The main teachers are not the issue...they have some great teachers. The other staff is the issue and the district is not great either.

They give homework but do not follow up on it once it is turned in...

I feel they don't look out for the childs best interest. especially with special needs children. They are worried more about what they legally are required to do on paper to check the box.

I have two kids who attend this school. One has special needs and I am always fighting for my child to receive the services he needs ...They have an IEP meeting every year. basically they just run you over at those meetings and try to scale back on speech or providing anything...They are good about covering up what is required by law on the IEP paperwork so they don't get in legal trouble. My advice if you have a child with special needs is to bring a professional advocate with you to these meetings that knows exactly what is required of the district by law for your child and knows their rights and to make notes ahead of time so you don't forget anything.
My child struggles so bad with school and The communication with this school is terrible...I can e-mail or call and be polite and it gets us no where. Also we had trouble with my kid being bullied before... one of the times He was hit in the head with a rock came home with a huge bump on his head and nothing was really done about it and they were really sketchy on the details.
Also my special needs kid is lactose intolerant and they constantly give him snacks or drinks that cause him terrible stomach issues and then they wonder why he is absent sometimes... They also lose important paperwork like shot records I still wonder if my kids personal information is out there somewhere ... I can write a book about my attempts to work with them and it getting no where. I am just glad we are moving soon.

My daughter attends school here and loves it! Her teacher is very enthusiastic and positive. The PTA works very hard to provide many "extras" throughout the year and the staff are very dedicated to seeing the children succeed. My child's teacher is great with communicating anything from upcoming school events to any problems there may be in the classroom. I would gladly have my child continue to go here throughout the rest of elementary school!

14 hours days??????? Are you kidding me, I live close to the school and the earliest I have seen somebody is at 6:30, the school is empty by 3, the last person leaving is the custodian Dolores, nicest lady on building. Some teachers care and are nice, they can't do much with the support provide by distric and principal and her bad reputation. SCHOOL of DYSFUNCTION BEACHWOOD, shame of you for not providing EXTRA services, other than the ones for families with IEP, and this kids are the most abuse by system, left behind and neglected. Children often need extra help and is not provide, classroom size is large, ratio is usually 30:1. Some teachers are overwhelmed because of this and distric don't do anything to solve this matter with at least having one assistant teacher per classroom when is need it. This school is very bad, just stay away if you can, we are now homeschooling our 3 boys and is going wonderful.

Glad that year is over and we are moving this summer, this is by far the worst school my daughter has attended. No real homework, just a few pages sometimes. Many incidents of bullies and no staff wanted to do something about it, is true, bullies are everywhere, the difference if how you manage to get the problem solved, how you get rid of it and in this school nobody seemed to care a bit about it. Classes are not challenging and below average standards nationwide. Principal too much blah blah blah and never bother at all to do new things, to engage with students, etc. One time my daughter went to say hello and she asked to sit down in a very rude manner. No enthusiasm, more like a military regime that doesn't work to attack the problems of bullies, etc. School of recognition only means that is currently meeting standars statewide of reading and math, but we all know this is very easy to alter, please don't fool yourselves!!!!Anyway is not a big deal because it should be of course meeting the standars!!!PTA is mediocre and doesn't innovate in nice educational activities, No good behavior system reward, no field trips! If your are movie to WA try another districtOr just homeschool

This school has been School of Distinction for three years in a row! This school provides many extra services for students and has curriculum night for family members. The teachers are dedicated and hardworking. Many of the teachers work 14 hour days and still take time to meet with family members and discuss student achievement. Bullying happens in every school and Beachwood staff take it very seriously and work with students and family members to resolve issues in a timely and caring fashion.

Bullies! Bullies, bullies! I'm a mom of a special needs child and she has been victim of abuse and principal doesn't help, no solutions! Bullying continues and to the point my daughter doesn't want to go no more to school. Teachers also never hear anything of what happening on classroom and let the kids resolve issues and incident that in my opinion and many others parents it shouldn't be like this,many intolerable situations at this mediocre school. Stay AWAY!!!

Not impressed by the school system in Washington State. The curriculum is does not met everyone's needs. My son has not learned anything in Kindergarten, the teacher moves on with the curriculum without taking in consideration the needs of students who have a different learning styles. Not impressed with the staff. Children are not adequately supervised and teachers are frequently absent.

This school is ok if your child doesn't have learning problems or bullying. My son was diagnosed with ADD and on meds. The teacher beg me to take him off of the meds because it wasn't helping. Next thing I knew they formed a meeting with the bored psychologist, teacher, principal, counselor, etc. All of them suggested that I talk to his doctor (aka med again) but I refused. They offered no other intervention. Only when we moved school did my son received nonpharmaceutical intervention. I also heard other parents complaining that they don't remedy bullying.

