This school will cater towards the bottom 10% of students and does not prioritize student learning. The principal is ineffective at providing consequences to students who are causing extreme disturbances in the classroom, often rewarding bad behavior. The Special Ed resources for students are extremely ineffective, they would rather exit a student from the program than provide the resources that will enable students to be successful. Some of the teachers are absolutely atrocious without any repercussions.

I dearly loved my families and students at this school, however, the toxic culture of the school itself was deeply disturbing. Thankfully, of all of the schools I have taught at I have to say this experience is not the norm.

The only reason that I marked "disagree" rather than "strongly disagree" here is because there are some truly wonderful teachers at this school working hard to do great things for their students. Unfortunately, there are several teachers and other staff members that truly should not be working with or around children. Period.
As a former employee of the school I witnessed staff members getting into explicit verbal altercations in front of students and staff (two paras actually threw up their arms while screaming at each other in front of my students), frequent use of foul language and discussing inappropriate topics in front of students, verbally degrading and humiliating students in front of their peers, and making fun of students with disabilities to other staff members.

As stated above, when students are subjected to daily observations of staff members yelling at and threatening each other there is little hope that it will inspire positive character within the student body.

In the past it has been my experience that leadership at this school has been completely ineffective, though I heard that new administration was put in place as of the 2020 school year.
During my time at the school bullying was a huge issue among students and little was ever done to rectify the situation which compounded the problem. Room clears due to student violence were normal occurrences and due to the reactive rather than proactive stance of the principal and vice principal, this was never appropriately addressed and staff were given little to no support to keep their student body safe, but rather told to just "deal with it."

I am a little worried about the change over in 2019...a lot of teachers seemed to have left. My child has had a few wonderful teachers here and one who was physically and mentally absent the entire year. I will say that the one constant has been the specialist teachers here: Library, Music, PE and Technology - and they are happily wonderful and consistent for children here.

Leadership recently changed and has a lot to prove, and so far... the verdict is definitely out at our home. When the pandemic hit we received very little direction and information. In our experience, teachers didn't seem to know what they could or couldn't do. The principal at the time didn't seem present and the assistant principal was only part time and it didn't feel like she ever did much to problem solve questions that came up.

In the past, our child's IEP auto-filled that we didn't need transportation and shouldn't that be asked/offered? We have always felt like we needed to know our child's rights here, unfortunately. Like not just the book we were given, but really know what should be happening in order to move things forward with most leadership interactions and learning deficits for our child. On the upside, in our experience the counselor has been nothing but positive and forthright with things and she seems like a genuinely kind person.

It's been a very discouraging experience with public education We chose public ed because we felt it was important to support it for all people. Luckily, our experience at the Middle school has been better so we will stay in district for now.

My children were both, in separate years given mimeographed workshhets referencing the USSR. The primary teaching method is worksheets. There are not many evidence based teaching methods that I have witnessed. Worksheets and more worksheets.

My sons teacher told him several times that he ass "too emotional" at 9yrs old. When I asked for clarification it seemed she did not like him expressing to her when he was frustrated, sad.

We are a military family and have moved all over the US. I can say with all honesty that Tumwater Hill is the best Elementary School that we've been at. My kids have thrived there and have been truely encouraged by the teachers and the staff. It feels like home and I always feel welcome. On several occassions my childrens teachers have attended out of school performances and sporting events to cheer on my children. They go over and above to make my kids feel special.

A few years ago I saw another parent arrested, apparently for disagreeing with management. My friend saw the same thing, different parent, different day. I could understand parental frustration with this place. The kids had it even worse - bullying, too many kids, too few resources, and too little care. Consider homeschool!
