This school is ok as an 8th grader Ive never seen any bullying or racism. The teachers provide fun lessons but its just underfunded and doesnt have good math teachers. The Band teacher is super good she teaches everything you need to now. She is super funny and enjoyable. The PE program is good

Concerns Regarding Key peninsula middle school

Racism and Bullying
A student who was at the school for only a few months experienced ongoing bullying, reportedly due to racial reasons. Despite repeated incidents, the school took no meaningful action, ultimately forcing the student to leave and return home.

Teacher Concerns and Lack of Response
I have received over 50 emails from teachers expressing complaints about various issues. I reached out to the school counselor to schedule a meeting to address these concerns, but have received no response.

Lack of Safety
There appears to be no effective safety measures in place. Students and staff do not feel protected or supported, and safety concerns are repeatedly ignored.

Family Engagement
Families do not feel welcomed or involved. Many are discouraged from participating after hearing about teachers yelling at students for simply getting water or asking for a pencil.

Academic Environment
The learning structure is minimal and disengaging. Students are often required to watch several videos per day, take notes, and then discard them with little to no meaningful instruction or feedback.

Special Education Mistreatment
There have been deeply troubling observations of special education students being handled inappropriately, including instances where teachers have physically grabbed or yanked students by the arm. This is unacceptable and potentially abusive.

Social-Emotional Support
While the school distributes pamphlets about suicide and drug prevention, there is little genuine support. Students who seek help from the counseling office are often bullied or mocked by others, further discouraging them from accessing mental health resources.

this school dress coded me even though other people were wearing the same thing or even thinner clothes. teachers don't respect me or any other people that aren't part of or supporting the LGBTQ community and I have been discriminated against so many times. I don't recommend this school at all I would recommend home school or something where your child might actually learn. thank you for your time.

As others have stated, KPMS is not the best school. PSD Superintendent blames the bullying issue on the fact that most students come from low income families. I have worked with the low income population and I can confirm that they are some of the most honest and hard working people in our society. Falling in the poverty level doesnt mean your children are bullies. Children do lead by example and so far I have counted 3 great teachers among a plethora of unethical teachers. I can see that the issues at this school start at the top and these kids deserve better leadership. I am genuinely concerned for my childs safety and emotional wellbeing everyday they attend this school.

not a great school it has some of the best teachers ever but the office workers suck constant criminalization of students all ways vice principal is way too eager to punish students it is depressing and none of the office workers or the administrators are the type of people to change that hopeful the remodel should help.

KPMS is not a good school. They dont handle bullying well or they just ignore it and a large quantity of teachers are violent and/or display inappropriate behavior while working. Dont go there.

I will tell you--- just because a school is "poorer" doesn't mean that kids aren't getting a top notch education. I would choose KPMS over any other middle school in the district and that's a fact. Are they perfect? No-- there is always room for improvement. But I know that when kids go there, teachers will really care and will work hard to help the kids learn, not just with reading and math but with other things that matter like dealing with conflict and such.

While there is homework at times, the teachers at this school get that middle school kids need more time to complete the work they were given during the school day. Kids have busy lives these days!!

There are always a couple of teachers at any school that need to move on. Overall though, this school has teachers who really work hard to help kids. My child was well looked after and his teachers bent over backwards to help him be successful, even when he was being a challenge.

Kids these days really struggle with learning how to treat each other right. Maybe it was that way when we were kids too but it seems like it is worse these days. I really like how the school has their 3 rules Respectful Responsible Safe--- my kid says they have a saying on the intercom every morning about this and kids are given rewards and recognition for meeting those rules. I liked it so much I started using these same 3 rules at my house.

I can't say I always understand the decisions that have to be made inside schools these days. Gosh knows I wouldn't want to do it! I was so worried about my child going into middle school and the principals there really helped me understand what to expect. They smiled and laughed a lot with the kids and whenever I had questions, they answered them. My kid needed extra math and reading support, and he got them. He also had fun things to do after school like art club. Once we came as a family and learned how to paint a snowman. It was fun!

I think so? I know that my kiddo had some challenges and he got what he needed. I couldn't say how it is for other families. Can only speak from my experience.

That's hard to say. I know that the principals really try--- it's a tough age though. America struggles with bullying everywhere and I am not sure anyone really knows how to stop it. But I know that they teach the kids about it and what to do if it happens to them. And their principals take it seriously.

Teachers are fantastic but the administration needs to get a clue. Kids are made to sit down at all times during lunch breaks and are constantly criminalized. Bullying has become a huge problem. There is no getting away from the rural atmosphere but the school needs serious remodeling and the school district levies continue to fail. Great programs exist for above average students (NASA). Sports programs fail horribly in comparison with Gig Harbor schools. Bottom line, if your child needs guidance and support, be prepared to give it yourself. It won't be coming from the school.

I am very pleased with this school. My daughter has attended during 6th and 7th grades. I have found the administration to be helpful, welcoming, friendly and committed. The teachers are long-term, educated, and seem sincere in their efforts to instruct in the most up-to-date manner; with regard for varied learning styles among students. We moved here from another school district after her 5th grade year and the differences were impossible to ignore. Her grades and social life are far improved. My only criticism is that the communication system, with regard to attendance, among the office staff could stand improvement. Everything else is fantastic.

My daughter has gone to this school for 2 years now. She enjoys the robotics and photography classes. Staff and principal are very hand-on and approachable. I would not hesitate to send another child here.
