"Naval Station Newport - War College"

Family Friendly Neighborhood. We lived in Lower Greene Lane housing while my husband attended War College. It was small, but being able to keep some of our BAH and not having to pay for utilities made it worth it for us. We had lots of kids on our street and lots of playgrounds nearby. We also loved having the pool right up the hill. The management company host various social events throughout the year--Easter egg hunt, movie and game nights, 4H club. We had a garage which we didn't use for parking, but it was great to have for storage. Our kids went to Forest Ave. for K and 2nd grade, and had a great year. We were very happy with the school and teachers. If we would've been here longer, we probably would've looked out in town, but for a year or so, it's definitely doable.

Pros Cons
  1. Playgrounds and pool
  2. close to base
  3. maintenance issues resolved quickly
  1. small units

"Lower Greene Lane, Middletown, RI"

We enjoy all the outdoor areas to explore. Lots of children in the neighborhood for my children to play with. The older houses are small (4 bedroom duplex is about 1600sqft) and not always well maintained. Nice view of the water within walking distance.

Pros Cons
  1. Several playgrounds
  2. Pool
  3. Clubhouse with some exercise equipment
  1. No dog parks
  2. Duplexes (As almost all military housing here is)
  3. Older housing

  • Recommendations: Seems most of the island is safe. There are only a few pockets of questionable areas.
