This school is a total disaster. Teachers are disengaged or absent, classrooms are chaotic, and my kid learned almost nothing all year. Facilities are filthy and falling apart, bullying is ignored, and administration is arrogant and unresponsive.

Do not send your kid to the school if they are not perfect students. Neurodivergent kids; kids with learning disabilities, kids who have extra energy, are not welcome. They routinely punish kids and take away any type of social interactions, lunches with friends, 10 minute recesses, unless youre the perfect student. They will listen to your concerns, but they will not implement them in anyway. During parent teacher conferences, two or three teachers walked out on us in the middle of the conference.

This school does not show how students are supposed to live a Catholic life. There is multiple cases of bullying and the staff there has not done one thing to prevent it or help it. The school also doesnt have a counselor to help with students. A lot of people i know and their children have been a victim of their snarky teachers and of their especially disrespectful music teacher. Their music teacher called them neanderthals from the countryside, Slow/special
and picks on kids that try to stand up for them selves. I do NOT recommend this school to anyone. Very disappointed.And the dress code is very targeted towards girls and this is unfair because girls devolp at a young age and really quick. And if its a distraction for people maybe the adults need a class along with the boys to tell them how not to stare at these 12-13 year old girls.

Wow! I honestly dont have words. This school system is Horrible. The school is extremely sexist and unfair. Theyre sexist to the girls because the catholics see men as beings like God so the girls are treated horribly. There is constant Bullying. Even when a student says something about it. The teachers turn the cheek . But tell me how, a Boy in my grade broke another Boys arm and didnt get a referral because boys will be boys but, i got a referral for chewing gum. and Wearing tennis shoes outside of the dress code? seriously? They give WAY too much home work. On top of that they will assign this as homework read chapters 1,2,3 and 4 and study for your exam tomorrow. also turn in flashcards it Is extremely overwhelming and i go home and cry atleast 4 times a month. sometimes i can barely make it out of school without crying. If you have a son, and you want to send him here. Theres a chance it might not be much better .But if you have a daughter,I BEG you to not send her here. my first year at this school my body changed by 30 pounds in 4 months (thats super unhealthy for children) i beg and beg of you to not send your children here. the education is honestly crappy and the school claims to be super catholic but its really not. The teachers care more about your social media profiles than they do if your passing your classes.

Good school with great values however ,the amount of homework/study material is too much. My middle schooler is overwhelmed and stressed. Theres pretty much homework on every subject every day. If there is a science test the next day, my child still has homework in all the other subjects which take most of the 90 minute homework window. My kid is mentally exhausted and she cant even decompress during the weekend because shes stressed about all the homework/ study due next Monday.

We have been so pleased with Our Lady of Mount Carmel for our 2nd and 4th graders. They develop their minds, but while also focusing on building virtue and character. The curriculum is very traditional and thorough and the Sisters offer a special model and teaching of Catholic Faith that is unique to OLMC. We would highly recommended OLMC!

Excellent School! We have been so pleased with our experience - from our initial tour, to our enrollment, to the start of the school year - we received guidance and support the entire time. The faculty and staff are prompt with communication and they take the time to really get the children. The energy in the school is amazing and the blending of faith and education is right on point. Our entire family has been made to feel welcome and our children were accepted with open arms. I definitely recommend Our Lady Mount Carmel!

As Foreigners coming from France we found a great family at OLMC. The Dominican Sisters make the whole difference thanks to their total dedication to our children. They are devoted to improve their academic skills as much as their human development. They gave their life to God and their love to our children.
The teachers are on the same mind set. They are committed to their student way more than it is expected. We experienced their patience and professionalism with our four sons.
Another key to success for us arriving from abroad was also the fantastic Admissions Coordinator, Mrs. McKenna.
I truly recommend this amazing school if you are interested in raising your children into a loving atmosphere, enhanced by the catholic faith.

Our Lady Mount Carmel is more than a school it a faith community of love and friendship! They have been extra helpful as a military family that moved from 10 states away. The staff and teachers go above and beyond to show compassion and kindness with every child and whatever their needs may be.

I'm so happy to send my daughter to this school this year.
It's my first time to meet the school teachers, staff and I feel like they're devoting all of their time for kids.
My daughter used to attend public school, however we had this marvelous opportunity to attend Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
A lot has been changed in her perspective while attending here and when compared to normal public schools this was a bigger benefit to my child. Especially when it came to her education environment, teachers and her friends. Out of the many events that the school provided, I mostly enjoyed the availability of my daughters providence to the community through volunteering. She felt very proud of herself for doing something to benefit the community through her school and I of course was very proud as well to hear that. They also held an event called 'corner stone breakfast' which was an event where the 8th grade students would serve their family breakfast and/or perform their talents. As students who has a large step ahead of them with their new steps into high school, I felt the maturing of the students as they worked extremely hard for the events. It was very lovely to see this process of their lives. Because of all this participation brought by the students and the staff I feel as if this is the right path for many children to go through. I suggest this school very much. Although I have sent only one of my children to this school, I will send the rest of my children here from now on instead of the public schools in the area.

