Quiet houses, tree lined streets, large lots and yards. Portsmouth hidden gem. Close to shopping and short commute to Norfolk, VB, Chesapeake, Suffolk and Newport News. Great private schools, Portsmouth Catholic Regional and Portsmouth Christian close by.

"Diverse, Urban Neighborhood in Historic District"

We heard terrible things about Portsmouth before we moved here and, really, even as we get to know the area, we continue to hear that it is the armpit of Hampton Roads however we have been more than satisfied with our neighborhood. It is certainly not your typical, cookie-cutter suburb. The area is extremely diverse economically and racially. Many houses and in the process of restoration while others are clearly not.
There are a lot of other children in the neighborhood and although I definitely would not let my children play outside unsupervised, we have been welcomed by ALL of our neighbors. We are walking distance from the ferry to Norfolk, the Children's Museum, Naval Shipyard Museum, etc in downtown Portsmouth.
That said, the elementary school is not good. We elected to send our 2nd-grader to Portsmouth Regional Catholic School, preferring to pay tuition for a good school than have my husband spend the extra time commuting to work.

  • Recommendations: If we had known that the tunnels were not going to have tolls effective July 1st, as anticipated, we would have moved to Larchmont or Ghent in Norfolk however I'm very happy with our neighborhood.
