This was a very difficult school for me when I went to it. I saw someone bullying the other kid so she got hit and didn't do nun. but when the kids that got bullied hit the girl that bullied them they got in trouble but the bully didn't.

Kindergarten homework was appropriate and reinforced what they learned in school. 1st grade homework is simply busywork. It is the same style worksheet every week.

There are three first grade teachers and only two of them actually teach, and my daughter got the other one. My child has come home from class saying that her teacher isn't nice to the black children in the class and they have to sit in their chairs all day will very little movement. That is very difficult for 6 and 7 year old children. I found out that this teacher had many parent complaints last year but the administration overlooked them instead of listening. I am just teaching my child everything I can at home to prepare her for second grade because she is not getting the education she deserves in the classroom. Her kindergarten experience was wonderful and I realize that there are bad apples everywhere. Just wondering how long they are going to hang on to this one who will only bring the school down.

My daughters kindergarten experience was wonderful. She was challenged academically and grew socially. Her teacher identified areas where she needed additional help and worked with us by providing resources and tools that helped her. Her first grade teacher is similar to a cookie cutter. The assignments they do in school are the same every week and my daughter dreads going to school (unless she has STEM lab that day). BESIDES this one teacher, we like the school. The STEM lab and the teacher for STEM do amazing projects and allow the hands on learning that most children do well with. There are many opportunities to be involved in the school and events throughout the year to come together as a school family. I have heard amazing things about the second grade team and I look forward to my daughter enjoying school again!

NO WAY they have a zero tolerance policy on bullying; which means they DENY bullying problems exists and retaliate against students and parents who report bullying.

Teachers are burdened by a toxic administration. There is NO physical education class, the music teacher holds her class in the noisy, crowded, messy gym, the art teacher has NO classroom and rolls a cart from room to room, students are pulled from specials (art, music, STEM, computer) to be "tutored" for EOGs, making any form of large group work impossible...no recorder karate, no musical for the 4th and 5th graders this year, no team sports in P.E.; no physical education at all.

Children are regularly and routinely disrespected by the administration. Children are admonished as a group because the principal is afraid to address REAL problems directly. That these kids have integrity, compassion and respect is a credit to their families and teachers and NOT the administration.

We have had some wonderful experiences at this school. There are teachers at this school that have impacted our lives in the most profound ways through nurturing, captivating and creative learning experiences that celebrate the kids and who they are. This school deserves a new principal.

As a retired public educator, I was concerned when I found out that my grandchildren were going to be attending the Academy of Moore. I am afraid that I had bought into the media's negative perspective of charter schools, but I was totally wrong! After several years of following closely, I can say without a doubt that this school is wonderful!! It promotes creative and critical thinking, focuses on the whole child and not just "The Test," and most importantly, my grandchildren are happy and content. They want to go to school each day! Great job AOM...keep up the good work!

I am the grandparent of four boys three of who are attending the Academy of Moore. This school is been a blessing to our family. I read some of the comments below from earlier times I must say my oldest grandson has been there since kindergarten and he is now in the fourth grade. I wish that the Academy of Moore went all the way through till high school. The small class sizes the fact that the teachers I think out of the box and the atmosphere is wonderful.
I've seen in public schools that when the children reach the third grade it's all about the testing that has nothing to do with the school but everything to do with the way the system is right now. I have seen my grandsons flourish and I'm hoping that my youngest grandson will be there next year. I am grateful to the principal who keeps the parents in the loop. I myself have not seen any turnover since my grandson has been there he has had wonderful teachers from kindergarten until fourth grade.

This school is single handedly saving Aberdeen school district children. If wasn't for them our children would go to a failing, run down school with literally a barbed wire fence. The Aberdeen school district is absolutely horrendous and the state, county or school board is doing nothing about it. To all those that think that charters are siphoning money from the system please take the time to do some research about the schools these kids would be sent to.

I'm very disappointed in this school. I thought it was a good school but it turns out that I was wrong. It's all about test scores, and money. They try to weed out the students that may not score high on the test.

