From conversations with both a teacher and a student that attends, the School of Excellence part in the name itself is for show.

From the teacher there is a lack of support from administrators and apparently, you do not have to be certified (having passed the praxis) to now be responsible for students. Imagine having been a server and now, also without much support, Im now TEACHING. Comical.

Ive also heard (may or may not be true) that an entire grade-level of teachers left? Was it due to the lack of support, inexperience of higher management or what?

From a students perspective, one of their teachers that they enjoy so much shared with me that the admins are rude and when there is chaos going on they are no where to be found and it leaves the teachers frustrated and you can tell that they are stressed.

Im not sure who should be held most accountable for the jungle like environment, the nitpicking of teachers who are trying to make it, daily but if its the principle he/she needs to be evaluated. Expeditiously.

If I could give zero stars, I would. This school feels more like a prison from the gate to the way they treat both children and parents. The drop-off and pick-up process is dangerous, as they simply release the kids to wander and look for their parents on their own, with little to no staff supervision. Few staff members actually help the younger children.

The reception already sets the tone: constantly unfriendly staff, a principal who always has a stern face, and a nurse who is extremely rude. If your child has any special needs speech difficulties, hyperactivity, ADHD, or autism dont expect understanding or training from the teacher. Unless your child is perfect in their eyes, they will be excluded.

I even had the unfortunate experience of a substitute teacher scratching my daughters neck something completely unacceptable.

The only positive thing I can mention is the coordinator, Ms. Williams, who is by far the best person in that school.

This school is terrible. I do not recommend sending your children to Mivers School.

Stay away. Militant and (probably) prison-like. (Havent been to prison, but thats how my child described it.) Highest teacher turnover rate Ive ever seen. Its mind-blowing -until you get to know how the principal is: disrespectful and toxic. How about the other admin who screams at kids to sit down and shut their mouths. Whole- class punishment, they allow teachers to withhold recess for an entire class! Kindergartners! Can you imagine lets take away free playtime from kids, force them to be silent, then see how they do on the tests. lol thats what they care about, the scores. Not about making positive connections with kids or creating a fun, nurturing learning environment. Besides recess, the teachers cant even take kids outside unless they have permission in advance! This place is a sad, sad joke of a school. Ive heard that the teachers schedules change at the drop of a dime, also that they dont pay for enough substitutes, so classes need to be split up and crowd into other classrooms. Lack of communication, lack of positivity, and boring assemblies (with a few exceptions). Thankfully there are some amazing teachers there, and the SPED department seems to be amazing as well. Front desk ladies are great, as is the nurse.

This is a great school if you think it is good for your child to be bullied by students who suffer no consequences or if you prefer, they can be the bully and suffer no consequences. Maybe you are looking for a school where your child can ignore the academics and play on electronics for the whole day - this is it! If you are a teacher looking for the chance to be treated with disrespect and disdain by both students and administration - boy, have you found your home! Look at the teacher turnover rate - especially in the upper grades - to get a picture of how unpleasant and unprofessional this school is.

Mevers School of Excellence is, put simply NOT excellent. Teacher support from the administration is non-existent, the curriculum is horrible when there even is one, and people seem more concerned with looking good in front of the state than about their students. Teachers are fired or resign frequently, there is no stability. In fact, the rates of teacher certification show exactly what you need to know. There is such a small percentage of teachers that are actually certified to do their job, and they tend to FIRE THEM. Our (9th grade) English teacher was recently fired due to the fact that he taught us without using the workbook assigned (which, mind you, was not a 9th grade workbook). In my experience in the Middle School program at Mevers, I have learned more about English with that teacher in two months than with the workbook-using teachers in two years. Nothing at this school seems up to code; not the teachers, not the admins, not even the building itself. The doors on the bathroom stalls do not work, but the administration team seems to favor passing children who can't read to the next grade than fixing this simple issue. I am writing this review because I fear that the principal and team will not take my concerns into account as a student. They certainly haven't before. I would not recommend this school to anyone looking for staff who care and teachers who know what they're doing.

In my child's experience at mevers it is not a good school. The main problem is the Admin team they are extremely uncommunicative and tend to neglect the students needs and opinion my kid asked a administrator polietly to explain why they had a specific punishment in place. The administrator replied, "Because I said so." I believe this was a disrespectful response when my child was a simple questyion in regards to a punishment the grade level was given. In addition, students at this school are given little to no break time. I would not reccomend this school to anylone looking for a heathly school enviroment with supportive administrators. 1/5

My kids are returning to Mevers after completing their first year of attendance last school year. The experience has been wonderful so far. The administration and teachers and staff are all great at their jobs and really care about the students. Parents have to put in a required number of volunteer hours every year, but that time is important. Looking forward to another great year .