OLMC feels like a giant family and has been one of the best investments for our daughters future. We took our daughter out of public school to provide her with an excellent education and to also further her religious education. We are so happy we made the decision to place her in this amazing community.

OLMC is a wonderful, welcoming community. Majority of teachers have advanced degrees and are vested in helping each child be successful all while cultivating a Christ and faith centered journey. We love OLMC and our transition from the public school system to a faith based community has been wonderful. They embody the sentiments in their mission statement that students will learn in a " Christ- centered, educationally stimulating environment, where students recognize their God given gifts and achieve their highest potential." A noteworthy contrast to the public school sentiments " students will master state standards".
After a challenging year for so many- it is wonderful to see OLMC prioritize educating children, unapologetically, and safely during a pandemic. It's refreshing to see not only our children but other children happy and thriving at OLMC.

Before coming to OLMC, my son dreaded and hated going to school. Now he looks forward to it. He still resists doing homework - being a normal boy - but no longer loathes it. The biggest difference is that he isn't humiliated daily at OLMC. Instead, they promote a loving a safe atmosphere for children to grow and make real friends, with a solid academic background behind all of that.

My son began with OLMC in the fall last year, enrolled in Pre-K - age 3. He has never been happier and is learning SO much. OLMC faculty, staff, and teachers TRULY care for these children and their futures. My son loves going to school, loves his teacher, and loves OLMC and everything this school is about. Its heart warming to see his growth both academically and spiritually. So glad we found OLMC!!!

My daughter has been attending this school since Kindergarten and just loves it. The curriculum is at a high level which is great to prepare and transition your child for High School and later on for College. Parents involvement in your childs education is highly encouraged. Top notch academics. Great environment with other families of similar priorities - academics, hard work, classic subjects (cursive, thank you), moral teaching, and behavior. Great sense of community with other parents and families. Extra curricular at the lower grade levels can leave a little to be desired, but there are plenty of opportunities for sports outlets elsewhere.

My child has been in this school for 4 years. She is very excited to go to school everyday. The principal knows every child by name. The teachers are heavily invested in the class progress. There are weekly grade specific newsletter and weekly school wide newsletters. This school feels like family. The kids pray for each other. What a blessing even to non-Catholics!

My grandson is a student at this school and let me tell you, I'm more than pleased with this school. It's like a diamond hidden. The students, faculty and staff are on top of everything. I love how they pair the older kids with the younger kids. Everyone knows each other and help without even asking. If I had little ones this would be the school I would send then too. Hands Down....

I really wished I love this school more. I would really like to be more involved, however, I never seem to know what is going on. There is little information on the school's website that is helpful. Even the list of teachers doesn't specify the grade they teach. I have know idea when the home and school board meets because that information is not on the website as well. The carpool is very time consuming. It is difficult to meet any parents or have discussion with teachers at the end of the day. The feeling of family or community, that I wished for just isn't present. There are no after school activities for young children, not even Girls Scouts for first grade, or soccer for preschool. The teachers only conference once a year and there are now written comments on the report cards. Public schools would never get away with that. It is a financial sacrifice for my single income family to seen my children there, just wish my heart wasn't so heavy about it. My husband and I attended Catholic schools for 12 years, this is why we have tolerated this school. I value Catholic education, however, there is much room for improvement at OLMC.

Your child will spend half of their lunch time in "silent lunch", school policy. When they go outside for recess (they go outside even when the public schools deem that it is too cold) they must run laps. The teachers and principal will not address your concerns if they do not agree with you. I really don't find the kids to be any nicer or better (something the school and parents lead you to believe) than the kids in public school. I have not found them to be very accepting of the non-Catholics either and that is very sad. We are Catholic and that really bothers me since they like to say that they are a Christian school. It's time for us to move on. Spend a full day or two and see what really goes on during a day. If you decide to go there be sure to go in at different times to see what happens during the day. Class sizes can be large too. If they do not have 30 kids they will not split the classes. They also will not tell you this until the day that you find out who the teacher will be for the year. Oh yeah, by that time you have signed your contract and have either paid for the year or, signed that you will pay the year.

OLMC is a good school, if you are Catholic. They are not very inclusive of students of other faiths and seem to go out of their way to exclude students and families who do not attend OLMC (parish). Some of the class sizes are too large for a small private school. The academic program is strong, but technology available to students is in great need of an upgrade.