Great teachers, solid academics, well-balanced curriculum. We had a bad experience at our previous school, but couldn't be happier with TAMC! We volunteer in the classroom regularly and get to see first-hand what innovative and caring teachers this school has. It is organized and events are well publicized. We are thrilled to have our children enrolled here.

They are compassionate, creative, and fun. My children are exposed to a wide variety of educational topics and are reading both fiction and non-fiction books. The teachers often think outside the box and this makes them very successful!

Cannot say enough great things about this school! Before I enrolled my son, who just finished first grade, I had my reservations after reading some reviews from years ago. However, after spending a year in Aberdeen schools, this still seemed like a better alternative. It was the best decision I made! My child flourished in academics and now loves going to school! He finished first grade reading above reading level and always earned high remarks on his progress reports. The teachers seem to genuinely care about the students and the learning experience was clearly tailored to the child's specific needs. If you want a school where even the principal knows every student by name, this is it!

My child never felt overwhelmed with the amount of homework. The everyday routine was fairly simple. He would do his daily reading on the bus on the way home from school, and then do his spelling words once he got home. He's in first grade, and this seems like the right amount of works for a first grader.

My son is in Kindergarten headed to first grade. Before we enrolled, I read some reviews from years ago and had my reservations on whether this was the right choice for us. We had originally hoped to send our son to Pinehurst or Farm life but ended up buying a house out of those districts. With the choices for public school for us in Aberdeen we chose AOM. I am so glad we did! I would choose this school above all of the other schools in Moore even if we were to have the option. My son is above grade level and I am impressed with the emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and math as much as I am with the school administration.

My children have been at this school for three years and we really like the school. I know that some parents really got up in arms over the school pick up policy (parents must stay in cars and be in line to pick up their children) but at the last school my child attended the policy was the same so I don't see any problem. In fact, I noticed the pick up line sped up a lot. As a parent who always stayed in my car anyway, I like that. Plus, it just seems safer nowadays to limit the amount of people going in and out of a school. They offer LEGO Club, after school care, STEM Camps, and other stuff my kids aren't involved in. Last year they had an event in the evening where NC State students came and taught engineering skills to the kids. That was pretty cool. Once my child hit 3rd grade the emphasis on testing was a bit of a shock. The teachers are great, but the state tests seem to be a lot more important that I think they should be. After talking to friends with kids at different schools I realized this isn't an issue specific to The Academy, but all public schools (at least in NC). I wish it was different but I guess I can't blame the school for a state-wide problem.

My son has attended this school since kindergarten and is now entering the fourth grade. Every teacher he had had has been knowledgeable, competent and caring. We have had no negative experiences. No school is perfect but this one far exceeds the Aberdeen public schools. I'm not sure how the clothes the Mrs.Schoen wears affects the school but apparently the last review thought it did. I have never seen here wear anything inappropriate. My family is considered E.D. and every year at Christmas my son receives presents from the school, he gets a snack pack every Friday to take home and they have often helped with uniforms. The education he is receiving is also fantastic. He was learning in 2nd grade what my friends son was learning in 3rd at Aberdeen. We obviously love this school the only thing I wish was different is that I wish it went all the way to 8th like it used to. Looking forward to the next 2 years at the Academy though!!!!!

Seeing negative comments about the most trivial things, makes me very angry. My child was stuck in a dead end school district at a school with horrible test scores and The Academy of Moore has been a saving grace for us. My son has always performed well in school, but I have never seen him so confident. Many of you frustrate parents like myself who have very limited options on where to go for a better education. If you are in Moore County take your pick! You have tons of great schools to choose from if you aren't happy. Don't tear apart the only chance some of us have to a better environment for our children. Think before you post and stop being so selfish. Test scores don't lie. I'll take a 6 over 3 any day.

