Being a military family, we have moved a lot and finding a good school in a military town is very difficult. During our time at JBLM, we started in Olympia, which wasn't the right fit. We moved to the base and we were assigned Thomas through Clover Park SD, which was also not the right fit. We were fortunate enough to get approved for a out-of-district transfer for Pioneer and my kid loves it. There has not been an issue with safety or bullying, my child has been challenged academically and has great teachers, and the athletic program offers a lot. Preparing for our next move and having a difficult time finding another gem like Pioneer.

If you have a daughter- this is not the school for them. Girls are forced to deal with grunting, moaning, and obscene gestures by their boy classmates.
Multiple boys touching girls without their permission. Harassing girls for sex on the school grounds. Administration does not act.

I started school 12 days ago but so much has happened...Ive gone to this school for 7th and 8th grade. the actual school is great, good classes (spanish, leadership, art, ceramics, GTT, yearbook, and teachers aide) but the teachers are what need to be talked about. Ok so theres a few that should not be at the school but im only going to talk about 2. This 7th grade social studies teacher is a mess. One time in her 6th period when i was in that class she had a mental breakdown infront of the kids. she went on and on about how nobody likes her in this school and that she is so hated on, etc. she really just made the whole 7th grade environment horrible. Another teacher is a 8th grade math teacher. nothing is wrong with the way he teaches it just the things he does. so ive been in his class for 12 days but had heard about him in my 7th grade year. (btw im a girl) so i wear lower cut shirts one in a while because i can. and for today for example i wore one. he was talking to the class and we made awkward eye contact. but as we kept doing awkward i could notice him looking down my shirt with the low cut. This has happened numerous times with him. it also happened last year with the other 8th graders. overall its a good school but please somebody change the staff.

This is my second year at Pioneer and during my first year the only main problem was this kid who constantly made fun of my best friend.But that was taken care of before the end of the year.We had a few problems with stupid Tik-tok dares but otherwise its a really nice school and I look forward to the next 2 years there.

Very happy with the staff and experience we've received as a military family with a son with an IEP and diagnosis of severe anxiety -- I was concerned about his transitioning from homeschool and into the new school and after researching public and private options near the base, settled on DuPont and decided to try Pioneer, with the expectation that we'd pull him back to homeschool if he had any problems. Instead, he made friends quickly and his grades and confidence soared because of the support from wonderful teachers and coaching staff. The teachers are EXCELLENT and my student was truly excited about learning. I cannot say enough great things about the academic program, athletics department, faculty, special ed, nursing, facilities, and overall support I felt as a parent. My only complaint is how shut down everything was this last year "due to covid" - not docking any stars since that's out of the school's control, but it's very obvious that it directly caused this uptick of the behavior issues in the school, and that was a huge problem everyday for students affecting their mental health and ability to focus and feel safe. Students should be able to cheer their friends on at games, go on a field trip, or have a dance--and they desperately need more time to socialize so they don't disrupt so much during classtime or turning to cyber bullying. I realize this is a nation-wide issue though. I just am surprised that the school blames covid, and not owning their own part of shutting everything down. They should be highly invested in opening back up for the health and well-being of students. Instead, they provided access to a counseling app. :/ The kids don't need counseling. They just need to be able to socialize again.

This school does NOTHING to stop bullying of innocent students and cultural diversity of student body and teachers is essentially non existent. We have had to pay for a private school even though I pay taxes to the public school district SHSD.

Our son is on his final semester of his 8th grade year at Pioneer, and we are so happy with how he has grown over these three school years. As a young student with autism, he has struggled in school over the years. The support from the staff is amazing though. The amount of education and skill that his EIP support team has amazes me. Beyond that, the general education he has received has been consistent and solid. His self reported happiness has been mirrored by improving test scores and grades year over year.