Not impressed with the school. My daughter goes to Kindergarten there and so far she hasn't learned anything new. It seems like she learned more in Pre-school/Strong Beginnings and is now going backwards.

My daughter loves going to school here. She is in 2nd grade and loves her teacher. Great homework assignments everyday. Separation for reading levels, which is great. My daughter is good at reading so she doesn't get held behind, she goes to a reading class with kids that are tested to her same level. This school is doing a great job, due to the high demands and new housing going up. They are definitely doing all they can!

This school just received the School of Distinction award- top 5% of schools in Washington for improvement over the last 5 years. This is the 2nd year that Beachwood has earned this award.

Beachwood has been a wonderful school for our two children over the last three years. They work hard to teach at each child's level and help them reach their maximum potential. The teachers have been willing to work with us when we have concerns. The new principal coming in worked with the outgoing principal so there should be consistency. We would not hesitate to have children continue at Beachwood, but both are now in middle school.

My son hass been attending Beachwood for 2 years. We have been to many schools and I can say that I have only meet to Principals that really want and have made a difference in their schools and in their childrens progress. Mr. Zarling is one of them I am not able to express how thankful I am for having the pleasure to have met him he has worked so hard to rise above all else. To give our children the best education and options out there. I am sad to see him leave he is truly one of the best. I also loved the way his staff has worked together as a community they help each other out and help each others students as well. In particuar Ms. Rust she has been such a blessing her and Mrs.Sorgenfri they are a great team all of the staff i wonderful and caring including Mrs. Lorie the Health Nurse she is a beautiful person always smiling and caring for all the kids. Last but not least Mrs. Rebecca are PTA president and Mrs. Sanchez they are great dedicated parents. Thank you beachwood.

Beachwood is a great school. This is our family's 5th elementary school. Of the 5 schools we have been in this is the best. The teachers work hard to make sure my son and daughter get what they need and push my son to learn more. The teachers, counselor, principal, and I all met before school to help my daughter who was having a hard time in reading. She goes to the before school learning help and is in LAP for extra help. I disagree with the last post that the principal is not willing to help. I went to him a few times with problems and he took care of them right away. The school just keeps getting better and better and that is because of the teachers and Mr. Zarling. My daughter is doing things in 3rd grade that my son did in 4th grade in Tennessee. Unfortunately, we only have 1 more year at Beachwood. We will miss Beachwood and Mr. Zarling since he is leaving after this year.

Not impressed with this school at all. There are several teachers who really try hard and are great, however a majority of the staff, including the principal are not helpful and rude. My child was not happy in this school.

I am really pleased with Beachwood, the teachers, and principal. My granddaughter is in K and has really come a long way since the day she started. Her teacher is a wonderful teacher and brought out the best in my granddaughter, she loves school. This has been a great experience for her and I just hope we are still here when her sister starts school.

I was so worried about my son only going to school for 2 hrs. I was not sure if he was going to learn in such a short time. But he has learned alot. he is reading and counting by 10's and much more. I'm very happy with my sons progress .

I have been very happy with how much my son is learning at Beachwood. We have been here for 3 years. When we started he had a hard time reading. He got extra help from the teachers in the classroom and in the LAP program to get him extra help. The teachers we have had all went out of their way to help. The PTA works very hard and does a great job. There are a lot of events after school for families to spend time together. My son sometimes can be difficult, but the teachers and principal have taken the time to meet with my husband and me before he left to come up with a plan to make sure I was supported. I can not thank everyone at Beachwood enough for everything they have done for my family. It will be sad when we have to leave.

Both my daughters have been at Beachwood for 2 years now. The staff is great, and they really care. The PTA is very active. The school could use a new field, and a couple upgrades but that is more a budget issue then the schools fault.

The principle and teachers are caring. They work really hard to make sure the children are successful. They have been very responsive to my child and my family needs. We are military....there have been challenges with deployments etc.

I was really concerned about sending my children here when I read the reviews. I have to say that I am happy with Beachwood. They separate the readers into different rooms so each student is able to work at his or her own level. Also, my first grader is learning math concepts in a way that seems to make sense to her and she is able to apply them easily in everyday situations. I do feel that sometimes there is a high tolerance for disruptive behavior during class time, in the upper grades.

My son is in 3rd grade and he has attended Beachwood since Kindergarten. The atmosphere at the school has greatly improved in the last 2 years with some changes in staff. My son loves his school and they have made very positive steps to become a great learning environment. The principal and staff that are there now are super.