This school is absolutely terrible the teacher are not certified, thy dont care about their students, and the kids are EXTREMLY disrepectful. They also act grown and teachers are horrible and pay know attention to the students along with the fact they don't k ow how to do whaqt they teach and they don't care about the students they only care about the pay check that comes with the job.

This charter is owned by Charter Schools USA Berkeley Prep and it is obvious they are a for profit entity as salaries are far below even the lowest paying county in South Carolina, teachers have to earn any paid time off as well as benefits. (Ie: you are not eligible to receive any until after 60 days of employment),and teachers are forced to buy the schools uniform which must be worn daily like Chik-Fil-A.
The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing here. There is very little effective communication and an administration too focused on furthering their own careers than what is best for students. Since 9/2023 more than 15 staff members have resigned.....
In terms of pedagogy and curriculum.....there really is not any. Due to the lack of curriculum most teacher are only able to address one learning style.
Students are being unenrolled at a record pace.

Had one student here in the fall of 2021-2022, and then brought all 3 of my kids in 2022-2023 school year and I would not recommend. Most teachers do not have the criteria required to be "certified". It shows in the way that they teach. The turnover for teachers is quite high. My 3rd grader had multiple teachers just this year. Teachers were fired for the way they handled students, although I was not able to confirm this story 100%. Their "zero tolerance" for bullying and violence is a joke. There was an incident between my 6th grader and other kids in her class, that she informed me of, but I never heard from the school. When I reached out to the teacher, the only response I got was that it was referred to administration and that was it. No one ever called me back. I understand the need for an active shooter drill, but evidently to drive home the point of needing to be silent during the drill, they showed them a video of the Columbine High School massacre and showed them "what would happen if they weren't quiet". I could go on and on, but they will most definitely NOT be going back, and I highly recommend you don't send your kids as well.

This is our first year at Mevers. We decided to switch our kids to Mevers from traditional public school and were impressed with our initial tour. They really emphasized their zero tolerance behavior policy and how they have a higher level of learning at Mevers. Sadly we were misled. They do absolutely nothing about behavioral issues and the administration team severely lacks in properly supporting their teachers. Students are sent to admin and sent right back to class with no consequences, leaving the teachers to deal with them while trying to instruct a class. Furthermore, this school is BIG on group punishment and consistently punishes the entire class for behavioral issues. The admin team really doesn't care to communicate with parents and when they do, often just blow you off. The school as a whole is extremely unorganized and has the reputation of accepting students who have been kicked out of other schools. Their #1 goal is to keep enrollment #s up and won't sacrifice those regardless of the severity of the issue. They have an extremely large turnover of teachers (an alarming amount choose not to return to Mevers) which is due to the lack of support they receive. They also hire teachers who aren't even qualified to teach. I highly recommend really looking into this school before making a decision. The end of this school year can't come soon enough. We won't be returning.

I want to love this school but we do not. We have been there since it's 2nd year open. Turn over rates for students, staff and teachers are crazy. Communication is sub par. The way they handle issues is very one sided. The principal is non-existent. You can not reach her, you have to jump through a million hoops and all you will get is the dean. You don't even see Coyle in the car loop any more. Its really a shame, I had high hopes for this school but we are switching next year.

Very poor Communication. My son apparently destroyed school property on a Friday. I was not notified about anything until a Monday when I was called 5 minutes before I pulled into the schools lot that he was going to be suspended.

I've had a great experience working at this school. I've worked at many districts in the country and this is the first place that truly gives the teacher the autonomy to teach the standards that is best for their students in their classroom. No school is perfect but Mevers understands that micromanaging educators from a political stance is not going to increase the academic goals of our students.

