kids continue to excel acedemically and socially. The school now sponsors a tennis team and archery team. The PTO continues to organize wonderful events and support the school as a whole. We have been nothing but pleased!

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the teachers and staff at Oakland when we began the CD program several years ago. Every teacher we have had has exceeded our expectations. My child feels cared for and loves going to school each day.

My child has attended Oakland from CD/pre-K) Covid hit and Oakland continued to pull through and strong from every angle for our babies. I would parallel Oakland right next to a private or charter school and also enjoy time spent with my daughter’s classmates from field trips to PTO.

Great neighborhood school! I wish people in West Ashley would stop glamorizing these CCSD "choice" schools (honestly, just because a school is part of a choice lottery doesn't mean it's higher quality --some are, most aren't) and get back to the zoned schools. It'd be so nice if children of the same neighborhood all went to school together instead of spread over 5+ schools in the West Ashley area -- especially when you have a zoned school like Oakland! Oakland has built its own little community even given the somewhat vast area that this school is zoned. Definitely not a school to be overlooked in the kindergarten consideration process. The PTO has really stepped up in recent years and there are so many more activities involving the entire family. Also, has an outstanding CD program!

We love Oakland! Our son has excelled each year with his academics at this school. The staff/teachers truly care about the kids. They make sure that your child is prepared for their next grade next grade level. We are so grateful for this school, and we can’t wait four our younger kids to attend. Go Orcas!

Oakland has been a blessing for our family. We are finishing up our 4th year and each year has been better and better. Our child is engaged, happy, and excited to go to school each day. The administration, teachers, and staff truly love each and every child.

We have been at Oakland since kindergarten and are thrilled with everything about this school! The teachers love their jobs and are passionate about teaching these children. The administrators love the school, the teachers and the students and everyone works so hard to see Oakland excel! We passed up an opening at one of the local lottery based schools within CCSD so that we could stay at Oakland and don’t regret our decision at all.

I have 2 kids at Oakland, and we have had an amazing experience for both of them. We are currently finishing our 4th year at the school and have had nothing but amazing teachers. The admin and staff are incredible and have created such a personalized, fun environment for our kids to learn in. Every year they’ve expanded and added even more opportunities (things like tennis & archery teams, and fun incentives and family events throughout the year). Having volunteered throughout the school, I’ve had the opportunity to see “behind the scenes” and am always so impressed by how much these teachers care and go above and beyond for their students. Don’t sleep on this hidden gem of a school!

Horrible school, from Principal to teachers! They treat children like a prisoners. They put unrealistic and unreasonable expectations on 4 year olds, and punish them in the weird and unreasonable ways. They make 4 year olds walk in the hallways with one hand on the lips and another hand on the waist, like prisoners. I pulled my child out of that horrendous school. There are maybe 3 good teachers who care for the whole school. Most of the teachers are there for a paycheck and don't care even to teach kids on their grade level.

Wide spread bullying. One teacher bullied a child during his Graduation ceremony. While on the podium, the Lead Teacher of Oakland Elementary school mispronounced one student’s name. Instead of acting appropriately in such situation she decided to give that student a loud shout out in a comical way. Then she immediately comically shouted out another student’s name who wasn’t even on her list. These are her words one to one from the video: “I do have to say J** B**…, there he is. That poor child! Every day he comes in the hall I say his name like that, Mmm… He loves it though, I think. I do! Ha, ha!” This should be considered bullying! Not only has the teacher used the Graduation to tease the child one last time, she admitted to doing that on a consistent basis through the school year. She even had a classical Bully’s excuse: ‘He loves it though, I think. I do! Ha, ha!’ We will never believe that the Principal of Oakland didn’t know about this bullying. The teachers in Oakland Elementary cannot say their student’s names after a year of teaching them. How can such teachers engage with the students? How are the teachers referring to their students during the school year, or do they just ignore them the whole year? Charleston County School Board member pulled her child out from that school. Even the Constituent board members don't take their children to Oakland. These facts tell you about this school louder than any good reviews here.

Oakland is one of the best schools in Charleston. Everyone from the administration to the teachers are outstanding in every way. They truly care and do their best every single day for every single student in the school.

Horrendous school! The principal is complicit with doing nothing to support the children. Regarding bullying she does nothing. Teachers do nothing. How far does it have to go before the school does something? It should not be far. The teachers lack in every possible aspect in terms of teaching. I do not know where the teacher came from, but there are maybe 2 good teachers in the school. Guidance counselor does not address bullies either. God forbid your child has a disability of any kind. Don’t go to this school.

Completely disappointed and appalled at the new principal and front desk staff. My son is African American and special needs.. since his arrival this year I have had nothing but problems with the bus situation and dealing with the racism and attitude from the secretary and front desk people. This school has no toleration for children who are minority or special needs. It is a shame children are still marginalized and disregarded by white middle class staff at this school.

I have never had so much confusion and trouble transferring my grandchildren school started on the 15th of August. My 2 boys didn't get to start until a month later. There is no school work being sent home of what their doing or done nothing I wrote in one of the boys weekly book asking on the 16th of how many children in their class as I will send snacks. I finally got a response on the 29th which they say they responded on the 28th that's a lie. I look everyday in the book waiting on a response. And then to top it off. No bus today. I call the school they say oh bus trouble call Durham bus lines well that's a joke. I'm still waiting on them to return my call from last week on the 21st from an incident that happen on the bus. So I'm not a happy person and that's why only 1 star if it was my choice a 0 star
Thanks

We have been involved with this school for 3 years. My kids have excelled at this school because of the amazing teachers and administrators. This school has helped my kids fall in love with learning and be the best students they can be. Every teacher, assistant, or staff that I have come in contact with has been very kind and helpful. Our family is moving and I am really going to miss this amazing school!

I like the teachers and princial at Oakland. However, this year the teachers seem to get carried away with the point system and forget that these are JUST kids. As an adult, I forget things all the time. My daughter forgot her fork. She then ate her lunch with her hands because they would take away her points. Also, the after school program was great at first but then the teacher had no tolerance for questions. It became a child care center instead of homework help center. Im glad this year is almost over.
