its Okay. Would have been better if the principal would have done her part and had that teacher apologize to my son and to us. But hiding isn't helping the situation. All it takes is an apology. But they're too prideful. Its a shame that my son has to be exposed to that.

Some of the teachers do but not all. If you want respect you need to show respect as well. Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

we were faced with a bad situation where one of their teachers put her hands on my sons face . Don't really want to get into details but when I questioned the principal about this kind of teacher conduct she defended the teacher. There are cameras to outside by the school buses and when we asked to see it for proof of what happened the principal refused to show it to us. She wouldn't even give us the name of the teacher. If she has nothing to hide why would she then refuse to show us the video? It is very disconcerting since I had high regard for the school. It is under further investigation I won't let this slide so easily.

SPED students don't really get that much homework so this one is kind of hard for me to answer. Though the homework they do get is usually studying for a quiz or a test. If there is homework I've seen most of my son's be from his lap top. (That may not be the norm for regular education students)

My son is in Special Education Classes. The SPED teachers are absolutely amazing. The teacher learns how each of their students functions and learns and the teacher adapts to the student so that each child can learn at their speed, the way they understand, to the max of their ability. They are so encouraging and so amazing.
We moved to VA in Sept 2016. My son has been at Hornsby for 2 years. Just started his 3rd. With the amazing teaching staff and the patience they have they have brought him from a kindergarten level to a 4th grade level. Absolutely mind blowing the progress he has made. The effort the teachers put into him. The program this school offers!

Can't speak for the entire school... Because with my son being in the SPED program he's not necessarily involved in every single aspect. Though the staff and programs he is in and has contact with do believe in developing strong characters and believing in themselves and holding their heads up and being proud of who they are. Most defiantly this particular program works on compassion and respect and sharing and understanding others.

Moving here from NC I stopped in to ask about schools in the area for children with special needs like private schools etc. They asked me why didn't I just enroll him there. I couldn't believe here in VA my son could go to a public school and have an equal opportunity at an education. This school has different classrooms designed for different levels of needs. So they are absolutely excepting with arms wide open of children with any exceptional needs. And.... They have bus transportation for our children to get to and from school!!!!

Any instances that we have encountered the school has been right on top of.
My son has come home and told me he had been called to the principles offices because he whiteness bullying happening and or tried to stop it.
*** So yes BULLYING DOES HAPPEN, but the school is on top of it as soon as it happens. *** Rather it's at school or on the bus ***

I would rate our experience like a 15 out of 10. Because we are absolutely amazed by Hornsby Middle School, By James City County Schools!!!

I have two children in this school and am very pleased. The teachers are generally excellent, and the guidance counseling staff is truly exceptional. Many parents volunteer at PTA-led activities, and the school benefits from that. This school is small enough that I feel the faculty and staff know my children well, and they are not just lost in a crowd.

We have had great experiences at Hornsby Middle School. My child has had challenging classes and been well prepared for high school. The school keeps us well informed through both emails and Parent Vue. Teachers and the staff are happy to help.

Teachers have their favorites and cause problems for the kids they don't like. The principal and vice principal don't seem to be any better.

This school is full of teachers and staff that seem to be on a power trip. They will look for any reason to send a child to detention, ISS or give them a referral to the principal. And the communication between students or parents and their staff is mediocre at best. If you have other options, take them.

Hornsby has it all. Compassionate, challenging teachers who go the extra mile; great leadership that emphasizes making a difference to each student; involved parents who try and make things just a bit more for everyone; amazing counselors who are always willing to listen and help; and a friendly and welcoming staff all on a beautiful campus. Hornsby offers great after school activities: arts, sports, leadership. Their classes strive to prepare the students for High School and life in general. Communication tools are very effective. In short...It's 5 stars. Thank you Hornsby! Keep up the good work.
