As a parent of a student at this school, I feel it’s important to share an experience prospective families should consider. After raising a concern about a statement made to students regarding differential treatment, I observed a noticeable shift in how our family was engaged by administration. Rather than continuing to address the issue collaboratively, the process shifted toward financial matters. Expectations around outstanding balances were elevated within a compressed timeframe, despite previously communicated hardship and a history of working with the school to resolve balances over time. No clear or workable payment structure was presented during that period. Ultimately, this resulted in my children being unable to continue at the school. From my perspective, the underlying concern involving my son was not resolved, and the process became increasingly focused on financial obligations rather than a collaborative path forward.

Administration is terrible, and they don't help get you into college. My parents chose to send their 3 daughters there, me included, and they regret sending us there so much. I have so many examples and situations that happened at this school. Please send your children to Collegiate or Trinity if you want a private school. The boy's school is amazing. Send your boys to St. Chrisphors, but please save your daughters and don't let them go through St. Catherines.

We have two lower school daughters currently at St. Catherine’s and we couldn’t be happier with our choice of school for them. The admissions process for our oldest was full of questions and lots of discussion for my husband and I because neither of us grew up in Richmond, so we were evaluating multiple private schools on an even footing. Ultimately, we felt that the all-girls environment and welcoming St. Catherine’s community were the right fit for her. Now our younger daughter is also a St. Catherine’s student. Both girls are challenged every day to get out of their comfort zone academically, but are also supported in their areas of individual opportunity. Their teachers recognize each of their strengths and weaknesses and we have been amazed at the insightful comments during parent-teacher conferences! Not only do the teachers and administration know the girls’ personalities, but they also just know girls in general. We have seen this pulled through to the way topics are taught, how they designed the playground, how they approach conflict, and the special activities the girls do (my favorite is Puttin’ on the Hits dance!). Lastly, my 1st grader has referred to St. Catherine’s as magical and really, that is all I need to hear to know it’s the right place for her.

Choosing a school for our daughter was not something we took lightly. Our family had both public and private school experiences, so we evaluated all our options. Engaging with the admissions team, spending time on campus, and speaking with other families all positively contribute to our decision. Our daughter started at St. Catherine’s for the Early Learners program and is now in her 5th year at St. Catherine’s. I am certain that we made the right decision - the confidence, kindness and respect that is instilled in these girls is unparalleled. Their differences are recognized and celebrated, and every member of the school is happy to step in when needed. I could not be prouder of the person my daughter is becoming and I know so much of it has to do with St. Catherine’s. She has a love of learning and excitement for new challenges that will only help her as she continues to grow. During our initial tour, I remember someone saying that St. Catherine’s would become your extended family and there really is no better way to describe it. Of course, the academics, facilities and opportunities afforded are top notch but the most important thing to us has always been ensuring our daughter is genuinely happy and this is evident every day.

We moved to Richmond, VA in my daughter’s kindergarten year and looked at several area schools. We found that the admissions team and everyone we encountered at St. Catherine’s School really took the time and extra effort to get to know our daughter. They understood exactly where she was and what she needed to be a successful student. Also, we felt genuinely welcomed into the school community, even in the admissions process. This made us confident in choosing St. Catherine’s for our daughter’s education.
Since joining the school, my daughter is so excited to go to school every day. When she comes home she describes all the amazing things that she has learned with so much purpose and eloquence. In her eyes, St. Catherine’s is a magical place full of learning exciting things with the best teachers! And I have to agree, I am constantly wowed by the entire experience… excellent academics, inspiring teachers, exciting extracurriculars, close sense of community, and always an emphasis on service to others.
We are so happy to be part of the St. Catherine’s community and thankful that we can give this incredible educational experience to our daughter.

Our family is born and raised for generations in Richmond and always attended public school, however with Covid and virtual learning we reached out to St. Catherine’s to keep our daughters in-person. Now that we see how incredible a day at school can be, we can never go back! Of course your kids will get math and reading at any school, but all the other enrichment they get at St.Catherine’s everyday is amazing. Dance, Spanish/ Or Chinese, art, science, technology, PE, chapel, library, and religion all give the girls a fun filled day or learning. The performances they put on in the beautiful theater are confidence building and memorable for all. The teachers are happy and motivated in their jobs and you can tell. If you are curious in the least about St. Catherine’s, then definitely go on a tour.