Our family has been part of the community of Our Lady of Mount Carmel school for 5 years now. We switched our oldest daughter to OLMC from public school where she was struggling to focus in class and complete her work. The teachers at OLMC helped her stay on track in class and worked with us to make sure she was able to complete her homework. We saw improvement in her grades immediately. Now she's in 6th grade and doing wonderfully. Her sister is in 3rd, and also doing well. Both girls have excelled in math and science and language arts. OLMC is more than just a school. It's an active community where parents, teachers, staff and students all work together. I think the emphasis on service is great. Families volunteer at the school to help with school events throughout the year, and I think that sets a great example for our kids. I cannot recommend OLMC enough. This has been the best school for our children!

We are a military family who have moved MANY times and have had our four children in numerous Catholic schools across the nation. OLMC is,in our opinion, the very best of all the elementary/middle schools our children have attended. The Dominican Sisters, faculty, staff, and family community cannot be matched. The academic curriculum has helped our children grow intellectually and achieve numerous goals at not only this educational level, but also in high school, and college. Their time at OLMC certainly provided a solid foundation for them academically, and most importantly of all, it helped them to grow spiritually. The strong Catholic identity of this school is a most welcome facet of their education particularly in these morally precarious times in which we live. Our family has been an OLMC School family for the past 8 years. I am very pleased with the educational standards and curriculum taught there. Additionally, OLMC is concerned with the "whole child" rather than being focused solely on education. Social, community, religion, service, and self -esteem to name only a few. Although no school is perfect, I am certain you would be pleased and confident in this choice. Sadly, we have only one more year there before moving on to High a School. Our daughter started 1st grade at OLMC this year and we can't say enough positive things about the school. She is both challenged and supported in her academic work. One of the things I love most about Mt. Carmel is the school's emphasis on educating the whole child. Focus is placed on academics, community, and citizenship. The art teacher is phenomenal. Communication between the school and families is clear, consistent, and frequent! Opportunities to get involved are plenty, and are flexible for working parents. We love OLMC!

Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a Catholic school in Newport News serving preschool, elementary and middle school students. It is a GREAT school! Our son is in the 3 year old pre-K class. We wanted to start him out slowly because he has always been home with me, so he is a half day student a couple of days a week. Classes are taught by nuns and lay people. At the risk of sounding corny, you can really feel the love when you enter the school. The teachers love what they do and love the children. I will never forget how the principal said "we are trying to raise saints". I think that is a beautiful sentiment. We want to maintain his innocence as much as possible. This is the perfect school.

As a parent, my wife and I wanted the best education, opportunity, safe environment, and a moral/religious teaching for our 3 kids. Unequivocally, we have to say OLMC is an outstanding school and our children are very happy to be there. Already, we've had 1 child graduate OLMC and is now attending Peninsula Catholic, testament to a solid educational foundation. Our other 2 children attend OLMC and are getting good grades (learning!) and are active in sports, art, and band. The school workload is appropriate with routine homework that teaches not only the subject, but also time management. Be prepared for writing assignments, science fair projects, nightly reading, and Catholic based religious education. We've tried public schools and another private school. Again, OLMC proves to be the ideal venue for the melding of concepts, moral teaching, and a solid education. OLMC is a safe environment that will not tolerate bullying, disrespecting adults/teachers or other students, and the staff is easy to work with. In closing, OLMC is a great school for our family and we have been very pleased for the past +4-years.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is an excellent choice for Christian Education. I am pleased with the small class sizes and attention to each learner. It is nested in a beautiful setting with an out of view private playground that my children love. As a parent it is important to feel my children are protected and have freedom to play without being in the public view from the road/street. The school has so much to offer; cafeteria with hot meals, a full time nurse, fenced in middle school, transportation,nvolunteer opportunities, a variety of clubs for students, community service and many more. I am so glad we are part of the family at OLMC and being anywhere else is not even a thought!

My kids love this school!!! Best school ever!!!! I have one child in first grade and another in Pre-K. The staff is really good and will go out of their way to help you and your children. This school promotes success for its students which is something that should be admired... especially in Newport News.

Wonderful school! My daughter is in her 2nd year there and I love the staff and sense of family that the school provides. There is NO COMPARISON to public schools in Newport News- even BC Charles and Gildersleeve don't compare- which my older children attended.

We are a new family this year, and could not be more pleased. My son in middle school is having great success with being a gifted child there. The school has continued to encourage and find ways to keep him challenged. The lower school has been a success story as well, the teachers make very good use of classroom time so homework is not filled with busy work, just reinforcement of concepts all ready taught. We really are enjoying the school, very refreshing.