Beachwood elementary made my daughter's transition to a new school a very happy experience. We moved to the area when she was in 3rd grade. She's in 5th now and so far we've never had any problems with the staff or schoolmates or the curriculum. I've found the teachers and principal approachable and sensitive to the students needs and no parent concern was too trivial. We are also very satisfied with the after school program that my daughter attends. If your child/ren will be attending this school, let me be the first to welcome you!

I am deeply disappointed with the Beachwood Elem. school curriculum. My child has been attending this school for 2 years and I feel as though the education they are receiving is below standard with other schools they have attended. During my children's time at this school my children have received homework packets on Monday which they are to turn back in on Friday, however my children have them completed by Monday evening. The teachers do not correct spelling errors. My oldest child is in the 5th grade preparing for middle school next year and the school has not addressed what middle schools are available for our child to attend and I was informed the one my daughter wanted to attend already had their registration. Their is issues with religion and race in the school which are not being addressed as well.

My child is learning alot for her 1st grade year. The staff is lovely and the principal is great. The atmosphere and the environment is wonderful. I have never had any problems or complaints.. As long as my child is happy , and learning that is what that matters. She will be going into 2ndgrade next school year, She has attended since kindergarted. Keep up good work

My son came to Beachwood entering 2nd grade in the middle of the year. He was having a lot of trouble at the school he was attending in Florida with reading. He has been at Beachwood for 4 months and already his reading level had improved. The one on one learning style at Beachwood is outstanding. I love this school so sad to have to leave during the summer because of a PCS.

I have been associated with this school since 2001. My son attended from K - 5 and my daughter is currently in 3rd grade. My wife and I could not be happier with the education our children have received. The teachers go out of their way to ensure all students are treated as individuals and receive the best education offered. The staff and administration are top-notch. While there have been issues in the past; more than 3 years ago, most of these were the attempts by angry, bitter parents who failed to follow the procedures to addressing issues with the school, the school district and the local military officials. As a matter of fact, one of the most vocal parents used her husband's military grade/rank (E-9/CSM) as a means of intimidation for the teachers/staff at the school. If your child will be attending Beachwood, congratulations!

Worst school my child has attended. There seems to be little emphasis on education and curriculum, most of the work and newsletters sent home are about behavior, sharing, etc. If you have a gifted child they will not be challenged or encouraged to develop. My child is often paired with below average students and told she must 'help teach' them. This is unacceptable, but a big part of her teacher's 'teaching philosophy' which focuses more on behavior/sharing between the children than actual teacher-led learning and interaction. I think this is partially because of the large class size, no time to address children individually. My child is often teased, but her teacher does not address it. She is often told to 'solve it herself'. The number of days off and half days are unacceptable. My husband and I will not be sending her to this school next year.

Beachwood had made it really easy for my son transferring in from another school from out of state. Compare to the other elementary, I feel Beachwood is alittle tougher on what is taught which I have no complaints because my son is learning more. I'm not too happy with teach and parent communication though, it can use some sort of streamline process. Once I sent a letter to my son's teacher and did not get a return sticky note or anything to let me know if she's received it, I followed up and still didn't get response so my son did not get his homework and had to catch up on a lot in sort period of time. The same for faculty members because I left message on VM once and never got response. I like the fact that the school does events after school for military families, that is awesome!

Beachwood, same as other public schools in the area, suffers from a poor curriculum that is presented by the state of WA (Which has very low education ratings compared to the rest of the US). The school tries but tends to place too much emphasis on shaping childrens behavior rather than molding their minds with knowledge. Children who are obviously way ahead of their peers are not being challenged, whichmay contribute to the behavioral problems. The bored will find 'other' things to do... I would suggest setting aside an hour in the afternoon for those advanced kids to work on something more challenging or a good project, however we all know that with the pathetic school hours in WA state (excessive half days, days off, or the fact that the normal school hours for some ages are way too short) that this could potentially never happen.

I love the school. It is moderate in size. Teachers are friendly. Principal is as well. Military families are supported as well. We love it.

Beachwood is not the best school & does not work one-on-one with their students and does not feel it in their budget to help kids get Special Ed testing so they do not have to fork over the money...if given the choice go to another District all together.

I think the overall communication of the school could be much better for example I was asked to come to a school assembly where my child was being honored 2 days prior to the event. I think my child is learning a lot and overall I am impressed with the level of learning.

I think the school is okay. My kids only got a chance to go 3/4 of the school year there. The one thing I see missing is the teachers connecting with parents by giving out notices for award assemblies way to late. I did like my kids teachers though and the principal.