We applied to St Catherine's School when my daughter would be entering 2nd grade. We lived out of town and were very worried about the process while living outside of the Richmond area. The admissions staff were incredible in helping us navigate the admissions process and making special arrangements for our daughter to do the tour, testing and classroom visit experience on days that we would be in town house hunting.
Our daughter is now a Fourthie (4th grade) and has thrived as a Saint. She loves the all girl environment and we have watched her self esteem blossom with the incredible support and leadership at the Lower School. She has created truly special friendships that will most likely be for life.
As a parent, there are many qualities at St Catherine's that I consider a strength. The focus on math, science and religion are a few. Now that parents are allowed back on campus, I have truly enjoyed hearing my daughter sing in the choir at chapel, volunteering in the lower school library and attending special events such as the Blessing of the Animals, dance performances, and "specials" week where your daughter is celebrated.
We are so happy that we chose St Catherine's for our daughters elementary experience and look forward to her moving into the middle school in the fall where I'm sure we will continue to see our daughter excel.

Our experience with St. Catherine's has been fantastic since my girls were in the Early Learner program. The teachers have been amazing and have been truly supportive and accommodating to each of my girls individual personalities and needs as they've gone through the program, allowing them to really come out of their shell and find confidence and excitement through learning. I have been thoroughly impressed each year and am grateful that my kids will graduate from this school. The teachers are dedicated and engaging with the girls, challenging them and helping them reach their full potential. The campus is gorgeous with state of the art facilities and with a multitude of amenities. St. Catherine's is a truly incredible place for my girls to not only learn, but to thrive and grow into well rounded young women ready to take on the world!

I have two elementary aged daughters at St. Catherine's. The St. Catherine’s admissions team made an effort to get to know not only my daughters but our entire family during the application process. My husband and I attended a variety of the admissions offerings and were able to get a feel for the school, the teachers and administration, the students, and other families, which made us confident in our decision to send our girls here.

We feel so welcomed by the entire St. Catherine’s community. We love the size of the school; it is small enough that it feels like a family, but big enough to offer so many activities. We love the focus of the school to develop the students academically, to encourage physical and mental health, and to develop the girls into conscientious citizens.

My daughters adore their teachers and genuinely enjoy going to school every day. We just had parent teacher conferences and it was amazing to see the insight the teachers had into my daughters. They have gotten to know the girls, have worked hard to determine their best learning styles, and implement an individualized approach to them every day.

My daughters are challenged daily. Small math and reading groups mean they are taught to their exact abilities, and the pace of what they have learned already is impressive. Each day brings something new for them to be excited about. My third grader looks forward to checking on her science experiment, learning a new song in band practice, reading me the book she made in Chinese class, and completely immersing in a subject by reading a book, writing about it, and doing an art project to compliment it. My kindergartener loves getting to play math games with a friend, bringing home a new sight word booklet, showing me the dance she is learning, and telling me all about why leaves change color in the fall. But most importantly, every morning at drop off, my girls have huge smiles on their faces and happily jump out of the car to run to their new friends on the playground. They have both told me how happy they are at their new school, and I can see for myself that they are thriving.

This is my daughter's first year at St. Catherine's School and she is thriving. Her Kindergarten experience has been stellar and we have seen growth in just the very few months when she started in August. The admissions process went very smoothly and the admissions department were extremely helpful in every step. Every day, my daughter comes home with a huge smile on her face and goes through every detail of what she learned and how much she loves her teachers. This is the greatest gift a parent could receive seeing how happy and excited she is about school. We could not have chosen a more perfect place for our daughter to learn, flourish with the amazing guidance of her teachers and make lasting friendships. I highly recommend St. Catherine's School!

My parents sent me here for the education, and it’s safe to say that this is one of the best schools in the area. I’m glad I got to be here, but I often feel immensely isolated from the majority of my grade due to being very far out of the “privileged kid” bubble. This makes recommending the school to anyone who is able to afford it very difficult, as it depends on the person. If you fit into the demographic, sure, go for it, but going there and being the minority or not being religious can be a lonely experience. I will say, however, that the teachers are absolutely brilliant people. It is so easy to tell that everyone down to the substitutes loves what they do, and it absolutely rubs off on me, oftentimes carrying me through particularly tiring days.

