Our son attended the Beginning School and just completed Kindergarten at Charles Wright Academy, and it was truly the perfect start to his educational journey. From day one, the teachers created a warm, nurturing environment where he felt safe to be himself, try new things, and make friends. Socially and emotionally, he blossomed. He learned to navigate friendships, express his feelings, and build genuine confidence, all guided by teachers who clearly know how young children grow.

Academically, what sets CWA apart is how seamlessly they weave learning into play and exploration. The campus's forested area became an extension of the classroom, and my son came home nearly every day with a story about something he'd discovered outside a mountain of wood chips full of possibilities, a slug, a "science experiment" with mud and leaves. That hands-on, nature-based learning didn't come at the expense of academics; if anything, it deepened his curiosity and made early literacy and math feel like natural extensions of his everyday adventures.

One moment that stays with me: we were driving through the area on a weekend and as we passed the school I jokingly said, "Should we just drop you off here?" Without missing a beat, our son said "Yes!" completely serious and thrilled at the suggestion. We couldn't stop laughing, but it also said everything about how much that place meant to him. This wasn't a kid who tolerated school, it was a kid who wanted to be there even on a Saturday.

By the time he finished Kindergarten, he could read, he could problem-solve, and equally meaningful, he knew how to be a good friend and a thoughtful member of a classroom community. The small class sizes meant his teachers truly knew him as an individual.

We couldn't be more grateful for the foundation Charles Wright Academy gave our son. It set the tone for how he sees school: as a place of adventure, friendship, and discovery. Highly recommend the Beginning School and Kindergarten program to any family looking for a place where their child can grow academically while still being a joyful, curious little kid. We are looking forward to many more years at Charles Wright as he continues to flourish!

Our son Robbie has a deep interest in sharks, honestly, obsession might be the more accurate word, and his teachers didnt just notice it, they embraced it. They created a sensory table in the classroom and thoughtfully filled one area with sharks with him in mind. When Robbie walked in and saw it, his whole face lit up. He spent the entire week talking about his sharks and proudly telling us how the teachers made that space especially for him. It made him feel truly special. The teachers and staff at Charles Wright take the time to get to know each child and make them feel cared for, understood, and seen. This is just one of the many reasons we trust Charles Wright with caring for our children.

My daughter is wrapping up 2 years in the Beginning School program. Our experience has exceeded all of our expectations.

First, the teachers and administrators: We feel like we know each of them well, and that they really know us and our kid. We are one team in her education & growth. It was a tough decision, as she is a August baby, to determine if she would go to kindergarten and not only did her teacher, Kara, make time in the busy school day to discuss with us, so did the beginning school Director, Rixa. Our daughter has 3 incredible teachers (Kara, Jamie, and Brianna) for a class of about 15, and a true connection with the faculty across the school, especially the Atelier teacher, Jenn. The Head of School, Rachel, also makes us excited for the long term impact CWA can have on her education.

Second, the philosophy, representation, and safety: Our child is an only child and it was very important to us that she be in an environment where she learns empathy and how to work with and support others. We love the play based learning in the Beginning School. It nurtures her curiosity and helps us see places where she is naturally strong, and places where she needs more support, in a safe and fun environment. She comes home a physical mess most days (covered in dirt and art supplies) but with a happy heart and full smile as well as some new fun topic she learned all about! We are also an interracial family and wanted our child in an environment where she would see all types of family structures, strong examples of thriving adults and kids, and be able to feel seen in the books being read and the content taught. They do self portraits each month to help them grow into their confidence and self awareness and its so beautiful to see. Theres also a little table outside her classroom that features what we are reading this week and every time I pass by it, it fills me with pride!

As a side note, when we first moved in to town and I heard of the school, frankly I thought paying for a child to go to preschool in a private school was ridiculous. Then I learned that the price was comparable to the Montessori daycare we had our child in and the experience was unbelievably superior. For us it was the difference between a lovely daycare and a safe and fun true learning environment. I cant believe the value honestly for what you receive. And now we are part of a community we are invested in, that is invested in us that we cherish and our daughter is thriving!

We have had a wonderful experience at CWA over the past 6 years both in the Lower School and Beginning School divisions. Both divisions have leadership and teachers that amazing. Our children are prepared both socially and academically for their journeys ahead. This school has been a wonderful choice for our family.

This schools has a culture problem. The culture problem is not from the current or recent Heads of School who left in frustration, but because of the history of the school, the money that talks louder than ethical treatment of children and employees, and the way they look to blame someone instead of focusing on why they have a culture problem.

After a tough four years under the previous Head of School, CWA is once again a caring and supportive community under Head of School Rachel Rippl. Students are challenged academically and achieve impressive college admissions. Faculty are extremely dynamic and dedicated, and seem to enjoy working at CWA once again. The Upper School is small but growing, and students are generally involved, kind, and driven to do well.

This school and their teachers are not equipped to handle children with disabilities, specifically ADHD. The school has made it very clear that they want a certain type of child that fits into their box of acceptable. Neodivevrgent children do not fit into this accepted group.

There have been many changes this year which were unnecessary. All the leadership changes and different agendas they are pushing really makes it an unenjoyable experience. My child used to feel happy and accepted going to this school. This year is different. If things continue down this route I will be pulling my child out of this school and finding something better. For the amount of money you'd expect better.

