Walnut Hill Elementary School

Something needs to be done about a person being on the school’s playground, taking pictures of certain children and giving the entire classroom candy . I’m deeply concerned about the safety and treatment of some of the students that attend because things I have observed raises plenty of questions that need to be answered and addressed at Walnut Hill Elementary School.

though, it was several years ago; this school was a complete utter nightmare. bullying was only physical once but other times very verbal, i was an outcast and only had 1 friend who i hardly even talked to because the kids took every opportunity to single me out, the teacher was no help what-so-ever and may have encouraged it. i was too young to understand a lot of things, nor did i understand why no one liked me, my only comfort was my puppy: Juju who's long deceased now. i remember crying one day after falling out of my chair and hurting myself, everyone laughed at me. i was pushed off of the swing once and i was suspended for playing with a neckless i found on the ground- i was too scared to go back to the playground -that a child claimed was her's, i didn't know what that meant so i didn't bother to tell mom and i showed up the next day, to which i was berated by my own teacher.

this place was the worst and is a big part of a lot of my trauma, do NOT let your children learn here, move elsewhere if you can.

I don't know why their rating is low. All the staff that encountered especially the teachers are so nice and approachable. Food and things are free (unlike.in other schools we tried). So the low rating doesn't really reflect the school per se. Teachers are also compassionate about their students and they serve with a heart. Definitely recommended.

My daughter attended this school & it was a horrible experience. It got so bad my daughter did not want to get out of bed in the morning. I attempted to meet with her teacher to no avail. I then contacted the principal to address issues, but she defended the teacher who left early on the day I arrived at the school to meet her. My husband went to the school board in an attempt to rectify the problem & was met with what appeared to be indifference. I finally asked the principal to move my child to another class & she refused. Therefore, I withdrew my child from the school. It was the best decision I ever made. Without going into too many details, one day the teacher refused to allow one of my daughter's classmates to use the restroom. He ended up urinating on himself in class. My husband had to stop the child's mother from heading to the class to fight the teacher. There are plenty of other incidents but they are too many to name. I would not recommend this school to any parent. Save yourself the trouble & find an accredited school for your child to attend.

I was an active parent at Walnut Hill for over 9 years. Our kids were identified gifted and honor roll students throughout. There are unfortunate things that happen in all schools, we are not as bad as other schools in more afluent, better rated school districts. The stigma that a predominantly black population means the school is no good, is wrong. For the rest of the city that do not support our schools by sending their kids to private schools, you are missing out. A good student will succeed in any school. Stop sheltering your child and placing them where they only deal with their own race or socio-economic standing. Petersburg schools may not be perfect but they strive for excellence that's more that can be said for their neighboring school divisions. Walnut Hill is just as good for anyone seeking an outstanding education experience. Teachers are dedicated, administration is caring and attentive. This rating is unfair and the truth is the schools are great. Good job everyone keep up the good fight and we will succeed and be the best school division in the state! Also, Petersburg is one of the most beautiful, historic, and safest places to live.

My son has been going to this school for 2 years now. I am a very active parent and believes that no one cares more for his education than I do. The teachers I have come into contact with is great. I am not sure if its because I am an involved parent. My issue is the school is so unorganized. I have to constantly ask for things more than once, I sometimes have to take time out of my busy schedule to go up there and talk with someone. Sometimes when I do go in I would get attitude from the front office. If this school could be more organize and not play the blame game then I would keep my son in another year.

Out of all the schools in Petersburg, this is one of the best ones...but trust me, this place is a nightmare. Move elsewhere...

I as a parent would give this school a 10/10 rating. Love the dedication of the staff. My child appears to be happy, and he is consistently on the honor roll which makes me happy.