As I move on to high school (it’s a bittersweet feeling, that’s for sure), I hope this place continues to do well. I’ll definitely be coming back to visit as an alum!

My daughter transitioned to St. Catherine's School for sixth grade from another independent school. The transition was better than she or I could have ever imagined. From "Mom, I love they way they teach" to "I really need to make more friends", St. Catherine's was there supporting and encouraging her very step of the way. My daughter is thriving academically, socially, musically, and athletically because of the relationships she has with the administrators, teachers and coaches. She had an amazing middle school experience; and that trend has continued into high school. She is a current 9th grader and she is continuing to grow, thrive and flourish with the support of amazing teachers and friends. I highly recommend St. Catherine's.

We have two girls who attend St. Catherine’s. Our oldest daughter started off in 3rd grade while our youngest daughter started with the JK program. It has been amazing to see how quickly both girls have been embraced by the school and community. The level of attention and personalized instruction is more than we could have hoped for when we started looking at different educational options. As we were going through the application and decision-making process, we constantly came back to St. Catherine’s as they truly developed an educational curriculum around our daughters. We have now been at the school for a little more than 3 years and it could not have been any better. During the pandemic my wife and I consistently noted how fortunate we were to have a supportive educational environment that continued to adapt and change in response to our girl’s needs.

We applied to St. Catherine’s for our two elementary-school aged daughters during the 2020-2021 COVID school year. Despite an all-virtual admission process due to COVID, the robustness of the various programs St. Catherine’s offered gave us a great feel for the school and provided a high level of confidence that St. Catherine’s was the right school for our daughters. So far, St. Catherine’s has exceeded our expectations every step of the way. The transition to a new school has been very easy for our daughters – the students, teachers, staff, and families have all been fantastic and very welcoming – and our daughters are excited to go to school each day. The academic curriculum is excellent; our girls are being challenged and we can see them learning and growing as people. On multiple occasions since starting at St. Catherine’s we’ve had that feeling that we made the right decision, and that’s a good feeling to have!

Girls with learning disabilities are supported very well and are given extra time on assignments when needed. These things are kept very private between students and teachers.

Our school counselors are very effective and welcoming and are always willing to meet with students to address bullying issues.

St. Catherine’s is more than a school to me. It’s a second home, a second family. The girls there make me feel comfortable and keep me laughing. The teachers are engaging and push me to be my best self. The community of St. Catherine’s is one I’m proud to be a member of and helps me build the future I see for myself everyday.

My daughter started as a 5th grader and we’ve been thrilled with the welcome from educators, families and the girls!

Posted: October 30, 2019

St. Catherine’s works to teach students responsibility for their work without burdening them with too much.

Posted: October 30, 2019

Our family had been thrilled with how our daughter’s teachers have really gotten to know her as a person; where her strengths are as well as where she needs to be encouraged.

Assignments are meaningful. Students are encouraged to think critically and formulate work within a process.

The teachers are extremely dedicated to student success. They go above and beyond to ensure that the students feel prepared and understand the subjact matter material.

The alumnae from the school are leaders and contributors on their college campuses and in the workplace. They are vocal and strong in creating a presence of belonging in whatever spaces they choose to coexist in.

We have been at St. Catherine's since kindergarten and are now in High School. Our daughter has thrived in an environment that encourages independent thinking, kindness, and service to others. Our daughter has great confidence and has found her place. St. Catherine's has a place for the artsy girl, the robotics girl, the sporty girl, the theatre girl, the bookish girl, the social girl, the country and the city girl. Differences are encouraged and celebrated and each girl is helped to bring out the best in them. We love that the faculty are not teaching to a SOL, the class sizes are small, but there is every offering you can imagine. No one school can please 100 % of the time, but we feel that St. Catherine's comes close and strives for excellence.

Ended up not being a concern at all. Girls (and parents) have been very welcoming and supportive. Teachers are approachable and available. Our daughter has grown and matured. She is getting a fantastic education from faculty that truly cares. I recommend wholeheartedly!