My child attended BGS at CWA for 2 years. The first year was a positive experience mostly, with caring teachers, a smooth transition into the school community, Unfortunately, the second year was markedly different and brought several significant challenges that impacted our overall experience. One of the most noticeable changes was a VERY high staff turnover. Teachers and assistants were replaced every few months, which disrupted consistency in the classroom. While the campus itself is beautiful, well maintained and offers excellent physical spaces for learning and play, the quality of the school experience ultimately depends on the stability of the staff and the structure of the programs.
A major concern was the absence of an established curriculum and an inexperienced head of department leading the Beginning School. Without a clear and consistent academic framework, the program felt more of a daycare than a intentional early childhood education settling. This lack if structure meant that skill progression, academic goals, and developmental benchmarks were not clearly communicated or consistently implemented. While some teachers worked hard to create engaging activities, there was no school wide plan that ensured children were building on their skills from one term to the next.
Additional concerns included unexplained injuries, bruises and lumps on my child that were never fully addressed to a satisfactory level, leaving us uncertain about supervision and safety measures in place during the day. Another example of reduced transparency was the removal of advertised Spanish and Music classes once school started, without prior notice or communication to parents. These classes differentiated them to other schools and their sudden discontinuation significantly changed the program we thought we had enrolled in.
The advertised teacher-student ratios also did the match what we experienced. With inconsistent staffing levels, raised questions to provide adequate individual attention and supervision. Furthermore, issues with student behavior and peer interactions were not consistently or effectively managed, which contributed to an environment where safety and respect were not always priority.
To be clear, there were dedicated, caring individuals within the program who worked hard for their students, and facilities at CWA are excellent. However, in our experience, the shortcomings in leadership, curriculum and communication outweigh the positives Do your research.

My family moved from Seattle almost 4 years ago, mostly driven by the school situation... academically struggling public schools and a Seattle private school scene that is so exclusive and wealthy that we didn't feel like it was a fit for us. Our son is now finishing 8th grade and will be heading to Charles Wright's upper school in the fall.

CWA had a rough patch during Covid (like many schools did), exacerbated by leadership issues with the Head of School that was brought in from 2020 - 2024, but none of that impacted our son's incredible middle school experience. Caring teachers, small classes with individualized attention for both the subjects he excels at (math!) and struggles with (humanities), a kind and connected family community.

This year, the new school leadership (Rachel Rippl as Head of School and her team) has been fantastic. Faculty and student morale is off the charts high. Faculty and staff members that departed during the previous administration are already starting to return. The positive energy in the community is amazing. We are so excited for high school here!!

Charles Wright is BACK! The school went through some challenges but the new leadership team has invigorated the community and faculty, staff, parents, and students are rallying behind them. My child is having a great experience. Amazing teachers. Breathtaking campus. The experiential education program is second-to-none. A year ago I couldn't recommend CWA, but now I'm telling the world about how great it is. If you're looking at independent schools in the Tacoma area, you definitely need to check out Charles Wright Academy.

If youre looking for an educational institution that values its mission and the people who make it happen, Charles Wright Academy is truly a special place now more than ever. Im proud to be part of this community. I'm proud to be a Tarrier!

As one can tell from past reviews, under previous leadership, the work environment often felt tense and discouraging, with little room for error. It brought heightened states of anxiety, and many felt the weight of a toxic culture that didnt align with the mission and values that initially drew us to CWA. But everything changed with our new Interim Head of School. The new leadership is a breath of fresh air, bringing a spirit of openness, empathy, and care to the community. There is a renewed focus on collaboration and creating a culture of mutual respect. Its evident that the Interim Head of School is not only committed to the success of the students but also to the well-being and growth of employees. The transformation has been remarkable. Morale seems to be higher, communication is more transparent than before, and employees are being invested in again. Its exciting to come to work now knowing that Im trusted to do my job as a professional.

Charles Wright Academy is not the school it was when our family started attending years ago. What was once a vibrant, respectful, inspiring, and safe community is a place where families and staff operate in a state of fear and retaliation by leadership. We have seen a majority of wonderful teachers and educators leave or get fired (or contracts not renewed because of fit) in the past few years. And now families are leaving hand over foot. The head of school, Susan Rice, has dismantled this community with incredibly toxic leadership and there is no coming back from that as long as she is in charge. She operates like a true dictator and if you give any criticism, you are out. We wont be coming back for the long-term if she continues to lead the school because there will be no school left to lead.

Sadly, Charles Wright Academy is going through some very rough and scary times. There has been a massive--almost 90% turn-over in all levels of the school, both administration and teachers not to mention a lot of families leaving or not coming back. Almost all of the Board has been replaced and new board members are personally appointed by Susan Rice, Head of School. This has created a very dangerous gap in transparency and accountability. The Board is either unwilling or unable to provide the governance to address an overwhelming number of concerns and complaints over the past few years about the Head of the School. We eventually sent a letter to the Board sharing our concerns and have not heard back other than a response letting us know they received our letter and were working on a response. We looked for a Compliance Officer at the school who could independently monitor and provide a safe and effective route for complaints and investigations but we have found none. Very concerning, is we can't see anyone on the current Board with a legal, ethics, or HR background either. We are very perplexed that the Board doesn't have an open channel to the parents or even the Family Association. Now it is the end of the school year, we have already committed to one more year financially, but we cannot see ourselves returning after this next year if we do not see an immediate response from the Board to stop all the chaos and instability we see and feel. We love so much about the school and really hope they will turn things around before it's too late.

I have been apart of CWA for 7 years. I feel supported by all of the amazing teachers. I feel happy everyday and feel academically supported the moment I step into the school. I think that the Head of School Susan Rice is a great addition. She is kind, welcoming, and treats everyone with respect. I would recommend this school to everyone.

I am a student here in the middle school, I wake up every morning willing to start the day and go to school. I dont only learn academically at CWA but I learn emotionally, mentally, and physically. Charles Wright Academy has supported me through every challenge that I have had. I will always recommend this school. Going to CWA for more than 6 1/2 year I have always had the teachers to support me. The head of school, Susan Rice is an amazing addition to this school. With all of the changed she has shaped this school into something that kids love to wake up and go to.

At Charles Wright Academy, I've learned to remain silent and refrain from advocating for myself, as doing so leads to being ostracized and monitored closely. The work environment is toxic, leaving me feeling undervalued and unsafe. The high turnover rate reflects the pervasive issues. The school's leadership fails to prioritize the well-being of its faculty and staff, and instead, major issues are downplayed or blamed on others. My grievances include delayed W2 forms, delayed reimbursements, and budgetary constraints hindering classroom resources. With an annual salary lower than that of public school teachers, the lack of support and transparency is disheartening. I cannot recommend this school to others; it's a toxic environment that prioritizes appearances over the well-being of its employees.

Being part of the CWA community for the past six years has been an incredible journey. CWA is a place that celebrates our sons achievements, whether they occur within the classroom or beyond. Our son has flourished both academically and athletically, and the camaraderie among the parents in his cohort is truly inspiring. As we look forward to the transition to Middle School next year, our excitement only grows!

