I normally wouldnt leave a review for a school, but this experience has been extremely disappointing and matches what I had heard beforehand. Communication is very poor. Emails to the principal, assistant principal, counselors, and teachers often go unanswered, and phone calls are not returned.
There are also ongoing issues with grading. Assignments are not consistently entered, and grades are sometimes posted and later removed without explanation, which makes it difficult to track progress and support my child.
Academically, my sons MAP scores have declined since enrolling here, whereas they steadily improved at his previous school in Summerville. There are also frequent fights and behavioral issues, which do not create a positive learning environment.

This school is horrible with communication! Not only with parents but within each other!!!
Thats just the start!
My child went to a school supervisor for help trusting they could not only receive the help for herself but for another student this certain situation was affecting! Upon doing so the school tried punishing my daughter. She did the morally and ethically right thing and got punished! Very harshly! Something that had my child not stepped up and asked for help would have progressively gotten worse minute by minute!!! Your childrens safety is not rightfully fully provided! As for social and emotional support dont get me started. My child was seeking just that!!! For not only herself but another child affected and was punished very harshly!!! As for learning every request Ive made to help my daughters education from declining has been denied. Its their way or no way!!!

My child went to this school and she has told me some very harsh experiences. The students were very rude to her for no reason, and same with the teachers. I have also heard there are a lot of fights that happen here for things that are unnecessary which makes me assume my daughter shouldnt be influenced by those other students behavior. She has also told me that she was having trouble with things in one of her classes, which made her very anxious to go since of her being disliked by the other students and that certain teacher she was talking about. I personally believe that some teachers here should learn how to be respectful to their students and provide a safer environment that makes my daughter feel welcomed and not feel negative in any form of way.

This is my son's first year in middle school. He was bullied and the school effectively handled the issue.

Very pleasant experience. We moved from a different city and state where my son had a lot of problems with teachers and the staff was unfriendly. We had no issues with anyone here and his grades were even up. It was also easier getting him to go in the mornings.

This school is the worst in communication. They never update their school websites and no one in the office seems bothered.

I voted for the tax increase for DD2 schools for improvements that would be made to schools needing updated facilitys. Alston is long overdue for improvements to its facilities. One that should be a serious concern being the unlocked doors for anyone to enter during school hours having access to the hallways. To my knowledge the doors at the back of the school are the concern. After discussing my concertn with the principal, he explained there was nothing he could do to lock doors.

We are Military and move a lot. My son has only attended one year here and that is the eight grade. I can't say one bad thing for this school. My son left a highly rated school and did not do so good, but he came here and the atmosphere excelled his grades and his confidence.I am leaving Summerville with great thanks to all the teachers and staff at Alston. This is a Great School!
