I wasn't told until the middle of our daughter's senior year that she was at risk of not graduating because of 1 SOL. She had an honor roll report card. She took the SOL many times and had tutoring both inside and outside the school and the tutors agreed she knew it enough to pass it. She just had high testing anxiety. Long story short, she was not able to walk with her class and graduate with them. Meanwhile, she knew other kids who had straight D's all 4 years of high school and they got to walk because they passed a SOL. I vowed that day that I would never allow another one of my children to go to public school again. There were some teachers that were very nice, but teachers have no authority over the classroom now and they are overruled by the cruel system they work for. It was a truly devastating experience.

We were a little concerned that the school scores lower than some of the other schools in Suffolk, but have been pleasantly surprised at the quality of education or son receives. The school is big enough to provide ample opportunity for social and academic college readiness while maintaining an intimate environment to ensure each student is set up for success. The school provides opportunities so long as the student and parents are actively involved in the process.

I currently attend this school because my mom was stationed here a few years ago. I've always thought of Suffolk as my home because I like the community and the people. This school is exactly fine. I will say, it is the best school in Suffolk, but that is because there are only two other public high schools in the entire city. My teachers don't really push me as hard as they should. I read a review from another student who had the same opinions as me. It's true, this school really does only care about you passing the SOLs. Constantly throughout the year, teachers would say, "You need to know this to pass the SOL." Is that the only reason we need to know this? Not because we want to excel in life after we've graduated, but because we just need to meet the minimum requirements to graduate- just PASSING the SOLs. The clubs also aren't that involved in the school either. I would love to be on the student council, except for the fact that we don't really have one. I also feel like parents looking to put their child in this school should know that there are quite a few fights a week. Of course, we have police and admin to provide consequences to the kids who get into fights, but it was a concern for my parents as it should be for others. As I said, the admin does suspend and even expel kids who do not follow the school guidelines, but it's still something you should know. But here are my pros about this school-
The athletics here are great. I was on one of our athletic teams this past year and it was amazing. My teammates were the best and so was my coach. Even though we didn't exactly have a great season, I still had a lot of fun being on the team representing NR. That was something that kept me going even when the school itself got really difficult. I also met some really great people on the team, who are my best friends now. It did take some time to find a friend group for me, but the team really helped with that. Kids at this school are for the most part, pretty alright. NR is actually rather diverse. There are kids here from many different backgrounds, which all make them super interesting people. I'm not in the PLTW program at this school, but a few of my friends are. So if you're thinking about sending your child to this school for that program, I would highly recommend that. I know for a fact the PLTW teachers are amazing and so is the content they teach you. -Big thumbs up from me

In my experience, the teachers at this school don't seem to teach students to make a long lasting impact on their education, but only on their ability to pass the standardized testing at the end of the school year. I can quote many of my teachers telling me "My job is to get you to pass the SOLs", and so that's what they did. They constantly forced the curriculum onto us based on memory. It also seemed like many of the teachers i was getting did not KNOW HOW TO TEACH! My geometry teacher in 9th grade CONSTANTLY had kids switching out of her class, and some of the kids made better grades than me. Her teaching was very hard to keep up with beacuase she wasnt fluent in explaining the math to her students. She gave assignments that required math she hadn't yet taught us and so it affected student's grades. Another teacher i had who taught english, made her assignments too easy. I compared the work we were doing tot the work the other students of the other english teachers had and it seemed to be as if she was "babying" us! I'm not one to usually like challenges, but after being in this class, i felt as if i needed one. The teaching curriculum wasn't effective on me at all because the next grade level asked me of things that she hadn't prepared me for. My 9th grade science teacher only seemed to have us doing busy work if we weren't copying notes from his powerpoints that by the way needed to be 100% memorized because it was going to be your test. Once the standardized testing was done, we did nothing in his class. LITERALLY! He sat in the corner on his computer as always as we chatted away for the last 3 weeks of school. The dress code was unequally enforced and targeted towards girls. The administration always pointed out the things they saw the girls wearing, but not the boys. Many times i've seen girls be stopped in the hallway for showing their shoulders or wearing bottoms the rose above fingertip length, and they were sent to the office for it. then i see guys sagging their pants, exposing THEIR shoulders, and wearing violent attire and most of them never being questioned for it or only getting away with a slap on the wrist. i can quote the principal saying that the 3 inch minimum sleeve rule only applied to girls. The school has no control over illegal drug use, stealing, and sexual harassment. Their are no seasonal dances and clubs are underdeveloped