I was not going to review this school until I saw the December 9th comment. This is the same information I was fed when I first visited the school. This was clearly written by the principal. The only truth to it is that the after school teacher is extraordinary and there are 3 or 4 good teachers. Other than that there is no reason to send you child to this school. The principal is friendly when you meet her, but if you ever disagree with her, or question something at the school you will see her true colors. She is often heard screaming at parents or staff members. She is very unprofessional and not very knowledgeable. I should have turned around the first time I saw her dressed so unprofessionally. Many of the students rarely stay more than a year or two. There is a huge staff and student turnover. Don't take my word for this, ask around in the community, especially the parents of the students that have left. The only people who have anything good to say about this school are the ones that are there. They just have not figured it out yet. My child was a student there for one year and he did not learn very much. Do not expect any rigor at this school. They are teaching to the test.

Both my children attend the Academy and love it! The classroom sizes are smaller and give more individualized attention than a traditional public school. The teachers care a great deal for the students and I ve noticed go the extra mile. The Academy has some great clubs such as Lego Club, Chess Club, Garden Club, in addition to soccer/lacrosse in the spring. The After School program teacher goes above and beyond the duty in assisting the children with their homework and using her own funds to supply a treasure box and snacks. The office manager is friendly, helpful and professional. The principal cares a great deal about each and every student and has an open door policy whereas most schools require an appointment to talk with the principal. I highly recommend this school to anyone looking for friendly, professional and a family centered school.

DO NOT PUT YOUR KIDS IN THIS SCHOOL! I pulled my daughter out mid year this year because the staff is incompetant. As a parent I should have free access to the school and its staff. I was in a car accident on the way to pick my child up from school. I tried for 15 minutes to call the school to give authorization for someone to pick my kids up. The school released my daughter to someone not authorized, without my permission. When I approached the principle about the phones not being manned she made excuses why her secretary was never at her desk. A few days later the school put out a phone call. Parents were no longer allowed to come in the building to pick our kids up. The excuse was it was to noisy and confusing for the teachers. We were told to stay out side and we could pick our kids up at the end of the building. 2 weeks later another computer generated phone call saying we must stay in our vehicles in the car rider line. Once again shows incompetence on the staff not being able to dismiss! The school feels like a prison when you walk in. Its staff is not very friendly and has a small handful of good teachers. There is so much more 904-2435 you can call me!

If you are considering placing your child in this school, I HIGHLY suggest that you speak to the faculty first, to include who your childs teacher will be. When I first enrolled my child, I was impressed with the teacher/student interaction as well as the professional atmosphere in general. My child was happy and we were happy. Within a year, this atmosphere changed to one of arrogance and degraded faculty/staff members. Every child has a different learning style, meaning it is the ethical responsibility of the teacher to work with students to assure they are in a progressive state of learning. No longer the case here. It was brought to my attention that the majority of the original staff I meet had "transitioned" to other schools for personal reasons. In other words, The Academy of Moore lost there best due to toxic leadership and an unprofessional enviroment. Be cautious and do your research first if you are considering placing your child in this school. I removed mine after the apparent realization was made, that my childs well being and education were no longer a priority to this paticular institution of higher learning.

Two of my children attended for two years. I liked the small size of the school and that all the kids know each other. My eldest did great here and went on to middle school with no problems. My younger child who is autistic and has behavior problems was not treated with enough encouragement by the teachers and was told he needed to go back a grade rather than address the true issue which had nothing to do with academics, but special needs. He had an IEP, but the hands on help he recieved was nill. There were not enough people to handle any child with specila needs. I have moved him to a public school where he recieves more attention and is now top of his clas and never neeeded to be held back at all. I recomend this school for people who are looking for a small clicky school where they family of staff is tight. but I do not recomend this school to any one who has a child with special needs!!

Love this school! From what I understand there have been a lot of changes for the Academy over the course of a couple of years, and it has really stepped up and is doing a wonderful job. I have two children that attend, and they have really blossomed academically and socially. The staff is super friendly and loving towards all children. I also like the diversity of the student body, and the fact that this school will challenge those students who are excelling in their studies. The Academy is now a school of progress and I believe they will exceed this status!
