Would not recommend this dump. Looks like a prison when you walk in and the pupils are left unattended and act like animals. Teachers dont care about their classes, maybe theres a few that do. Drugs are running rampant through this school and the staff does absolutely nothing. The pupils are selling drugs on premises. Staff knows this amd does nothing. Kids are doing drugs in the bathroom between classes. We had to pull our son out of this burning trash pit. Thankfully we were moving so we didnt have to enroll him in another Henrico school.

Im a senior this year and ive been going to Varina my full 4 years. This school is terrible. First of all this year they decided to lock all the bathrooms and youre only allowed to go during very specific times and occasions which is ridiculous. The teachers and especially the administrators here pick and choose who they want to actually punish and discipline for bad behavior or for breaking the rules. They always threaten us about what theyll do when they see bad behavior but they never actually do anything. The food here is absolutely horrendous and bad quality, they recently brought a vending machine but its literally constantly out of order 4 days out of the week and just steals our money. This school does NOT genuinely care about their students like they claim to. All they do is threaten all of us with fifty thousand rules we have to follow and then only pick a select few of students they want to punish for not following them. Most of the teachers and staff dont even look like they want to be here half the time. Not to mention the students here are just has horrible and theyre never corrected for it. The amount of bullying going on at this school is ridiculous and nobody seems to notice. Students bullying students, students bullying teachers and sometimes even teachers targeting students. I thought I would leave a review to express my frustration and disappointment with this high school since this is my last year. Genuinely hope this school improves in the future but I know it probably wont. Dont expect me to ever send my kids here.

The new principal, Darin A. Thompson, Ed.S., is setting staff up for failure with unrealistic goals and only offering empty platitudes rather than actual support and resources to help them achieve these unrealistic goals of his.

The administration tries very hard to create a safe environment despite all the bad press this school regularly receives. The principal Mrs. Seely herself tries to keep the school together under all the craziness.

This school excels greatly with its programs concerning special needs. They have a building dedicated to it and extracurricular programs for them that help give them the ability to experience more day to day wise.

Unfortunately, there is just not much modern schools can do about bullying today. Varina tries to with it's administration and hard working counselors, but it just doesn't seem to make a difference.

Overall, Varina tends to have a few teachers that may be ineffective. However, the majority of teachers I have come to know are caring and easy to talk to about school things.

While this school has a period once a week that is dedicated to "Advisory" class, it is ineffective in my opinion because the teachers administering it do not show care all too well with the material.

I love this school and the history surrounding it. However, fights are common due to the low parental support that Varinas parents give. The parents here do not support very many programs outside of football and the PTSA program is noticeably small. With that said, Varina is actually a good face value school with all the programs it offers as long as you take advantage of them.

The teachers here make sure you are held accountable for your homework, but also make sure you can repent every now and then.

A wonderful school that has overcome many challenges! They strive to teach, encourage, and help the students achieve their goals. I know VHS used to have a not so great reputation, but they have worked hard to become one of the best schools in the area.

The school has numerous initiatives to develop integrity, compassion, and respect in its students. For example, there is an Advisory period where topics such as bullying and kindness are discussed. However, the school can only do so much. A great deal of developing character falls on the students' parents and guardians.

There are a number of highly qualified teachers at this school. They differentiate their instruction based on student data and offer various support systems. Of course, not every teacher is perfect, but overall, the staff at VHS demonstrates effectiveness.

Every high school has its issues. Varina has people who work in the school who work tirelessly to try to solve said issues. When we look at the improvements that have been made in test scores (which are not the end-all, be-all), we see that students, teachers, and administrators have labored to tackle tests that increased dramatically in rigor and, quite frankly, trickery. Take a look at the phenomenal marching band or the Key Club members who do hours of community service or the NJROTC program. If you look for the bad in a school, you will surely find it. If you are more objective, you will see that Varina is a great place to teach and learn.

They care about the kids and the administration and staff does above and beyond to keep the kids in order and safe.

Varina needs to start firing teachers that aren't doing their job like they're supposed to. I would give Varina an F in the Chemistry departement. If ya'll just take out the time to look at the Chemistry grades this year, ya'll would totally be shocked, im not the only one whos failing this class, pretty much everybody in all the teacher classes. im very disappointed by this. Why is Varina High School the only high school in Henrico who cant let students switch out classes and switch teachers? Why cant varina switch late like the schools? I cant afford for my gpa to drop my junior year!!! I went from an 3.14 to a 2.9, that's considered bad for me, because i want to either attend George Mason or VCU to to study medicine and pharmacy. im not used to making grades like this!!! >:(

this school is like home. it may seem a little nerve wrecking at first but you will not make friends like the people here, anywhere else. some of the teachers are hard on you, but I learned so much. for example mrs. greene was crazy, but she taught geometry the best. I love everybody there. everybody is family and I will miss that place while I am gone for a little bit. no school will ever top varina. #varinanation #bluedevilsforlife
