"Real Hawaii"
If you are looking to experience a real taste of living in Hawaii, Kailua is the town for you! It is just a short drive to Marine Corp Base Hawaii in Kaneohe. It is also an easy commute to Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam and Schofield Barracks. The white power sand and blue pristine water of Kailua Beach is the perfect place for families to relax and enjoy the reason Hawaii is a paradise. While it has a small beach town feel, it offers convenience of restaurants, shops and so much more. The schools, in particular Lanikai Elementary and Aikahi are rated some of the top in the state. If you prefer private, though, LeJardin, Trinity and St. Anthony's are great alternatives all in the area.

"Kailua's Beauty Review"
Absolutely LOVED living in Kailua. We about 1 mile from the beach but it was all walk-able! We definitely drove with the kids but parking wasn't impossible either because most people walked to and from. Location is EXTREMELY pet friendly and you will almost find an owner and their fur-baby in every store you go to. We did end up moving on base eventually due to having more kids and our 2 bedroom 960sq ft condo just wasn't covering it! However, it was never the same as living out in town. We didn't exactly connect with other military families off of base but we still enjoyed it as we're very introvert compared to most. Once living on base we definitely connected more to other military families.

"Quaint Little Beach Town"
Kailua is on the windward side of Oahu. It's at the end of the H-3 and a very easy 20 minute commute to Pearl Harbor and a couple miles from the MCBH. Beachy neighborhoods where the houses are close together allow for great opportunity to meet your neighbors. Most neighborhoods have regular get-togethers and some have block parties. The homes are older, but many have been upgraded or expanded. The rents tend to be a bit highter here as it is along Kailua/Lanikai beach. Traffic during the summer can get a little hectic, but does not interfere too much with commute times like in Ewa or Aiea.
Beaches are beautiful and most houses closer to the beach have public right of way access. Beaches are pet friendly. One of the parks in Kailua is at the Kawainui Marsh. There's a wall that goes from one side of Kailua to the other and is about 1.3 mi long. It's a great place to bike, run or walk and is also pet friendly.
Kailua Town offers great shopping and has multiple grocery stores (in addition to the MCBH commissary). Whole Foods is opening April 18, 2012. Overall, this is a great town to live in.