OLMC is a wonderful school filled with extraordinary teachers and students. Our child has gone there since kindergarten and to show you how much we love it, we live in Williamsburg and commute there everyday!! The feeling of community is very strong and academically we couldn't ask for more.

Initially we were very happy with OLMC. After a year, however, we are seeing some major flaws which will be making our decision to leave much easier. The school offers very little technology education. My daughter has learned more about using computers from just playing at home than what she will ever get at school. For a small private school, the class sizes are HUGE which makes individualized attention impossible. Also, the discipline code is very strict, especially at the lower grade levels. My child has a discipline report almost every day for very minor infractions, yet has been essentially bullied by other students and I have seen no evidence of anything being done in this situation. And, now with our new contracts, every family is required to work bingo. I have worked bingo and know that it is terrible. The players are rude and the level of smokiness in the room makes it very difficult for those with asthma to breathe. It's sad that the public school alternatives are worse than this.

My child has been at OLMC for four years. We are strongly considering going to another school next year. The physical plant leaves a lot to be desired. My child has had very little computer learning compared to other schools that his brothers have attended (also Catholic). He has had 2 out of 4 great years with outstanding teachers-sadly, this year is not one of them. The classes are large, with very little personal attention. I believe my bright child is bored, and the school does not seem to be able to accommodate many different levels of intellect.. And , the last straw was the school contract this year. We registered two months ago, which requires a fee. This month's final contract had a big surprise-forced bingo attendance Monday nights for an unspecified number of times next year, with a 200 dollar fine for missing your night. We have been pleased with the religious education, and the large religious presence at the school-there are 4 Dominican nuns at this school, which is rare these days.

I am new to OLMC, and am very pleased with my daughter's academic and religious education, and most importantly the overall tone set by the teachers and the principal. The environment is nuturing while encouraging children to challenge themselves and explore the world around them. Sister Dominic is hands on and genuinely cares about the students and their families. My child loves her teacher and the students readily welcomed her from the start. We are so glad that we came to OLMC.

My oldest is an 8th grader at OLMC. She started in Pre-K and we are very pleased with all that this school has offered her. This is an outstanding community to help develop a child both academically and spiritually. No, not every thing is perfect. However, nothing can be perfect with the exception of God. I have grown up Catholic and thought that I had been taught so much of my religion growing up (I went to public school) But I have learned so much through what OLMC has taught my child about our religion. I would not trade the fact that my children can pray in school and freely speak about our God. I would highly recommend OLMC.

My son started kindergarten at OLMC this year and I attended when I was a girl. This school has fabulous teachers and a wonderful atmosphere. As a former teacher I am impressed by the standards of both behavior and academics that OLMC maintains. The school is small enough to have a family feeling but large enough for the students to have variety. I plan on sending all 3 of my children to OLMC in the coming years.

My experience with OLMC School has been superior. My child, a fifth grader, entered OLMC School in the fourth grade, having been in the public school system the prior years. The quality of education has exceeded my expectations with academics, teachers, administrators, etc. all being top notch. OLMC School has a long-standing, excellent reputation in the Hampton Roads community. They strive to educate the whole child (mind, body and spirit). The academics are outstanding as evidenced by their Blue Ribbon achievement, without the feel of an "academy". The goal is to offer a solid education, emphasizing the Roman Catholic faith to all those who desire it for their children. No educational environment is without flaws, but the administration, faculty and staff strive to provide a platform in which each child can cultivate and enrich their God-given gifts and talents. Our Lady of Mount Carmel is by far the best school I've ever sent my child to. The teachers are professional, educated and experienced. The academics are challenging, and the teachers are right there to see that each student understands what is being taught. Aside from academics, the students grow in the Catholic faith. Christian values, daily religion and weekly mass are a very important part of this school. The Principal is easy to approach, responsive, and demonstrates excellent leadership. She genuinely cares about the students and knows each one by name. Parents have many ways to get involved, and there is an open door policy. I am comfortable knowing that my child is at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, and am very happy with the education and values that are taught here.

I am very disappointed with OLMC. My child attended OLMC starting in Kindergarten. In 5th grade we had to pull our child out due to bullying. I had encountered other parents who had complained about the tolerance for this behavior but regret that I did nothing about it until it happened to my child. It is really a failure of the entire school community. Parents are sending their children to OLMC but not teaching them to be Christians. I am aware of a child who was attacked by an older student in the bathroom and a child who required stitches due to a fight at recess. I think that if you are looking at attending this school you need to be aware that there are problems with bullying that the school is unwilling to address in a firm and consistent manner that will eradicate the problem. One additional thing that has always been a concern of mine is that I percieve that the staff is not very happy. Observing the staff during car pool, one rarely sees the teachers smiling. I have felt that some of the teachers regard parents as adversaries. My experience with the academics is that they are no better or worse than public schools.