Choosing a school for our child is a privilege that we dont take for granted. At CWA, children are at the heart of every decision. Its a community where everyone strives to excel, always keeping the best interests of the kids in mind. While no school is perfect, the commitment to our childrens well-being at CWA is unwavering.

As a parent, I can confidently say that CWA is not your typical school. If youre looking for a static environment where every child receives a cookie-cutter experience, this isnt the place. CWA embraces the dynamic nature of growth and change. While honoring and respecting traditions, the school does not limit itself or remain stagnant in their name. Our dedicated faculty and staff encourage our kids to step outside their comfort zones, try new things, and learn from both successes and failures. We are unafraid to tackle tough challenges, even when they are unpopular. This is a place where innovation and growth thrive, and we feel incredibly grateful to be part of this inspiring journey. The school's responses to the negative reviews are inaccurate. Complaints have been brought to Administration and the Board in many ways over the past several years including emails, conversations, surveys, and exit interviews to name a few. In my experience (and all of them were not anonymous) they have been either not responded to, not followed up on and/or dismissed. What has become clear is an organization who will not take a critical eye and evaluate what potentially could be going on to improve or address the concerns and negative experiences families and employees have had. If more time was spent actually communicating and having open dialogue with families and employees rather than monitoring websites and sending blanket rose-colored emails they would find a lot more success and progress on getting the school back on track and less divided. There is a lot of mention of the amount of turnover of staff/employees (which is valid, accurate and very concerning) but people should also know the same amount of turnover has occurred with families/students. Pay particular attention to middle school and upper school as their enrollment rates are significantly lower where some of the grades have less than 30 students. Families do not expect faculty to stay forever and it is understood there will be turnover but at this school it has been rampant. The Board and Admin should be doing as much as they possibly can to understand why employees and families are leaving, and what they can do to retain them.

My children have attended Charles Wright for the past decade. During that time, they have developed an incredible love of learning through hands-on activities, experiential education, and personal connections with their teachers. One of the greatest testaments to the value of the school is the way they talk about it. Their faces light up when they tell me about a recent science experiment, a new art project, how a coach encouraged them, or an upcoming field trip they cant wait to attend. In a time, when many schools are cutting back on enrichment, Charles Wright is investing even more time, energy, and resources to create meaningful learning opportunities on and off campus.

As with any institution, there are still ways to grow and improve. As it continues to evolve, the school is actively working to incorporate feedback from families and community members, which I appreciate. We are incredibly grateful for the solid foundation our children have received and know that it will continue to benefit them for many years to come.

I have worked with CWA over the past several years and having worked across various divisions at Charles Wright Academy, I've always been impressed by the faculty's dedication. The support from the head of school, and leadership throughout each division, not to mention all of the top notch team that work behind the scenes is somewhere I can continue to see myself growing along side with confidence. As a teacher I have continuously appreciated the trust the administration instills in their teachers/faculty. I am empowered to create engaging learning experiences and truly connect with our students through leadership in each division. However as a mom, experiencing that same care firsthand with my son is truly heartwarming. We decided to take a chance on Charles Wright and it has not disappointed. The class sizes are perfect, and the teachers and staff are incredibly caring and dedicated, and their enthusiasm for fostering a love of learning is contagious. My son's teacher specifically and her miraculous assistant teacher in particular, have gone above and beyond to help him thrive in the classroom. They take the time to understand his needs, how to challenge him while nurturing him and to top it off they create a supportive environment where he and his classmates are having fun while feeling valued.

I am a bit biased being able to teach on this stunning campus, BUT the beautiful forest setting and the school's strong focus on community create a truly special place to be a part of. Our son and his friends love participating in all of the extra curricular programs from chess, to theater, Kids club to watching the big kids on the field (Go A's)! We are always greeted with a welcoming smile, an open door (physically and metaphorically) and partnership. We're confident Charles Wright is the school for our son to shine.

Having taught in public schools for over 2 decades, I can honestly say that Charles Wright Academy is hands-down the best School in which I have ever worked. Nowhere that I have taught has given me the autonomy and support in creating my classroom curriculum that I have received from the Administration and leadership here at Charles Wright. The opportunities to collaborate with my peers, families and the community is unparalleled and I couldn't be more thankful to be a part of this school.

I was not asked to write a review by anyone in the school or the community, but after reading many of the negative and, frankly, rude lambasting of school leadership and the school in general, I could not stay silent any longer. I get it, change is hard. Change is difficult. Sometimes change is necessary. Times change and so too do best practices and policies. Things simply cannot always be done exactly as they have always been done. Science, safety, technology and our world are constantly evolving and we must sometimes make difficult choices to make changes at an institutional level that can leave former students, family members and staff disappointed. I can tell you that no major policy change, personnel change, best practices shift or safety upgrade is done on a whim or made by one single individual. I can also tell you that not every staff member, student or family member will be privy to those conversations. That is just how it works.

As a Department Chair I know firsthand that some people have behaved in inappropriate ways that made their dismissal or resignation necessary. I also regularly experience people laying blame at the feet of administration for normal job related circumstances that are unfortunate, but not anyones fault like W2s being late. My advice for anyone in the education industry is that if you want to be treated as a professional, start by being a responsible professional. I encourage my peers to be a part of the solution, not just lamenting a problem.

Not every school is going to be a match for everyone. That's just a simple fact. I can tell you I love Charles Wright and will stay here for as long as this institution will have me.

Charles Wright Academy is the perfect fit for our children and for our family! The teachers know my children and understand each one enough to nurture, support, and challenge each one in the way they need to grow. My children are seen, valued, and have grown in confidence and curiosity because of the experiences CWA has provided them. The vision of leadership that values the experience of each child from the Beginning School and Lower School, where my children are, to the Middle School and Upper School where the sprouts of these indelible seeds of learning can be seen, like in this year's fabulous Arts Festival, distinguishes CWA in its delivery of an excellent education at all levels. We are not going anywhere and cannot recommend Charles Wright Academy, its leaders, faculty, staff, coaches, and absolutely stunning 107 acres more highly than we do. Proud to be Tarriers!

