QMS is very welcoming and other teachers here care so much about their students. The reviews here make it sound like a bad place, but I completely disagree. The population at this school is so diverse and there is a place for everyone. Every school has its issues, but I feel like QMS handles them well.

My experience at Quioccasin Middle School has been horrible.
Within the first three days, I was already involved in drama, and for something incredibly dumb. That set the tone for the rest of the school year. The environment didn’t feel supportive or safe, and it was hard to focus with all the unnecessary negativity around me.

On top of that, some of the teachers didn’t seem to care about how overwhelmed students were feeling. Instead of offering help or encouragement, they added pressure and made things even more stressful. It felt like I was expected to just deal with everything on my own.

I wouldn’t recommend this school if you’re looking for a positive, respectful, or supportive environment. I honestly hope it gets better for future students, but my experience was nothing but frustrating and draining.

Please stay far away from this school. Bulling is horrible and nothing is done by Admin. Classes are very overcrowded and too many students with IEPs are in one class to be fully and best meet thier needs. Admin is horrible (with exception) of Mrs. Lawson and Mr. Stevens. They make empty promises that are never followed through. Only four windows in the school and it is build like a prison! It is anxiety inducing. Teachers are amazing, esp history and ex ed departments. Mr. Newby is the best!

I was at a tennis match at my school and I grabbed a chip bag from a snack box and my coach. He said that is your third bag and you are still skinny.I mean I wouldn’t call it body shaming but he still called me skin and I can eat whatever I want. I think this school is pretty mid like there is fights and all but some teachers are really nice when you are in 6th grade idk what it is like in 7th and 8th but it is pretty f ing nice to be free in the halls and making new friends at a new school.

This school doesn't do a good job at making sure it's students feel safe.

I have been called slurs at this school, even while being right in front of an authority figure while it happened. I have been sexually assaulted, mocked, laughed at, so on. I don't feel safe walking the halls alone to go to the bathroom at times. Some of the teachers are nice, sure, but that's the only real redeeming quality.

This school honestly sucks Ive seen so many fights and were only a few months into the school year. People are constant trying to start fights and calling others mean names and curse words. There is people who constantly vape in the school bathrooms who only get a light punishment. The school barely tries to prevent fights. this school sucks

If you are a substitute do NOT come here. The students are rude, rowdy and disrespectful, and admin/teachers have little control over any of them.

I've been subbing for about a year and never in my life have I dealt with such disrespect. By last block I was ready to walk out and leave them without a substitute.

Trust me, you do not get paid enough to deal with what you will have to put up with here.

There appear to be very few consequences for students who disrupt class, and whatever consequences are in place do not effectively curb behaviors.

As an alumni of Byrd middle school I was so excited for my children to go there. I have 2 children currently at Byrd. I have been impressed since day 1. Caring teachers and staff & PTA are just a few things that make the school great. It isn't the newest facility but the building is well maintained. The new principal is great. We receive weekly if not more communication about what is going on in and out of the class rooms. Teachers have been responsive and helpful and my children know what is expected of them.

We have two students at Byrd Middle School in Henrico County; 6th and 8th graders. The faculty, staff and teachers are wonderful. This school may not be one of the brand new facilities in the County but it is full of genuine people who care about the students and their families. Go Senators!

Attended this school in the early 80"s played football for Coach Sheridan it was a good school back then.

I attended this school from 2010-2013. Administrators did nothing when I was being bullied in 6th grade and then in 8th grade they still did nothing when a teacher told me I sickened him. If your kid is like everyone else in the world then they should be fine but if your child enjoys being different and unique then I'd find another school for your child. Great art department!

This school is really stupid and I hated every moment of it. I graduated from Byrd last year and I have never been more glad to get out of a school. 7+ students were found with electronic cigarettes (hookah pens) and the administrators did nothing about it. Only one kid got 2 days of in school detention when there is supposed to be a zero tolerance drug policy. To sum it up, terrible school

Posted: September 4, 2014

My school sucks. The food is like poison and there is sex and people always do drugs. THERE WAS A DUDE WHO GOT BLOWN IN THE HALLWAY AND THE ADMINISTRATORS DID NOTHING. There's always violence and I've seen like 20 fights at least. Better to go to Pocohantas Middle with all the white kids.

This is my school and it's way better than most schools, because we have 3 gyms. We also have 2 cafeterias. You have many choices for extra curricular activities. Like french, Spanish, teen living, drama, technology, computers, chorus, & band. Look at all these options most schools don't have this and this is an awesome school. They have the nicest staff and we actually have fun at school. Were not just one how says you have to do this you have to do that. So this is a awesome school!

This is a school that takes their rules a bit light. In the three years I've been here, all of the students I've come across seem to just not care anymore. Teachers seem to only appreciate some of their class members, and they don't interact with the students who aren't "popular". Whenever I go through our halls, I am forced to push through crowds of students who refuse to move ,only to be called rude words by people who feel they are allowed to do so. It's a very negative environment, and I feel that the choices of what we can do are too limited.

I am a student going into my 3rd year at Byrd and since the time I arrived in my first year, the school has gone down a very steep hill. It was bad enough not having windows but now the principal has taken the curriculum and is wringing out every single drop of fun there ever was. I believe that this method of managing the school is inappropriate because we are children and we have a hard time paying attention to something if it's boring. There are some very amazing teachers in this school but I would like to see more interesting/interactive ways of teaching in the school from other teachers because that would actually help the test scores a lot. Overall, I do not recommend this school unless you are immune to or do not mind -Bullying -Stupidity or -Talk of drugs/sex/violence among peers That is all.

I Graduated from Byrd Middle School in 2012 and did not enjoy it at all. The Teachers and staff would not care whether you had a problem in a subject you are pretty much left to figure it out on your own. The Teachers are not workable in this school with grades and are often irritated when you ask them for help. The bullying in this school is really bad and administration does not do anything about it. I saw a classmate being bullied and a teacher walked by him and just look at him and said nothing. There was stealing in the locker room and the person never found their belongings. The teachers in most of my classes were often aggravated with bullying and spend most of the class telling that person to calm down. The only thing I did enjoy was finally getting on the bus to go home. I could give this school Zero stars if I could. It is overall a bad learning environment for children.

This is my 3rd year at byrd. I have two good things to say and MANY bad things. 1) The 6th grade teachers are amazing! They will do anything and everything to help your child succeed, 2) The Library, we have the best library in the state. Now for the bad things there is MAJOR BULLYING, FIGHTS, AND THINGS YOU WOULD NEVER IMAGINE. The administration, is not the best. Once you get to 7th and 8th grade the teachers could care less they just want the day to be done with. Byrd has been the worst experince that I HAVE EVER HAD! As a result; I'm transfering schools during my last year at byrd because i cant stand it anymore. My little sister is coming to byrd next year, and you want to know something? I'm literally begging my parents to not allow my sister to come to Byrd. That is how bad it is! With my experince if your only staying for the 6th grade come on over you'll love it! Other than that i would stay away!

Apparently, their phones don't work. I am a parent of a student at Byrd and they have neglected to call me about my child's bullying problem. It's been one week and they can't make the headway to make one phone call. I am now going to contact the county's board of education to file a formal complaint about this matter. If they can't solve this matter in a proper fashion then I will see what the police will think of this matter.
