Spectrum Center Blvd, Kearny Mesa: Off Base Neighborhood/Subdivision

"Loved Kearny Mesa"

I lived at Avion @ Spectrum for 3 years and loved the area. The APT complex was newer, clean, and not meat-market-y. 10 min drive up Kearny Villa Road to Miramar, with 1 stoplight and no rush hour to contend with. Relatively low traffic for a San Diego neighborhood. Dog park in the neighborhood and very dog friendly for walking (I have a 65 lb dog.) Town homes and condos across the street were beautiful and great for a young family. YMCA is in the block. Walking/ bike riding distance to great small restaurants. Very close to Mission Trails park (bike or drive) for jogs/ hiking. Very close (2 min) to 163/ 15/ 52 freeways, which take you all over SD. Closest mall is Fashion Valley, 10 minutes away. 20-25 min to beach. You are in the landing pattern for Miramar, so jet noise is a given until 11pm. Younger neighborhood, fewer kids- no big parks for kids to play on, unless that's changed. Not sure about school system. SD is also my hometown and Clairemont wasn't known for great schools.

Pros Cons
  1. Newer construction
  2. Apartments' staff is very helpful/ responsive
  3. gym/ hot tub/ pool is wonderful and quiet
  4. large dog friendly
  1. jet noise
  2. parking can be tight
  3. My car was broken into- lock your car doors
  4. not the best kid-neighboorhood (no parks)

  • Recommendations: I'm from San Diego, and very familiar with the area. We were stationed there for 4 years as adults. If you like the beach, La Jolla or Coronado are your best, safest bets. They are also the most expensive. I loved Banker's Hill and parts of Hillcrest, if you like the downtown, young, married with no kids yet- crowd. Little Italy is similar. If you have children and want them in public school, Scripps Ranch, Poway, Carmel Mountain Ranch, and Rancho Bernardo are better. They each have a more suburban, single family home feel with good schools, nice, generally well maintained homes, and a more family oriented community feel. They are also more expensive. The University Town Center (UTC) area is also nice, and is 1/2 way between La Jolla and Miramar. Downtown (the Gaslamp Quarter) is only good if you are single or married with no kids- it is VERY urban and I wouldn't let my children go out unaccompanied.
  • Appearance: gated,neighborhood parks,well manicured with grass cut,neighborhood pool,looks uniform,curbs,common areas maintained,suburban,parking issues