My daughter loves going to school every day. She loves her teachers, and they show a deep concern and genuine interest in helping her become the best human she can be. She loves being a Tarrier, and I especially appreciate that she can participate in so many different activities, something that seemed a lot more intimidating in a much larger school like the ones I went to.

I was concerned that having recently been diagnosed with ADHD we may need to move her to a different school. But her teacher, the specialists, and the administration have all shown a real enthusiasm in providing her the support and accommodations she needs in her school life. I also appreciate the support they've shown us as a family. It truly makes me feel like we belong.

I'm confident we've made the right choice for our daughter in Charles Wright.

When we first started at Charles Wright, we were allured by the Lower School, including the building itself, the teachers, and structure of the curriculum. Come to find out this is a bit of a trap, as when we transitioned to the Middle School, things completely shifted. The rooms themselves are dated, leaky, sports barely exist, teachers were brand new in the teaching field, and the curriculum reflected a rigid, by-the-books technique that was the opposite of our expectations. Friends had told us about the very open-ended nature of the classrooms, with thoughtful discussions taking place on the fly as topics arose amongst the community of students in such a manner you wouldn't find elsewhere. This seems to have changed with the new administration. We could put up with a fair amount, but the recent bouts of blame-shifting these shortcomings onto whatever is convenient (Covid, teacher turnover, imaginary forces, whatever) is sophomoric and a sign of a sinking ship. So we'll be hopping off before it gets even worse.

Once upon a time, Charles Wright Academy was a great school. But toxic leadership can destroy the idyllic and as a longtime parent at the school, it has been sad to witness the schools downward spiral and the effect on students, faculty and staff. When you have a school leader who values a cadre of yes-people over critical thinkers who ask tough questions you see a school churn through faculty and staff at an alarming rate and academic standards fall precipitously. Recently many parents, faculty and staff thought their prayers had been answered when they received a very rare communication from the CWA board who have kept their heads firmly buried in the sand for years. Many of us allowed ourselves to hope the board was finally stepping up after years of negligence as faculty, staff and families have left the school in droves. But the board broke their silence only to give their vote of confidence to a head of school on whose watch more than 80% of faculty and staff (and that is honestly a conservative estimate) have left. Mid-year departures are sudden, frequent and mysterious and often not even acknowledged by the school. Academic standards are questionable due to the high teacher turnover rate and sports teams in the high school have to pull up 8th graders just to have enough kids. Parents have learned to look over their shoulder when sharing a school concern with a friend as the wrong person hearing a comment can lead to parents being called into the heads office and threatened with their childs expulsion if they dont toe the party line. Note the recent flurry of positive reviews the school has engineered as a growing group of parents came to this site to air their frustrations as they recognize the board has turned a blind eye to the schools atrocious leadership. It is much easier to rig more smoke and mirrors than it is to fix whats broken. But with this toxic, mercurial head of school and a board that backs every questionable decision, CWA is and will remain broken. Lasciate ogne Speranza, voi chintrate.

Parent of student at CWA for 9 years. Not returning for HS. For the price the school could be much better and was at one point. Before the current administration, this was one of the best elite private schools in the region. Now, it's an overpriced, decent at best, private school. Yes, it's better than most public schools. Compared to the other private schools in the area, it's not a top ten. Education is ok, but again, for the cost, students should be getting much more. There is an alarmingly high rate of teacher turnover, which has led to a change in culture and community - not in a good way. Classroom sizes are small, but not by design; this is because of all the students that have left. This has also led to an overall decline in athletic programs in both MS & HS. MS athletes are often asked to play HS sports because of the decrease in student population. Lower school might be better than most, but that's not a high bar to hurdle. Plus, the lower school has two of the best teachers in the region, holdovers from previous administrations. If you are just looking for status, CWA might be a good fit. If you are spending top dollar on education and expect much more, look elsewhere.

Charles Wright Academy has offered an amazing experience and a great education for my three kids offering a high level education as well as teaching students great life skills including how to treat others with respect and dignity. I recommend this school as a great option for students who want to experience the best in class for all ages!

I am a parent and an alum. I did extensive research on this and other local campuses before enrolling my child. I choose CWA for the educational opportunities, project-based learning, small class sizes and personal attention, caring and dedicated instructors and staff, beautiful facilities and forest, safety, focus on teaching positive values, and community participation.

I recommend staying as far away from this school as possible.

As with many other reviews on this site and others, I experienced the negative effects of a toxic workplace everyday when I walked on campus. I would regularly be reprimanded by my superior for things they had directly signed off on, and was made to be fearful of what people were saying about me behind my back. On occasion, I would ask a question (as anyone who wants to grow should) and I would be made foolish for not already knowing the answer. I know I am a good teacher, but working at a place like CWA made me question myself like I had never before.

Aside from the toxic workplace environment, decisions made from the top are ruining what once made CWA special. In the lower school, they have removed dedicated learning spaces for foreign languages, science, and for students who need additional support. Additionally, they have moved the art space outside of the lower school building to the upper school art wing. In doing so, they have effectively devalued those classes, and removed time and space for homeroom teachers to plan and prep for their lessons. They have done this to increase the number of classes they can fit into the lower school building. While the school may say this is growth I say it is an over inflation of the only part of the school with positive enrollment numbers.

If you value teachers who have the confidence to teach thoughtful lessons and to continue to grow in their own strengths, I would avoid Charles Wright Academy.

Ive been a member of the Charles Wright Academy community since my parents enrolled me as a second grader in 1982. My father was enrolled in 1957 (the year the school was founded) and graduated in 1965. My (third generation) children are current students, the first having been enrolled since 2010. Ive been actively involved in the school since I graduated in 1993. Over the past 42 years, Ive known and/or worked with five heads of school.

My point is, my family and I have a very deep, generational understanding and appreciation for CWA going back to the very beginning. Were Tarriers through and through. We love this school. Its like family to us.

Charles Wright in 2024, as it was in 1965, 1982, 1993, and 2010, is a fantastic school. From preschool through 12th grade, faculty and staff are second to none, academics are best in class, and the campus is breathtakingthe most beautiful it has ever looked.