New parents--try to get involved if at all possible. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities! This is a great way to meet people and to feel connected in a new place.

We moved our daughter to St. Catherine's from a highly rated west end public school for high school in order to better prepare her for college. It is hands down the best decision we have made for her. The admissions process was far and above better than other private schools that to which we applied. Once our daughter was enrolled the warm welcome continued starting in early summer with the assignment of a buddy family and other welcome activities. Once the academic year started we witnessed the high level of teaching and involvement between the staff and students. The all girl environment has allowed our daughter to try out for positions and feel more confident than she ever has before. St. Catherines is truly a special place that we as a family feel is home. The girls are very kind and the faculty sets the tone for that. If you are thinking of private school for your daughter I would highly recommend St. Catherines.

My daughter joined St. Catherine's School for high school, after spending elementary and middle school at other local private schools. She has had a wonderful experience - the academics are stellar as are sports and other extra-curricular activities. The tone is set by the administration - the head of school is a very impressive individual. The teachers and the admin are very focused on living their mission of providing girl-centered education. We don't fit the perceived stereotype of a St. Catherine family - and yet, we have been embraced by the community and our daughter has had an amazing experience.

What an amazing school. I would not have my child anywhere else. She is getting a girl-centered education and I have watched her confidence and abilities flourish in this environment. The values program and chapel program are exceptional. Students need not be Episcopalian, or even Christian, to get a lot out of these programs. The community is welcoming and benefits from members of all faiths.

My daughter's teachers see her as an individual and spend time working with her on her strengths and where she needs help. The schedule is set up nicely to offer time for help during the day. Her report card comments read like a novel. The time and effort is exceptional.

My daughter has been a student at St. Catherine's for five years and each year, we love it more and more. She is becoming such a strong and confident young woman. She is truly known, loved, and supported by her teachers. The flexibility and personalization that is made possible in their school environment is incredible. I never realized how much a girl-centered program could help my daughter. She now sees any leadership opportunity as a possibility. The experts and speakers they get are incredible. In the last two weeks, she has met with an ambassador from the Gambia in Africa and a woman who was featured in the book, "Hidden Figures."

It comes down to perception vs reality. Reality is the both our children have not excelled - we have a daughter at Saint Catherine's, and our son attends Saint Christopher's. The reputation of the privileged princess certainly applies at Saint Catherine's, while the reputation of privileged parents applies at Saint Christopher's. We gave it four years, and now we are looking at other options (Collegiate), but getting both children transferred the same year is going to be very difficult. We regret our decision and hope other alternatives become available before middle school.

My daugher LOVES to go to school - she loves her teacher. I enjoy seeing what she is coming home from school interested in and doing. She is doing things I would never think of encouraging her to do. Thank you St Catherine's!

Sending our daughter to Junior Kindergarten at St. Catherine's has been one of the best decisions we've made. She has matured socially, is more confident and engages more in cooperative play with her friends. This is a huge change from her previous year at preschool. She would sit at the craft table all day long. She was very focused, but didn't socialize much with her friends and wasn't interested in learning academic skills. This year has given her the chance to become a leader, grow, explore, discover and learn, her way, in a safe and nurturing environment. This very special year in JK has allowed her to explore her passions while sneaking in basic math/science/reading skills at the same time. Thanks to incredible teachers and a girl centered environment, she has flourished! She is now reading at a level D and has made a good start toward independent reading. Kindergarten, here she comes! The JK girls will always share a special bond that they carry with them throughout their entire academic life at St. Catherine's. I know it sounds cliche, but I truly believe that this year has been an incredible gift to her in so many ways, and I'm very sad to see it come to an end.

St. Catherine's School has been such a wonderful place to work for the last seven years. As an office staff member, I am able to experience and observe our school on many different levels. From class room visits, professional development opportunities, chapels, working directly with our students and their families, and attending a variety of events, I see the amount of hard work that goes in to creating an incredible school. The parent volunteer opportunities are vast. We have teachers and staff that have stayed here for over forty years which says the world to me. I am constantly amazed at what our students are doing starting in JK. The program is challenging, yet the support that students receive is outstanding. Teachers come early and stay late to help students if they need it. They give individual attention to the girls and their families and work tirelessly to make sure each child is excelling and comfortable. Our entire school, from the Head of School, Board Members, Divisions Directors, Faculty and Staff, is constantly researching and embracing best educational practices through conferences, books, parent and student feedback and more to ensure that we do our best.

