Whether you are stationed at Norfolk Naval Base (NOB), Portsmouth Naval Hospital, NAS Oceana, or Portsmouth Shipyards, there are a lot of fun areas to visit while living in Hampton Roads. If you are PCSing to Hampton Roads soon, you might want to check out these different areas when house hunting. Lots of military families live near these great landmarks.

Searching for military homes for rent or sale? Consider Virginia Beach:

#10 Mt. Trashmore

Virginia Beach, VA

Mt Trashmore gets its unique name because it once was a big landfill in Virginia Beach. Yucky sounding, I know, but really it's a cute park with lots to do. (And no, it doesn't smell). The large hill is used for exercise, checking out the great views of the city, or a perfect place for a picnic and flying a kite. There is also a large playground for kids and a skate park for the teenagers. There is a paved path around the hill circling a large pond making it a great place to go for an afternoon jog with the stroller.

Nearby Neighborhoods: Windsor Woods, Towne Square

#11 Landstown Commons Shopping Center

Virginia Beach, VA

This shopping center is located in South Virginia Beach near the Amphitheater and the Courthouse area. Since building this shopping center, this area has built up a lot in the past 3 years. For convenience there is a new Princess Anne Hospital and ER just across the street. If there is a chance your spouse could change bases within Hampton Roads then this is a great area to live.  You will be centrally located to everything within a 20 minute radius.

The shopping center includes Best Buy, Bed Bath Beyond, Carters, Kohls, Office Max and lots more. (Just 3 miles down the street you have Target and Home Depot.) My favorite restaurants are Buffalo Wild Wings and Firehouse sub.

Nearby Neighborhoods: Courthouse Estates, Glenwood, Heritage Park, Hillcrest Farms, Indian River Farms, Salem Woods, Christopher Farms, Landstown Meadows, Rollingwood, and Princess Anne Crossing.

#12 Town Center

Virginia Beach, VA

Town Center has it all from big chain restaurants to little boutique shops. This was built about 5 years ago with the intent to clean up a the Pembroke Mall area. Since this revitalization, they are remodeling the mall and just added a Target.  I really like this shopping center because it's centrally located and architecturally pleasing. It's not a big area but it's packed with lots of great shops and restaurants.

My favorite restaurants are Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, PF Changs, Red Star Tavern, McCormick and Schmicks, Ruths Chris Steakhouse and many more. Shopping includes Ann Taylor Loft and other fine clothing boutiques.

Nearby neighborhoods: Thalia, Little Neck Area (including Kings Grant, Middle Plantation and many more off Little Neck Road).

NOTE: No matter where you chose to live in Hampton Roads, make sure you think about how the tunnel systems will affect your commute.