Education evolves and teachers come and go, but at the end of the day Charles Wright is all about the kids. Many other schools are run (or overrun) by a handful of faculty who, sadly, value themselves, their identities, and their ideologies over and above the students. Thankfully, the tail doesnt wag the dog at CWA. The children always come first.

Theres room for improvement at every school, of course, but it doesnt get much better than CWA. Dont take my word for it. Come visit Charles Wright Academy in person and see for yourself why it is routinely voted Best in the South Sound.

I am incredibly thankful for the exceptional care and support that my daughters receive at CWA. The staff and administration consistently go the extra mile to assist my daughter who is in Beginning school and requires additional assistance, all while fostering a nurturing environment for my other daughter who is excelling in kindergarten. Their commitment to the well-being of each child is truly outstanding. I wholeheartedly recommend this school to any parent seeking a supportive and inclusive educational setting. Thank you for positively influencing my daughters' lives in such a meaningful way!

Great effort goes into preventing negative reviews of this school both in-person as a parent or faculty member and online as well. On the surface its a beautiful campus but that is a massive facade that attempts to cover up some seriously toxic practices happening there.

As a parent and former faculty member I can no longer provide a positive review or recommend this school. I have been a part of the CWA community for over 15 years and watched many changes occur throughout the yearssome good and some bad. But nothing can top what has happened since the new administration took over.

My daughter had a couple of favorite teachers at the school who announced they wouldn't be returning the next school year because they 'weren't a fit for the community'. At first I was quite surprised a teacher would proclaim something like this in front of their students and wondered if she had misinterpreted what was said, but after reading through some reviews and conferring with other parents, I believe it was the case. Even more surprising was that not one, but two teachers said he same thing. Under normal circumstances I would suspect a disgruntled teacher but this seems different.

I haven't been impressed with the school's curriculum thus far. Granted, we've only been attending for three years, but it all seems just marginally better than public school. Of course the students perform far better and behave well, but I think that's just due to parents investing more commitment and having the financial resource. The education itself is somewhat dated and cookie-cutter, which is the total opposite of what was hyped up during our admissions process. Essentially, the students perform well due to the work of the parents and the school takes credit for it. That's not to speak poorly of the teachers, I believe they're working hard and trying to create meaningful lessons, but are stifled by their own administrative turmoil. Regardless of that, we'll be switching schools after this year.

We have had a great experience at CWA with Beginning and Lower School. Nowhere is perfect - but when things have gone wrong, weve had good, open communication particularly with the head of school. The teachers are amazing, loving, smart, brave, and so much more.
Our kids are neurotypical, bright and well behaved, and our family believes in partnership with the school and teachers. We feel CWA has been a good fit for us - particularly with social emotional learning in beginning school, and just really supportive faculty and administration throughout.
I do think change is hard - but ultimately we like where things are going. For families with a customer service expectation or who may believe the rules dont apply, this probably will not be a great fit.
Some of these negative reviews are shockingly one sided - it seems many facts are missing. Dont believe everything online, particularly the anonymous stuff..

Our family is forever changed by the experience we have had at CWA. From the teachers and administration, I have found true partners in my sons growth. They have been cheerleaders in empowering him when hes struggled along with celebrating moments of achievement, both the smallest of successes and the major milestones.

There is a clear commitment to creating an environment and approach to learning that meets kids where they are, from appropriately challenging them to identifying their specific needs and offering personalized support. The curriculum is dynamic and enriching -- teaching foundational skills, encouraging creative problem-solving, and stretching kids mind to see the world in new and exciting ways.

I am confident that my child is set up for success with a love of learning and a strong sense of self-worth.

We really feel lucky to have found CWA. Our two young kids sincerely look forward to going to school every day. The school balances academics with arts and athletic opportunities. Our youngests favorite part of the week is when they get to visit the atelier, where else in schools these days do they put such a concentration on creating and art spaces for such young students? And where else do kids get the opportunity to explore and be inspired by over 100 acres of forestseriously it is at their fingertips? What about a ceramic space, robotics, music lessons, foreign language starting in Kindergarten, and small class sizes (aka low student to teacher ratio), check check and check. Also, they have great enrichment opportunities and after school care/activities. Like other reviews have mentioned, I wish I had gone to CWA as a kid because the opportunities are boundless. The staff do an incredible job creating a welcoming atmosphere that fosters learning, empathy, creativity, and curiosity. Sure, there has been turnover but that is everywhere, and it has not been a disruption to my children. Over the last two years weve watched our children blossom in unimaginable lovely ways. CWA is the village/community we were searching for. Dont let the tuition detour you as they offer financial aid and in my experience are not pretentious. Ive only had positive experiences with staff and other families, and am so grateful my children found CWA.

As a parent of multiple CWA students I have different students that have different needs. The school helps them all at their level. One might need more help from a teacher or access to a specialist. Its always offered or available. Ive always been impressed with the hands on learning, experiences and teaching my kids have access too. The learning specialist are amazing and go above and beyond to advocate for the students.
Would I send my kids to CWA again? Absolutely.

While things have changed at the school such is the nature of education. My kids dont do math the same way I did. I have asked questions about changes and always been given straight forward logical answers.

I dont subscribe to the bully, passive aggressive ways that disgruntled employees are trying to use to damage the school. Sometimes people are let go for a good reason and its nobodys business. At the end of the day the school is about the children. Mine are safe, well educated, treated with respect and have been given amazing opportunities.

I am proud my kids attend Charles Wright Academy.

My child has been at Charles Wright for three years so far. The experience hasnt been perfect, but thats what makes this place special. The teachers are amazing and have shown pure compassion and love towards my child.

Yes, there are definitely areas of improvement, but I can see the effort thats put in. This school is so diverse, especially beyond what you can see. It makes it hard to make decisions where everyone is happy. I think the school does a great job of trying to make sure everyone is seen and valued. This can rub people the wrong way, but you have to admire the effort.

Administration and teachers are remarkable. They do the best with the tools they have and you can see fun happening in the classroom. I cannot speak on the years before my familys arrival, but year over year, I have CWA move forward towards the right direction.

