Our military family, having moved to Virginia in summer 2022, was blessed to have found a supportive and educational community with SJS, marking our first engagement with Catholic traditions. SJS has been incredibly positive, offering both a welcoming environment and a strong academic foundation for our daughter. The school has been instrumental in our daughter's achievements throughout 4th and 5th grade, including maintaining honors and developing new skills such as playing the ukulele and piano, as well as engaging in innovative art projects. She has been able to improve her physical fitness and sociability by participating in the run club and spirit team. Staff and faculty have considerately made themselves available to problem solve any concerns or dilemmas. Transitioning to a new place can be challenging, especially for military families, so finding a school that provides such care and enrichment is truly valuable. As we prepare for another relocation with the military, we are deeply grateful for the positive influence SJS has had on our daughter’s academic career. We pray our next location offers similar opportunities that SJS has that have contributed to our daughter’s personal growth.

We are a military family,
and having to readjust to a new environment is sometimes not that easy,.But the staff there are all EXTREMELY WELCOMING and make the enrollment process easy !! The Teachers there actually take the time to get to know their students and their families as well. An to me that means ALOT. The school itself is very rich in History and is located in the Historic District of Petersburg. I can promise you that once you attend St Joseph’s school you are most definitely treated like family. I always highly recommend this school to all

I am so grateful for St. Joseph School. We entered into this special community when my children hit middle school, and it was exactly what they needed. A loving, academically-focused school where God is a part of every day. Teachers truly care, administrators are readily available for anything you may need, and I feel that my children are better equipped for high school because of the rigor and high standards. Thank you SJS for filling a special need in our community. It is worth every penny.

We are so happy we moved our kids from their previous private school to SJS! The curriculum is more challenging, and our kids (Kindergarten and 5th Grades) are happier and more engaged than ever. It truly is a well-rounded education that helps the children grow intellectually, socially, and spiritually. Our kids' teachers are true rock-star teachers, and we're so grateful for them. We've been really impressed with the curriculum and modes of instruction.

Father Rossi is wonderful with the kids! He has a way of engaging with the kids in a way that they listen, understand, and are entertained. Our daughter loves how he brings humor and humility when he speaks to the students. He makes her laugh at every homily he gives! Last week for Catholic Schools week, he put on a Lion costume (the school mascot) to visit the kids at school - they cracked up and loved it!

The front office staff and the principal, Mrs. Owens, are all so warm, friendly, hardworking, kind, compassionate, and dedicated. We felt welcomed and immediately felt at home there.

Another thing we love about the school is how diverse it is - yet we all share a common devotion to giving our kids the very best education and environment, so it's been a lot of fun to get to know the other families at the various school events and field trips.

Our only regret is that we didn't move the kids to SJS sooner!

St Josephs has been amazing. The faculty knows my student and I by name. When I first contacted St Joseph they got back to be quickly. They answered all my questions and helped tremendously with tution concerns. This is our first year and we will be staying!

St. Joseph School is such a special place. We are new to the SJS family but felt an instant connection and warm welcome from the very beginning. We have been so impressed with how Principal Owens, all staff and teachers have prepared and foster an inviting, safe and comfortable learning environment for the children. It’s evident that the faculty members are passionate about the work they do and serving the SJS community. Information is clearly communicated and shared openly, while teachers are accessible and quick to respond. We feel so fortunate to be part of this incredible school now and are excited about the new opportunities for our children. We couldn’t be prouder about making the decision for our family to join the SJS community.

If you're child is having a hard time with some the teacher's work on it more and give them more attention in that thing that they have trouble with and extra work for home so you understand it I have seen kids say that they have a lot of homework it is acasonaly that they won't have any

In fith grade of 2017-18 majority of the class played kick ball and it was and still is competitive so one kid was mean to other students in the class the teacher had a talk with the class about everything but after there was no more bullying and that was the first time I have ever seen this happen before in 9 years

On a scale of one through ten I would give it a million it is amazing they treat you like family my class we are all best friends and I love going there everyday and see my friends it's the best school I have been to

I am very pleased as a parent with the learning that is going on at St. Joseph School. I have seen it first hand watching my pre-schooler turn into a 1st grader enjoying his learning and homework. It is a struggle financially but well worth it. My hat goes off to the teachers and all they do for their students. You see and feel the love as you walk through the building. The building itself could be in better shape but they are working on it. As well as improving the technology usage by the students.

St Joseph's is wonderful place and a perfect place for my daughter. She was being overlooked in a class of 33 kids in public school, and was falling behind. She is now in a positive and encouraging environment and is catching up with her peers. I owe this to SJS. She isn't a number, but part of the St Joe's community. Our whole family feels a part of it. She is in the choir and playing the flute. Neither available in public elementary schools. Oh, and she is very proud of her catholic school plaid uniform.

I have to disagree with the previous review from Feb 6, 2012. The leadership is new as of this year and it is quite strong. SJS has increased their enrollment by nearly 30 percent in the last year which puts enrollment at a very healthy number. There is a lot underway now that will improve the school for the long term. The school consistently molds adolescents into upstanding young leaders who will have the skills, confidence, and morals to succeed after they leave SJS. The teachers are dedicated and fantastic and have the time and energy to work with students individually to meet their needs. You won't find a better Pre K-8th grade school in the Tri Cities area. The school also has a partnership with the University of Notre Dame's ACE program which has helped bring young, energetic teachers to the school to compliment the skilled veteran teachers already at SJS.

Unfortunately St. Joseph's is lacking in many key areas. Every organization is only as strong as it's leadership. The administration is weak and constantly changing. Most of the teachers are very rigid and set in there ways. Teachers are unwilling to work with students at their individual levels and needs. Hopefully, through time the school will modernize it's facilities, up it's standards for teachers and staff, and once a again become a shining light within the community.

St. Joseph's provides highly qualified, positive & caring teachers, and a challenging academic program, in an energetic environment that is diversified culturally and economically, like "the real world". St. Joseph's Catholic School welcomes all faiths. Administration is experienced and forward thinking. Dually accredited (SACS and VCEA), St. Joe's was accepted in 2010 (among the first in Virginia) into the ACE program through The University of Notre Dame. Currently, (2011) 4 teachers are working on Masters Degrees through this resource program. The school is strongly supported by parental and community involvement and dedication. Students learn valuable lessons through community outreach and service. Each morning begins with prayer, The Pledge of Allegiance, and the school's "Peacemaker Pledge, creating a strong foundation for how each child begins and conducts his or her day. St. Joe's offers a strong academic program, small classes (allows more individual help and more in-depth teaching). Last year (in 5th grade) my child began SAT prep! Foreign language, art, technology, music and sports are also included. New this year, programs for Homeschool and Virtual High School.
