I was a Rollings Visual Arts student a LONG time ago. I tried out back in 3rd grade for 4th grade and got accepted. They took 4th grade away when I was supposed to start so I started in 1999 for 5th grade and went through 2003.

The school was the COOLEST school ever. As if elementary couldn’t have gotten any better, I got to start my first year at Rollings still somewhere between both amazing worlds of elementary and middle school (they didn’t add the “Middle” til the next year).

The teachers were the BEST, the number of times we got to walk out of class to support and enjoy student performances, be in one, or just go have fun at the Azalea Festival!!!

I got to learn art, and my last year there my painting was put into the Gibbes Museum of Art (2003).

Millennium Rollings was so much fun and I couldn’t have asked for more.

School spirit is wonderful among students & staff! My child wishes there were lockers so badly due to amount of things for each class & never wants to be absent for fear of falling behind. One teacher sends weekly updates on agenda. PTA is awesome & volunteers go the extra mile to make events memorable for everyone. My child says it would be nice if more teachers cared but still has most favorites & those teachers help make school & learning fun. Every school will have its pros and cons. There are areas for improvement but overall it’s a nice environment.

The teachers and administrators at this school are biased and do not care about their students. They do not respond to emails and communicate poorly. They only care about keeping their reputation, not about helping their students learn.

My son has a diagnosis and the teachers didn't act like they believed it. They didn't seem to understand his lack of organization. He was often late for class because he was trying to make up missed work. It would have been nice if they had shown some compassion instead of hitting him with detentions.

This school was not a good fit for my child. There are no lockers, the building is old with narrow hallways and not accessible. Many of the teachers push hard for results and their rigid approach takes the fun out of learning.

My son couldn't imagine going to another middle school. The teachers are creative and engaging. The students share a sense of camaraderie, commitment and pride because, overall, they have chosen to be there.

My daughter loves Rollings! She loves her vocal core and is working hard to get good grades. The teachers are amazing. They really love what they do and the students they work with. It really makes a difference when the teacher wants to be there. Middle school has been such and easy transition from elementary school for her.

I attended Rollings from 2002-2005 and despite basic middle school drama (cliques, bullying, etc.), I loved it. My core was Creative Writing (back when it was still a core!), but the teachers always encouraged us to explore all areas of the arts. Because of this school, I have breezed through writing all of my papers in high school and college, I have had several pieces published, I have cultivated a love for dance, and I am a professional actress. I would say my experience is unique, but my friends who attended here (many of whom I am still friends with!) have had professional success in what were their core areas--some are journalists, some are professional artists, and some are teachers. I now attend the University of South Carolina and STILL spot people wearing Rollings t-shirts around campus every now and then--that's always a conversation starter! Attending Rollings gives people a permanent bond because it is such a unique experience. I would not have traded it for anything. Do whatever you can to get your child into this school, because it will literally change the course of their life.

I was a student at Rollings Middle School about 8 years ago in the Theatre Arts program. I remember hearing horror stories about middle school and being so worried about what was in store for me. All i have to say is thank god I was accepted and went to Rollings for my three years of middle school because all those worries were immediately washed away. I'm currently in my 20's and can say that my three years at Rollings are still the best years of my life. I made my best friends there who have stayed by my side up to this point in my college life.. Going to a school that encouraged free thinking, open mindedness, and creativity has been the best thing for my future. Rollings student's are the kids out in the world today making great grades at distinguishable universities in rigorous majors. If you're a parent with a child in a Dorchester District 2 elementary school it would be in your best interest to do everything in your power to ensure your child attends Rollings Middle School of the Arts assuming you're worried about their future. It's an eight hour investment now that will more than likely pay off eight fold in the future not to mention they're bound to love every minute

My son is finishing his first year there, we live this school. To the parent who wrote they hate this school because of a locker, really you need to grow up. A locker, is the reason you hate something you need to really need to see what the school is about because it's clear you don't. A locker, really, get a life.