I would like to point out especially the teachers and faculty involved in extra-curricular activities. Pioneer has a range of ways they help keep our kids engaged. For examples, there are homework club, game clubs, traditional athletics and drama programs. One of the most wonderful experiences we had was during the pre-COVID days, his 7th grade football program. We where nervous about sending him out onto the field, but with the committed coaches it was a wonderful growth opportunity for him. They held him to the same standards for excellence that they expected of all the players, and they also recognized where his needs where at. They taught the student athletes to support each other and be a real team. It made the game time my son had on the field really meaningful, because he knows he had to earn it with work and grit.

I truly wish that every community has schools like we do, and I wish every middle school could be as wonderful as Pioneer. The young adult I have getting to the end of this schools journey is so wonderfully grown when I think about the child that started there. I know from seeing up close these last three years that every student coming through gets this same generous level of care.

Pioneer middle school is another great school in the Steilacoom school district. The teachers an staff here go above and beyond. My son has autism and the staff and teachers work with him and us to make his school year and day successful. He also plays football at pioneer. His team and coaches were very accepting of him and his needs.

Great school with good educational focus with sports. Great teachers and sports coach. Perfect school and city to live and raise kids between Bellevue to Olympia. Military families also bring lot of diversity in school. Great Math and language teacher.

Awesome school! I just finished the 8th grade at Pioneer. I had mostly upstairs teachers. They were challenging and really seemed like they cared about me and the other students. Mr. Beaulieu was the best!!!

I felt as though the teachers were more concerned about kids getting the right answer compared to really comprehending the material. My son liked the school and made friends easily.

We have had such a great experience at Pioneer MS! Mr. Stout, the current principal, has been exemplary. He has been instrumental in making Pioneer a top school in the area. Since being hired, he has raised the bar in so many ways, encouraging and inspiring the students to reach their full potential. My 3 children have loved their teachers at Pioneer. Each have had different interests and talents; each had teachers that inspired and challenged them. From Project Lead the Way (a computer engineering course) to Choir, from Creative Writing to advanced Mathematics...and everything else in between...my children became better people and students because of their talented and amazing teachers! Team coaches have been excellent as well! Things added to Pioneer: Spanish, Algebra I and Geometry are offered to students who test into it, sports for 6th graders, and a Football program returning this coming year. The office staff and counselors have been top-notch also. We are moving overseas this next year and they went the extra mile in compiling documents and proctoring assessment tests for admission requirements, always so helpful and friendly no matter the inconvenience.

I have been very impressed with the school. The leadership here is outstanding and the principals have excellent discipline and reward policies. They always make my children feel more then welcomed, knowing them by name. The staff is constantly revising and rethinking what they are doing to best fit the students. At this school I know my children are safe, getting a great education and are surrounded by adults who sincerely care for them.

Pros:They have a 100% club for students who turn in their homework for the whole quarter.No more Wednesday academy. They have sports for 7-8 graders such as baseball,soccer,volleyball,basketball etc. They have after school activities for everyone including builders club,woodshop,robotics,GSA etc They also have study hall. Fitness is the best subject there is you can actually do stuff instead just sitting there. They have help for special ed students and speech therapy students. They also have help for reading and math. There's also band and choir. Cons:There's no gifted program. Lockers are small. Some teachers are rude for some apparent reason. But over that pioneer is a great school. So I would recommend this school to you!

My child has been at this school for 7th and 8th grade, they offer many extras such as Builders club which is Key Club at the middle school level, sports, (wrestling, basketball, track, etc) wood shop, chior, band, yearbook to name a few. My son was challenged in his 7th and now 8th grade year with projects, papers and difficult assignments. There is a skyward system which allows you to check all of your childrens grades and even what they have bought for lunch. When I have needed to communicate to his teachers I have gotten a response within 24 hrs. The school has several events to include a monster bash, bingo night and other dance/open gym nights. I volunteered within the school for a year and I think the school is great! The principal was changed last year and there are several new teachers this year as well. Love Pioneer!
