We do not trust the administration at this school. Nor do our kids feel valued as children.

This school ONLY cares about SOL scores. When children need extra help, they dont get it. The 15 kids per teacher is a flat out lie. Try DOUBLING that figure. Just like the rest of GB schools, kids get pushed through to keep ratings high. Its common knowledge that grades magically change once SOLs are passed. The kids arent learning anything beyond how to pass these tests & the DOLs themselves are a joke (if you dont believe me, check the standard error for yourselfa reasonably accurate SE for testing would be 2.4 or 3 TOPS. SOLs are 15!!! That equates to ZERO accuracy). So kids spend their entire school careers learning to take tests that have no accuracy or credibility. If your care about your childs education & plan on them going to college someday, dont send them to Chesapeake schools (especially this one). They learn nothing & then get slammed the second half of high school. I have to wonder what the statistics are for anxiety & depression disorders? Bet theyre mostly school-related. The sad part is that there are some teachers who DO care about these kids but they get blocked by admin (the principal in particular) & are unable to do anything about it. Since my time here I have seen MULTIPLE children be recommended for retention, but administrators just push them through because that is what is expected. Kids that succeed have to spend 2+ hours working & studying AFTER school (after spending over 7 hrs a day AT school) just to make it. That leaves very little time for playing or recreation. GBP is almost misleading because it is such a welcoming & fun school. At this one, you arent even allowed to come to class parties. Parents can go to ONE school event for their child at the end of the year. The principals reasoning is always safety but its really because she doesnt want to deal with parents.
Just ask any homeschool parent in the area (there are A LOT of them) if you want honest answers about what horrible schools GBI, GBMS, & GBHS are.

I don't think so. It is one of those schools that has been railroaded by (No Child Left Behind policy) SOL-driven statistics. The focus is not where it should be for students. This school really needs strong, supportive leadership for learning, not SOL-driven education.

Nope. Keep looking. This district does not want to invest in differential learning. If it requires more $, which extra support and services cost. You can forget it.
They had the vice principle evaluate my kid. He is not trained in school psychology. The district coordinates with some other department to decide whether they agree with various diagnoses from you-pick-it-specialist.

The teachers are good. Some are outstanding. If your child struggles with non-visible learning obstacles, and you want services, good luck.

I believe only education specialists are qualified to answer this question. That is not me.

Our daughter attended two years at Great Bridge Intermediate, after attending one year at Southeastern Elementary. I'm not really sure what the alarm is concerning this school. The teachers, support staff and administration do a phenomenal job! We have no complaints about the quality of education our daughter received.

My daughter will attend three of the three years possible at GBI. HEr first two years in third and fouth grade, she has been in the class designated as high achieving, yet not one day has she had any homework. I fear her academic growth has stalled from the awesome Weston FL and North chevy Chase MD schools where she ws challenged and excelled.

Before moving here we heard really good things about Great Bridge. I have to say that we have been 100% happy with the school. We have been lucky to have a wonderful teacher who is very interested in her students. No complaints here.