Our daughter has been a Lower School student at St. Catherine's for 3 years, and we could not be happier. The school's focus on educating girls, the high caliber of the teachers and staff, and the warm, welcoming community have all made our experience at St. Catherine's a wonderful one. When we moved to Richmond 3 years ago, we looked at many different options - both public and private - and we're thrilled with our choice. Our friends with older daughters at St. Catherine's say great things about the Middle and Upper School experiences as well, so we look forward to many more years at the school.

This is without a question the best investment we have made in our daughters' future. They love learning and each year seem to be more engrossed and interested in their studies. Their exposure to music, art, athletics and community service gives them the advantage of discovering new things about themselves and becoming confident, well-rounded citizens.

My daughter started at St. Catherines with Junior Kindergarten and is now in First Grade. My husband and I have been nothing less then thrilled with her development and progress. The teachers have all taken the time to learn the specific interests of their students and incorporated the specific interests within the lesson plans. I'll admit I was doubting the ability of learning two foreign languages starting in Kindergarten but my daughter is so motivated and interested. She comes home and teaches us! Having a son, I can see first hand how boys and girls learn differently. St. Catherines puts so much thought and research into creating an environment for girls to be their individual best. Currently my daughter is very interested in math and science so the rapidly expanding STEAM initiative and new Science Building is particularly exciting.

My kids have attended public and private in Richmond. At a celebrated public elementary, I found crowded classrooms, behavior issues, and teachers who were forced to 'teach to the test.' Too many students, state requirements, SOLs, etc. left little time for teachers to really know our kids. After 1 year, we made some really tough choices and dramatic lifestyle changes in order to enroll our kids at St. Catherine's & St. Christopher's. I can't begin to describe how happy it has made us. Each child is known and - at the first parent/teacher conference in the Fall, my daughter's teacher talked about my daughter as if she had known her for years, unlike the perfunctory conference at her other school. Kids are exposed to experiences and offerings that aren't possible in public school, including a wide variety of speakers, workshops, field trips, multiple foreign languages, and interactions with students from all divisions. STC gives the time and flexibility for these teachers to know my kids and tailor their teaching to the kids, and drive the learning from what excited the kids - not what the legislators say must be taught. I am incredibly grateful that my daughter is there.

My daughter is in her second year at St. Catherines and is flourishing. We looked at the 3 private schools and we are so glad we selected St. Catherines. We were and still are very impressed with the administration and how present themselves on a daily basis. Our daughter has made many friends and so have my husband and I. I continued to be impressed with the diversity of the students and staff. My second child will be attending next year and we can't wait to watch her grow into a well rounded, self confident member of society.

I am sorry but St. Catherines was not for me. The girls there were disrespectful and completely mean. I of course was not the perfect blonde with a family that made over 1 million dollars a year, so I was not that popular. The teachers were even crazy and quite insane. My sister even had an incident where her friend got pushed into a locker by some of the popular girls, and she was the one that got in trouble, not the popular girls because their parents had payed enough money for her to get ahead in life and not get in trouble. I am sorry but this is true, St. Catherines is a school for girls that just lets girls get ahead in life with money and popularity rather than actually intelligence.

St. Catherine's was the best decision my parents ever made for me. After being on the waiting list for six years, I was extremely resistant to the idea of leaving public school, so they told me if I didn't like it after a year I could leave. After one day at STC there was no turning back! I loved every moment of my four years there and wish I had been able to attend for 13 years. My writing abilities were praised, my math abilities were helped, and my biology teacher made up a song to teach us the human body. I received an invaluable education, had access to passionate teachers and college counselors, played new sports, pursued my love of dance, and made some of the best friends I could ever ask for. STC staff told my class we had the biggest 5-year reunion in over 10 years. St. Catherine's and its traditions will always have a special place in my heart.
