Abingdon Elementary School

There are too many “teachers” including the principal that tear down our children. My children loved school until coming here. They do not allow staff to have open communication with parents. They allow teachers to YELL at children. Not just raising voices for attention but yell on aggression! Their lunch time seems more like they’re all incarcerated instead of elementary lunch. This is to include kindergarten first and second grade. I’m looking forward to changing school districts and so are my kids.

There were absolutely no opportunities for me to capture memories of my child's first year of school. There was no play and parents are banned from field day. I have one picture of my child and the teacher on orientation day before school even started.

My child was refused the opportunity for the preschool program because he was evaluated at 27% delayed and the requirement is they be 30% delayed. Problem is the evaluation is scored by the teachers opinion of the percentage of delay.

Thankfully my child was not bullied! However, my neighbors' child was bullied and pushed to the ground during recess. No one called her parents. When she got home her clothes were ripped and her knees were bleeding. When they called the school, they were told the situation was being handled and the school could not discuss it with them.

Horrible. The parents are not welcome at this school. There are no extra events planned for the students to participate in where the parents are welcome to come witness their children's development. After kindergarten, my child hates school. This is unacceptable. If there is only one grade that should encourage a love of learning it should be kindergarten.

My child (kindergarten) was not assigned homework at all for the first half of the school year. Then all of a sudden homework was sent home that required over an hour. Homework should begin right away if it is going to be required for kindergarteners, and things should be gradually added to get them used to having to do homework. It was very difficult to get a 5 year old who has never had to do homework to sit for an hour and get it done.

We have been a part of Abingdon Elementary for over 5 years and we absolutely love the school and staff, the only complaints that my kids have every year is the cafeteria staff is very unfriendly and not nice at all, and let me add none of my kids have ever been in any trouble at all or ever been an issue for any staff member at the school, I just think the cafeteria staff needs to treat the kids better!! I have even seen how mean they are with my own eyes!! Other than that great school!!

This school has a total lack of communicaton im am ready to out my child out and home school him thank goodness hes in fifth grade this year abd its the last year ill have to deal with this mess

My grandson has been going to this school since kindergarten. He is now entering second grade. He looks forward to school every day and comes home in a happy mood. He does well in school and his teachers, as well as others who we have interacted with, and do so on a regular basis, are all friendly and positive individuals. This is a fine school. I have a PhD from the Ivy League, and went to New England Private School for most of my younger school education. My wife is also a college grad. A good school for kids to get a solid foundation in education and life, as is the community.

We moved to Gloucester last year and our son started at Abingdon at the end of the year in the hopes to meet a few local kids before Summer. That was the toughest month and a half we ever had. My husband and I shrugged it off to a new environment and took the time to meet with the Principal before starting him the following year and she made us feel immediately at ease. We put him back in and it lasted 2 weeks. The teacher was very mean to him (of course it was the teacher my son was most excited to have) and when I tried to reach the teacher she never called back. To make a very long story short, this school seems to be run like a business. The Principal is too professional and unapproachable for parents or kids. I have yet to hear much of anything positive about the teachers although my son did love the music teacher. There is no gifted program. We are homeschooling until middle school.

My kids were also transferred from TC Walker when it closed. First, I'd like to say that no school in Gloucester can compare to Walker. It was that small town feel where each kids was treated as an individual. Second, it seems as though the ratings for this school went down after it became overcrowded. However, that's not the school's fault, it's the school board's fault. And oh is our school board faulty! I think Abingdon is too "by the book" and follows strict guidelines rather than doing what is best for the students. Maybe it's what our society has brought them to, but I had so-so feel about it from the moment my kids walked through their front doors. I love the principal and most of the teachers, but it's just not the same as TC Walker was. I'm now homeschooling my kids.

My daughter was so excited to start kindergarten. We went to open house and they made us feel safe leaving our daughter in their care. We decided to take her to school once we found out 60 plus kids were on her bus with 3 to a seat. When I went to go pick her up I went to the office and she wasn't there, so I was told her teacher would be bringing her to the office. So I waited and once I saw the teacher she asked if I got my child. I replied no where is she. Long story short they lost my child. She was in the parking lot with no adult crying & looking for me. So I called the school board which was no help. They tried to act like it wasn't a big deal. We asked to transfer to a different school but they said no. So now she's in private school. I will never take my child back to them.

My son was moved here when tc walker closed. From the first week i have not been pleased. He is in 1st grade and has 23 kids in his class. We were assured he would be advanced if school work was too easy. This is not the case. He comes home with the same homework week after week. They teach for testing and not for increased knowledge. We had to beg for increased reading materials as he was bored with books they were giving him. There are no advanced classes. Principal does not follow through on complaints. Teachers are overwhelmed with class sizes. I hope to be moving my son either to a different school in district or private school. The school may be beautiful on the outsde but is overcrowded and mismanged.

My child is in the 5th grade, yesterday I got a call from him at school to let me know that he failed the Geography test. He wasn't the only student that failed, but when he arrived home he was in tears cause the teacher had told the whole class that she doesn't have time to go over the test cause they only have 160 days in the school year. Wow, a teacher that doesn't have time. Apparently she is not the only one that has said this to her students. This is an adult matter that needs to be addressed to the people that changed the days from 180 to 160, not the students. Is this really what we want for teachers? Not impressed and very disgusted!!!!!!!