Our child is thriving in the Upper School. The small class size and the attentive and inspirational teachers have encouraged our child to love learning again. CWA feels like a family to us. There are many different activities, clubs and athletic opportunities for Lower, Middle, and Upper School students to be a part of. Each step of the CWA academic journey allows students unique experiences such as overnight beach hikes, international & educational travel opportunities, and volunteerism. We are always impressed by the dedicated hard working staff and faculty at Charles Wright Academy. The grounds and facilities are top notch. We would recommend this school to any families looking for a new home where their child will be welcomed and celebrated.

i started working at CWA last august (2023) and its been one of my best jobs since graduating high school in 2015. i cant speak to the school hours, cause im part time and only help out after school. with that being said, my experience has been pretty dope. most of the staff ive encountered with, have respected me and been quite nice. the kids are awesome and truly make working this job fun. their smart, funny and truly want to learn more about social issues impacting their young lives. i feel ive done a pretty good job at offering them a space to do just that, with the support the the after school extended day staff. while there are improvements, that i do notice; at the end of the day my priority is ensuring the kids in my care feel seen, respected and appreciated. which in my experience, isnt easy in a work environment that does not want to be better. CWA has not given me a reason to doubt that they dont want that same vision for their kiddos. which makes what i do, that much more fun and impactful.

Im a product of public schools and I was very much a sceptic when my kids mother said she wanted the kids at Charles Wright. A bit of back and forth until I agreed, and now 8 plus years later both our kids having gone for 8 & 6 years I wouldnt ever choose another school.
It starts at the top, the head of school Susan Rice is innovative, intelligent and always looking to progress the school to new heights all levels and grades. The board is supportive & diverse, the teachers are next level and care. My son has needed more help, and he gets it Daily, they are understanding and have been generous to my family with scholarships and any help we need with our two kids.
Im grateful for the village that is Charles Wright Academy! We dont plan on ever leaving!

This is our first year at Charles Wright Academy and my son is in the Beginning School and has had an amazingly positive experience. As a former educator and wife to a current teacher, we've been blown away by all the wonderful staff, teachers, and administrators. Each of his teachers knows him and he feels seen, valued, and heard. The communication has been superb; weekly newsletters from the teachers, and constant contact through the Procare app have kept me updated on all the wonderful learning happening in the Charles Wright community. We attended the Lower School musical, explored the forest for Earth Day, and even had a costume parade through the school on Halloween. The community is vibrant and we are proud that our son will be returning next year for Kindergarten.

I was recently told by our head of school to write a raving review of CWA, so instead I'm going to write my actual opinion and hope my real identity isn't revealed and I get fired:

Learning: The teachers are great, at least the ones who are still around and haven't been fired for 'not being a fit for the community' or left for other reasons. Most teachers can be great if given the proper tools and openness to teach and grow in their own way.

Teaching: Teaching used to be amazing, but administrative changes have completely upended that and that concept is a shell of its former self.

Social-emotional support: There was a counselor once, now there's not. If your child is neurodivergent in any way, there won't be any support.

Special Education: There is no special education here.

Safety: Things are quite safe for students. For teachers, if you consider the looming threat of being fired daily, maybe not so sfae.

Family Engagement: Again, this used to be amazing and a big part of what made the school great. School events, traditions, and general communication is an afterthought and things are kept in the dark from parents.

Choosing Charles Wright has been one of the best decisions we've made for our kids' education! They have an excellent teaching staff, supportive leadership and a community I am proud to be a part of. Family engagement is what you make of it anywhere you go. CWA students of the past and present are called Tarriers. "Once a Tarrier, always a Tarrier," unites our community dating back several generations. It is a strong and loyal community.
My kids all learn differently and each have been challenged and supported academically, socially and emotionally. The coaches really thrive on improving the kids' personal best while being inclusive of all abilities. I am really appreciative of the small class sizes, and safe learning environment which enables the kids to thrive. The arts program is incredible. I have a collection of paintings, pottery, glass art, digital art, portraits, a wooden duck and much more from when they were age 5 through to age 18. I'm so impressed with the experiential education that takes them all around the world, including Iceland, Japan, Costa Rica, Ireland, Korea, Turkey, France....this list goes on and on - this is hands on learning!
When I first drove on campus I was wowed by the expansive property and school nestled along the woods. Thirteen years later I can whole heartedly say that feeling has never gone away.

CWA has been nothing but life-changing for my family. I admit I was skeptical about private schools when I first looked at options in the greater Tacoma area for my rising kindergartner. Tours at the best public schools in the area left me wanting more for my child.

After touring CWA and meeting with the admissions team, I was left wanting to know if it was too late to enroll myself. Yes, private schools often lay high importance their traditions and history -- none of that truly mattered to my family. My highlight reel:
-- low student:teacher ratio throughout all the schools at CWA.
-- the introduction of foreign language in the Lower school;
-- the massive library in every division, filled with inclusive books on just about every subject
-- the dedication to experiential learning, which includes time in nature in the campus' massive forest with hiking trails
-- Art, Music, PE, STEM -- all of these subjects are being downsized or removed across the country in public schools, but at CWA, they are strong and growing.

You can tell CWA is full of teachers that care for each and every one of their students (and you can tell that there are ones that don't, and I don't mind turnover if it's allowing space for quality educators to come in). Every one of my child's teachers, so far, have been truly invested in their success and well-being. My child is also neuro-divergent and all of the teachers have felt like partners in developing educational learning plans and trying new tactics for maximizing their attention span and developing confidence. The additional support from Lower School Learning Specialist, to help ensure my child has an equitable learning experience, is something that a lot of families struggle with in the public school system.

When it comes down to it, the privilege and ability to select a private/independent school should truly be focused whether or not that school will best serve, motivate, challenge, and cultivate your children, their minds and their potential. Our family was looking for a school that was going to open my child's eyes and mind and change his life -- and we found it! CWA has a history of being an amazing place for students, and that history is built on a foundation of change and keeping up with the times to continue providing the best opportunities and education for their students, not sacrificing growth and change for the sake of "tradition" or how the school used to be.

Charles Wright has been a great school for my kids.

They've experienced a wide of range of opportunities: field trips that connect the classroom to the world, camping/hiking at the nearby mountains and beaches that teach exploration and teamwork, athletic competition, and of course, academic rigor throughout... to name just a few.

