Now looking back at my school years they were morbidly messed up I had made a comment in the 9th grade about shooting myself under my breath and someone told their parent I was planning a school shooting and I felt forced to agree with what they said due to the principal being quite aggressive about it, I attempted twice during my years there and it wasnt even acknowledged that I did have a learning disability(adhd) and the worst part is that I cant even single out this school as a problem when its everywhere. Also your teachers made bomb and gun jokes and I sure as hell did after I was accused for suicidal thoughts

So far we've had 3 teens in this school, our oldest did the International Baccalaureate full program and loved it. My soon to be grad, has been ultra involved with theater and despite being a full time Running Start student, Sumner was home base. My 3rd isn't much for the school spirit culture but has gotten the help and placements he's needed. Our youngest will start there in the fall and he's very much looking forward to it. I'm very happy we found such a great community.

We had all great teachers with great support systems

These qualities are very much practiced in this school district

Staff and many student clubs revolve around leadership

My child has learning differences and the only thing that could be better is a higher staff to student ratio. Otherwise it was great

We have never dealt with bullying at this school

Great school. My child was able to go to college and get her CNA at 16 so its a win for us.

I am really surprised at such a low rating! Sumner offers a lot of courses and teachers are always willing to help.

This is an excellent school district and school. All schools have ample room for improvement.

Relevance, timeliness, and rigor are important. Would advise better coordination of exam dates so as to more effectively gather achievement results.
Posted: June 7, 2017
Availability, rapport, positive interactions, are all present with my students in their classes.

Would encourage consistent effort from administration to be wary of student social stratification, or, social classes based on perceived monetary appearances, a ademic placements, etc.

Sumner High School is amazing school! I would recommend this school over Bonney Lake. The only thing that makes it not great is, how over crowded it is. WAY to many students. I would have to sit on the ground at lunch because there was no tables to sit at. Almost all of the teachers are amazing at Sumner. I have noticed some of my teacher's forgetting about some of the students because the classes are WAY to full. I remember at one point, my math class almost had 40 students in it because they had no idea where to put students. The counselors at this school is also very good!! I love them all! Many of the students are very kind! One good thing about Sumner is they're strongly against bullying!

Great school. My kids have thrived here after attending Tacoma Schools for most of their lives. The teachers seem to actually care about their students and most of them live in the community.

The sense of community at SHS is unlike any other. Visit the school, drive by in the morning, around 7, and I promise you, you will see students outside holding the door for their classmates, greeting them with smiles. Students of all types! Jocks, cheerleaders, ASB kids, band kids, get to school early just to hold the door for their classmates. Go to a football game, stay after, and I promise you will see students picking up the stands for the custodians, in fact, the cheerleaders are the ones who initiate it with trash bags and gloves. Go to the Annual Community Dinner, observe the 300+ students coming together to serve the 800+ community members a free holiday meal. Go to Pack The Gym, watch the 800+ students on their feet cheering on our Special Olympics Basketball team, high-fiving them, even getting their autograph after the game. SHS radiates love, it's the perfect environment to learn and grow. SHS is so good at what they do they even host 3 separate conferences, an elementary, a middle, and a HS level Servant Leadership Conference, where SHS students teach students from 20+ other schools how to build community in their school. I'm so grateful I got to go to SHS.

I went through a HUGE change in High School, when I was a Junior, and Loved my time at SHS, I would recommend this school to anyone. I recommend the Leadership program, Band Program, and Film program, unlike many schools SHS supports all their programs and makes every student feel welcome. You'll always have your problems at any school, but if you can get passed some of petty little things, Sumner is an amazing school. completely recommended.