Mevers School of Excellence has a much higher than normal turnover rate for students, staff and teachers. Nearly half of the teachers are brand new (teaching for 3 years or less) to teaching as well. Mevers is a for profit charter school that receives funds that other local public schools need. They rely HEAVILY on parent donations and volunteering to run any extracurricular activities which often get cancelled last minute due to lack of interest. They use antiquated methods of discipline (such as punishing the whole group for a few kids acting out). They punished the kindergarteners, first and second graders by removing their second recess because state test scores were lower than they wanted. My son tested in the 75th percentile the first week of school and the 50th at the end of the year. What they are doing is not working but they wont listen to outsiders as any negative comments are not allowed. Test scores are also not available online for students under 3rd grade, so theres no way to know that test scores improved at all. They are making school a miserable place for kids as Ive noticed the kids all look despondent going into and out of the school daily; and my child, who was once excited to go to school every day, slowly lost interest and absolutely hated it by the end of the year. I would steer clear of this school. It has not improved, regardless of how many times administration has changed.

The school has gone through many changes in the last three years. It's very bright spot was in 2020 just before the pandemic there was a lot of positive energy in the school. Students and staff could not wait to come to school. When the pandemic hit, the school did not skip a beat. When students were invited back into the building for the 2020-21 school year the experience was amazing. Students were learning at a high level, there was accountability for students. After a change in leadership however, things quickly began to go down hill. MANY great teachers who taught during the pandemic left the school. The 2021-2022 year became even more disappointing. No homework for students, for large parts of the year my own children had no teacher teaching Science or English. How does that happen? I will not be bringing my students back to this school just based on the fact that they are clearly not getting a great education because they cannot keep teachers at this school.

Mevers School of Excellence has been a fantastic school. I am very proud to be part of such a wonderful community. I feel that my 2 children are known, loved and challenged on a daily basis. The staff is caring and respectful. I love seeing the administration in the morning smiling and happy. This is a great way to start my day off, let alone getting the kids excited in the morning.

Being the parent of a kindergartner faced with the tough decision to send my child to school or do virtual learning and trying to decide where to begin her education I couldnt be happier that I chose Mevers School of Excellence. The staff are supportive and responsive and there is constant communication from leadership. Her teacher is engaging and is prompt to respond to my concerns or questions. My daughter learns something new every week and builds on the fundamentals established early on. I am looking forward to seeing her grow and learn each year.

I give this school 5 stars. My kids has been there since it open in 2017. First year was great, the second was good, and the 3rd year was great. Especially with the virtual and online learning. The teachers did a great job virtually teaching and online lessons. It was tough and hard for both students and parents, but it was a great.

I am a lot more comfortable now than the beginning of last year. Capable leaders make a big difference. You can see our kids success is their goal. No school is perfect and Mevers is working hard to get to an elite level. I love the small class setting and it is a blessing to be able to have my child in a charter school.

Very disappointed with this school. I feel that the academics are lacking. My son is very advanced and the teacher has made this known several times throughout the year but I feel he has been held back due to the other children in his class. It would have been helpful if his work was more challenging and if his extra curricular/special areas were more challenging.

Homework was a joke. A spelling list and maybe an occasional math sheet every now and again. Never ever saw any homework for spanish class, that is until we had to convert to elearning....I felt the homework was not challenging enough for my 2nd grader.

Lot of leadership changes happened in the 2019-2020 school year which left parents and students confused. We had an incident at the school and I wrote an email to address it and not one person from the leadership responded to my email. Went in to have a conference and the principal did not even know why I was showing up to speak to him! Nothing was solved during the meeting. I left very dissatisfied.

My daughter started out at a failing public school. She cried every single day of Kindergarten, First grade and the beginning of Second grade. Then she got accepted to Mevers and everything changed. She began to look forward to school, made great new friends, and thrived educationally. There have been hiccups of course, but this school is a priceless blessing in my child's life!

Great, we had a rough start to the 2019/2020 school year. The end of the year was a complete turn around and I was happy with how seamlessly the school was able to transform the cultural of the school from physical to online learning.

My kindergartener had 30 minutes of homework, after spending 8 hours at school. It was so hard on him and me. He needed time to play and unwind. Luckily, we moved him schools and he is much happier and still likes school.

I had high hopes for this school. During our tour of the school, my husband and I noticed that the kids looked sad. Our son was so young, that I thought it was okay and that he would love the school anyways. I noticed him becoming withdrawn and negative about learning, so we pulled him out and sent him to a different school.

Any time you get data from some of the teachers, l have notice misspelled words incorrect grammar. And these are the teachers, my gosh, who are they teaching when the cannot spell or use the English language correctly.

I rate this school a C- lack of communications with parents, when the resource teacher disappeared, parent was not notified that their child was not going to the resource classes that they needed to keep up with the other students. School never explained what happened to the resource teacher. Terrible leadership at the school, someone needs to monitor this school it will become apparent that something is wrong.