A large part of the foundation of who my kids have become is from their time at Charles Wright. Their ability to think, reason, challenge, and write well all come from their years in the halls and classrooms at CWA.

When viewed through the experiences of my kids, Charles Wright has been a great school. In the end, that is what matters.

As a staff member, I believe in the mission, future plans, and leadership of Charles Wright Academy.Although I am not in the same career path I started in at CWA, I am in a much better place for me, the school, and the students. Those in leadership saw there was a need to improve programming and systems, and recognized my professional and educational background in these areas. There has been room to grow programs, and I have been supported as I have implemented new programs and policies.

Our student body and family community is kind, giving, and cares deeply about the school. Our parent and family volunteers are becoming more active as we have been able to welcome volunteers back onto campus after the height of the pandemic.

Our campus is amazing, with trails, an outdoor classroom and beautiful sports fields and facilities. Although all the divisions (preschool, elementary, middle and high schools) have their own buildings, all divisions also work together and there are many opportunities for the whole school to come together.

Mostly, I love that I get to come to work every day and work with creative and exploratory students, and work with many faculty and administration that believe in the value of holistic learning.

Is it hard work? Absolutely. Are faculty and staff asked to use their skill sets in places that are needed where they might not have expected? Sure (I would also add that I personally have always offered or been asked to help with duties outside of my direct role, have been compensated accordingly, and have willingly volunteered for those duties), but I have also experienced that in every single work place I have ever been. Growth is an expected part of any job worth doing.

Since 2020 the field of education has experienced a high number of turnover as a whole. Most fields have. Turnover is an expected part of employment. What is most irritating is those who think that no one should ever leave an independent school except to retire. People move on from places of employment. It's more the norm than not, especially these days.

My child has been at CWA for 10 years. I have found the school education focused with great experiential ed opportunities and caring faculty and leadership. Smaller class size means individual attention from teachers, but a large enough student body to have athletic opportunities for many student athletes. Attending CWA has been a very positive experience.

Every school isn't for everyone, and you will see that as you read these reviews. I am happy many families find CWA to be the right place for their students - it's not for our family, and I believe CWA has an opportunity to make changes in the future that will help CWA become the leader in private education in the south sound, as it once was. Unfortunately, at this time, the Board of Directors of CWA has put their support firmly behind current Head of School Susan Rice. Our experience has been one of decreasing transparency, family involvement, and a constant turnover of teachers and staff. My young child had a rotating door of teachers, sometimes with warning, and sometimes without. I don't blame teachers for leaving - beyond payroll mistakes, delayed tax paperwork, and lack of budgets for supplies, there is a climate of fear as teachers who give notice are escorted off campus. There is a palpable environment of discomfort and retribution, as parents whisper about concerns, knowing there is a history of dismissal when concerns are shared. Major gifts to the school and funds raised via the auction are unaccounted for. The school touts their enrollment, but more important is retention - retention of families and faculty that build the community that CWA is striving for. They celebrate a growing athletics department thanks to the dedication of the parent volunteers driving the paid sports programs in the lower school. Uniform changes cited as simplifying and providing economical choices to families are instead driven by kickbacks and marketing images. CWA has lost the magic that brought us to the schoolthe board was aware of Susan Rice's documented history creating this exact situation, and chose to hire her anyways. They have doubled-down on that support, and I hope they look in the future as to the negative repercussions this has caused for their community and the reputation of the school.

Charles Wright makes an intentional effort to create learning experiences for students the align with the mission of active, joyful learning. Overwhelmingly, from the Beginning School to the Upper School faculty care for their students, care about them as people and celebrate their successes. The Head of School took over at a very challenging time, early in the pandemic. She was tasked with keeping the school open when COVID protocols were changing so frequently that it was hard to keep up. The Head of School has aligned the school behind its mission, values, Inclusion Statement and Portrait of a Tarrier. As an educator I have watched colleagues from all divisions work to bridge gaps, tear down silos and create connections with each other and the broader community. The last four years have been challenging and for the most part everyone has dug in, worked together and built on the amazing foundation that was already there. Of course, there are those for whom change is hard and so they have moved on. Not every school is for every family either and some family's have made the choice to move to schools that more closely represent their beliefs. All of that is okay to have happen. Charles Wright, however, brings a great deal of joy to those that have found their home here. Highly recommend!

Charles Wright could be such a great school if teachers were allowed to do their jobs and given the trust and respect they deserve. Teachers at this school are never given formal observations, yet are scrutinized and reprimanded for making decisions about student learning. It's a scary place to work when your email inbox could have an email demanding an after school meeting with no reason or explanation, or you could be told your paycheck was wrong, or your health insurance was canceled, or your W2 won't reach you until the second week of April. Many teachers are hired from out of state, encouraged NOT to get their Washington Teaching Certificate, and then bullied into staying out of fear of not being financially stable enough to live without a job.

This school claims to be inclusive, but the administration have openly talked about only wanting "premium students" and saying things about how students on the spectrum aren't "what we need in our community". They also make efforts to out LGBTQ+ students to their families and only call students by the pronouns their parents approve.
Administration expects their teachers to be on call constantly, yet are unavailable to assist when needed, or back out of events at the last second or leave early from events they agreed to chaperone. If a teacher or coach comments that having an admin at a particular activity would have been nice, they're met with ridicule and told they don't get to dictate administration's time.
Employees are docked hours from their sick and personal leave down to the 15 minute increment but also told that there are not "contarct hours" and are expected to stay "until their work is done".
Teachers leave due to mental health issues 100% imposed by their superiors who isolate them from their colleagues and create a culture of walking on eggshells.

An auction was held last year where parents payed to 'fund-a-need' which teachers submitted requests for. Most teachers never received a thing.

With the amount of people who have left, and the amount of people leaving at the end of the year, I cannot imagine this school passing easily through the reaccreditation process.

I would not send any student to the beginning or upper school at Charles Wright.

