Move on teachers. Work somewhere else. I worked in this school right before the pandemic. I was there for about a month in 2021, and I moved back to Alaska. I thought the kids in Alaska are bad, but I can manage Alaskan kids just fine when compared to Chief Leschi Schools. The principal that I was working for was supposed to have my back and support me during this process but the dude had some poor excuse of comments when observing my class. Students seem to be allowed to smoke and get high, drink and come and go from campus whenever they want with no repercussions.

I thought it was great kid to teacher ratio and that my kids would get more one on one and a better education but not when the teachers simply don't care and are more buddy buddy than teachers.

There is no home work. Never. They have a home room that the students are to do there work in.

The school is a complete joke. They teach the kids that "it's who you know " not what you know that makes you successful in life.

They get rid of the teachers that actually care about the student and keep the ones that are buddies instead of teachers.

They simply don't care for special needs. Kids with a IEP don't get the accommodations that they legally supposed to get.

It's very political. 3 girls jumped one girl. 2 out of the 3 are grand kids of a board member and nothing not even 1 day suspension and the other 2 expelled even the one that got jumped

Working here almost made me quit teaching. I gave my heart and energy to Chief Leschi and in return was told maybe I’ll have a job next year or maybe I won’t. Principals are annoyed with staff, students run the school and get away with abusing each other and staff members. Bullying is a huge issue that never gets dealt with. Everything is last minute and staff is expected to bend over backwards to deal with issues that administration should be dealing with. It was a nightmare that made me sick every morning going to work. It’s sad because the school is full of very caring people who would love to make a difference but their treated like garbage so instead they give up and the students suffer.

Teachers have no support backing them up and are told they'll get fired if they don't let certain Puyallup kids get away with stuff.

They suspend kids for a day or two and kids are back. This is a pattern nothing ever changes.

Absolutely horrible I will not recommend it or working there and most certainly not come back to it. There's no support, I do NOT get the 30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks when I work 8hours a day. Mental health goes when you work here.

We are a small school (graduating class of 2015 was the largest ever---41 students). It just isn't tolerated. Someone's mom or grandma is likely to show up without warning in the main office, if you do, and call you out to the staff. And their mom or grandma most likely is friends with yours. If you don't know that, you're in for a surprise.

As of this year, Chief Leschi Schools is transitioning to PBL (project based learning), rather than just having in in key, traditional Native American classes.

The information in the profile here on GreatSchools is 8 years out of date. The current leadership is a combination of those attempting effective transformational change, and those who hide in their office and won't talk to students or parents (the current principal, as of 2016).

The ones who teach with the students' learning style in mind are exceptionally effective. The ones who expect every student to learn entirely from lecture or textbook based instruction are very ineffective. Native students don't learn well from that way, as they are almost exclusively visual and kinesthic (hands-on) learners. Fortunately, with the implementation of project-based instruction, this should be wholly remedied as knowledge of how to teach this way is now a part of the interview process for incoming staff.

Since 2009, research has proven that homework (rote filling out of paperwork, repeating exactly what they did in class rather than using those skill in broad spectrum applications) tanks test scores. There is no homework at Chief Leschi. Rather, students are taught study skills and do have study and research projects that they bring home with them from time-to-time, which is *the* best preparation for what they will experience in college.

All instruction is, and has been, based in Native American culture. While every tribe is different, the basis of all Native culture is this: We are here to serve the Creator and help others. When everything we do is viewed through this lens, the qualities of honesty, integrity and fairness become an integral part of day-to-day life.

I have had students enrolled at this school for 10 years. While the 2015/2016 school year saw a partial return to boarding school style discipline, the new overhaul of the curriculum and focus to project based instruction should remedy this glitch in what would otherwise be 10 years of few complaints. No school will ever be perfect; we live in an imperfect world. I would not send my kids anywhere else. If you have any Native ancestry, this is the best school for your child--hands down.

Test scores, achievement outcomes, truancy and the dropout rate are all unacceptable. Unfortunately, Native children are being short changed on their education by this school.