I am both a faculty member and parent at the school. Sadly, things are not looking good here both with the quality of education and the treatment of staff. Things have declined since the administration change around 2020 and haven't recovered. Staff turnover is so high it causes lots of confusion and sudden changes to previously longstanding traditions that made the school great. The turnover also keeps the curriculum from developing into anything substantial. We need a new head of school before the school is irreparably damaged, if it isn't already.

I have significant concerns about the direction of Charles Wright Academy. While I fully believe in the teachers who are obviously dedicated to their students, the leadership of the school feels very precarious and reactionary. It is alarming to see so many midyear departures, often hidden in newsletters with no notice, including in the leadership team. I am concerned about the motives of the Head of School and the absence of Board involvement to investigate ongoing concerns shared by concerned families and faculty. The sense of unease around raising concerns is alarming. From conversations with other parents it appears many families are considering if this school will remain the right fit due the current direction of the school.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the other recent reviews of CWA. My child enrolled a year before the pandemic. At first, it was the perfect environment for him and I was impressed by the number of long-standing teachers who could very openly communicate with parents, had fantastic teaching styles, and seemed to genuinely enjoy their relationship with CWA. In the years following the pandemic, it appears that something like 80% of the teachers have left, been replaced, and a good portion of those replacements have also left and been replaced. We receive somewhat regular emails from the school that one particular teacher / faculty has left, and I can only assume there's far more that we aren't receiving emails about. From what I understand, the new administration has caused great dissatisfaction amongst the faculty and I don't believe the excuse of the pandemic causing such disarray, especially this long afterwards. We are currently exploring other options for schooling and won't be returning for the 2024-2025 year.

With a change of leadership, I believe this school could turn back around and be great, but I'm not willing to wait around and let my son have a subpar experience in the meantime.

Sadly, this isn't the same school my son started at eight years ago. A once thriving campus now seems empty and lifeless. Students and parents are unhappy, and the great community we once had is now gone. There appears to be a revolving door of teachers and students. Beloved teachers have been let go, and new teachers and faculty don't seem to stick around. The teachers we do have are fantastic, but they do seem to be demoralized. Sports, clubs, and social activities are an afterthought and get minimal attention from the administration. Before the current administration took over, we could never have imagined taking our child to another school. However, like many of my child's classmates, this will be his last year at CWA, and he will continue at another private institute for high school. Until they change the headmaster, Susan Rice, the school will continue to spiral down, and its reputation in the community will be further diminished. At this time, I would not recommend CWA.

I am a recent graduate of Charles Wright who began attending as a first grader, and my experience at Charles Wright spans 12 years. If you had asked about the education and experience provided at Charles Wright a couple years ago, I would have raved about my favorite memories and experiences at the school. Unfortunately however, I can no longer honestly commend the school for the education nor the experience they provide students. In my final years at Charles Wright, the once vibrant and welcoming community quickly deteriorated into a disconnected, tense environment. My peers and I watched as our favorite teachers, faculty members, and even fellow students left the school due to dissatisfaction with the new environment that developed with the arrival of the current administration. Teachers repeatedly expressed their frustration as they saw their agency (in developing their curriculum, organizing student trips, and offering new opportunities to students) restricted by new administration policies. My peers and I watched as long-standing school traditions and the student voice were disregarded. More recent graduates have expressed the same concerns and frustrations to me. It saddens me to see the school and community I grew up in turn into what it is now, and I grow increasingly disappointed with the school as I see faculty members I revere leave the school due to the environment created by the new administration. I cannot honestly recommend this school to anyone as it currently is. I hope the board takes action to turn things around in the future.

Our family has been a part of the Charles Wright Academy (CWA) for over 10 years. Our two older daughters attended CWA during a time when the leadership was incredibly strong. This, in turn, promoted the retention of high quality teachers across school levels who were dedicated to providing nothing but the best education to their students. Unfortunately, the current head of school, Susan Rice, has poisoned the waters. She has been the MOST toxic leader the school has ever had. As a result, there has been a record number of long term students and faculty leaving the lower, middle and upper schools. Any faculty who has chosen to remain present does so only because of job security, not because they are happy with the institution. As a result, we are removing our third daughter immediately and leaving the community for good. It makes us very sad that our prior, very positive experience, has been tainted by toxic school leadership. The Best of South Sound surveys are rigged. AVOID!

im going to be a sophomore, and im gonna be straight honest if i have to go here for sophomore year i guarantee my familys gonna switch me to another school at the latest early 2022. this school is probably the most exclusive school ive ever been to. i understand that the teachers and some students try their best, but a pre-k-12 school probably isnt the best school for a new student. besides that, the school doesnt even have basic norms like a REAL COUNSELOR for MENTAL HEALTH, PE class for the upper schoolers. and for a tuition of 28,000, the academics are meh. in terms of teachers/advisors theyre decent. advisors do care about you if theyre worried. the main complaints i have are the mediocre academics, the VERY OBVIOUS exclusiveness, and in general how the school is being run.

This is part 2 to my two-part review on Charles Wright as once being a student there:

The community that surrounded Charles Wright used to be amazing. It was truly the thing that pulled me away from public school and made me want to go here. I would have to say that the community surrounding the school that I have experienced is truly unmatched. The parents and students all seem to have some form of care and respect for one another. This aspect of Charles Wrights community is the one thing that seems to remain throughout recent years. The reason I put this in my review is because I believe someone who is looking to put their kid in Charles Wright should really make sure the community is something that you investigate. I would ask around from the current parents and children about their experience in the school. This should give you a stronger grasp upon the state of the school. The school is receiving a new headmaster and this should hopefully turn things around for the school. I have high hopes that they turn the school around and make Charles Wright the prosperous school it once was.

I greatly value this focus at CWA, as academics, while important, are not the only goal for our family in selecting a school. Our non-religious family was very happy with the inclusion of the chapel program focusing on characteristics like these, but also felt they were included in their normal class experience, as well.

In the lower school levels, my students had no more than 10 minutes of homework per grade level, and homework was never a burden on my children's time or psyche.

Coming from a non-traditional school (Waldorf), my daughters' teachers were both phenomenal at making sure they were up-to-speed with strategies that may not have been used in their previous experience.

Our experience has been wonderful, transferring in when my girls were in grades 2 and 5. We look forward to a long relationship with CWA!
